Fool's Paradise Reviews
Seemingly an homage to "Being There", it falls short on wit and is heavily reliant on cliché. Unlike its inspiration it stretches beyond credulity. The late diversion into politics leans heavily into its influence but is completely out of sync with the rest of the film. Unfortunately, a great cast can't save it.
This movie had me going 😂
I really liked this movie and would definitely recommend it.
Effing great and insanely entertaining start to finish
I loved this. As long as you look at it from a Charlie Chaplain perspective, it was very enjoyable to watch. The main character comes across as an idiot, but that's part of the charm as everybody around him is more idiotic than he is and he doesn't say a word. I love how his expressions bring out confessions and truth from everybody he interacts with. Innocent and enjoyable.
I would not call this a comedy, but it was so cute! Honestly my friends and I loved it. Honestly give it a shot.
As a fellow screen writer, it’s again another reminder that terrible writing can still be green lit. I’m not sure if that gives me hope or makes me feel more disenfranchised with this industry. Either way, this film was a meandering mess.
A commentary on “the biz” that is difficult to put your finger on, Fool’s Paradise had moments that tricked you into thinking this was going to take off, but then sputtered back to the same shtick. The industry loves you, then they hate you, then they love you again. Fans, agents, directors, producers spouses, friends, come and go, but publicists… publicists are forever. “Latte Pronto” (not his Christian name) (Charlie Day) is a deaf-mute who possesses a striking resemblance to an obnoxious method actor (also, Charlie Day) who accidentally kills himself on-set going full method. Although Pronto cannot act and doesn’t fully grasp the world around him, his own avant-garde method of looking directly into the camera turns him into a Hollywood darling that inevitably sends him straight into a superhero movie directed by a rich douchebag (Jason Sudeikis) and filmed entirely in front of a green screen. I suppose the commentary is that Pronto is as close to a blank slate as you can get in the industry and everyone around him projects their own baggage onto this canvas. There’s a moment when Pronto begins dancing and it’s reasonable to expect that the film is going to turn into a Hollywood Mr. Bean, which wouldn’t’ve been a bad direction, but instead reverts back to Pronto looking confused, scared, demoralized. There are plenty of good cameos (especially if you’re an Always Sunny fan) and enough laugh-out-loud moments to merit a watch, but I’m hoping Charlie Day has something better for next time, both in directing and acting. I’ll always enjoy a story that skewers these people (at a minimum, to help balance out the other side of the scale wherein they inhale their own farts), but the RT is an abysmal (18/38), so I’m likely as positive as it’s gonna get.
Cute, fun & different
Fool's paradise wasn't what I expected at all when looking at previews or the cover image. I was pleasantly surprised by the all star cast, and sheer ridiculousness of the plot. Charlie Day's performance is outstanding and whimsical as he gets thrown about the fringes of Hollywood. It reminded me of late night interviews, red carpet photoshoots, and all of the idealization that takes place despite taking into account the human nature of each actor and actress. Don't get me wrong, this wasn't my favorite movie, but I chuckled at a few parts of it and was glad to have watched it in the end. I'd recommend it if you're working on something else or in for a fun, easy movie to watch.
A heartfelt study of the duality of man and... meh.. a borderline Muppet movie minus the muppets.
I love this movie! Who knew Charlie Day would be such an inventive and proficient director?! I always think Charlie is great, but he does such an excellent job with the imagery and sound in telling this story. A+ for me.
This was a surprisingly terrible movie. So many good actors came together to put this disaster together. It was beyond bad and this movie had so many people walk out of the theater. I've never seen anything like this before. I stayed until see the end and it was awful like the beginning & middle. Waste of your time, money, and you leave kind of pissed tbh.
I'm only writing a review because I don't think the write-up reflects a fair portrayal. A part of me wants to like this movie because of Charlie Day, sure. Another part of me thinks it's fine and deserves more credit once all said and done. I've definitely seen worse comedy films get a better review. It's a 3 star film. It falls down in a few places for sure but it's fine, and deserves some extra credit for trying to do something different in an industry that is producing endless amounts of sequels and remakes. Charlie Day has tried to tackle the Goliath that is Hollywood with a mute character with his hands tied behind his back and blind-folded and yeh, I guess it got beat. It's brave to go down this route of a mute lead character with nothing to offer, while I get that was the point, I also think we could've seen a little more soul from the character/ something just for the audience so we root for him and hope he's protected and safe in Hollywood. But 1 Star? Terrible/Awful? I don't think so.m
I’m a huge always sunny fan and love other Charlie Day projects, but wow this might be one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I get the bit—he doesn’t talk and it’s comedic for all these great things to happen to him while not talking, but none of the events remotely come together in a cohesive way. It’s just a random hodge podge of scenes with no clear storyline. This movie was so bad, I had to make rotten tomato’s account to let everyone who references this website how horrifically catastrophic this movie is. With a star studded cast and obviously a big budget, I expected better. I had to turn this off with 22 minutes left because my brain physically could not take it, and there should be a class action lawsuit brought against the studio who made this movie to compensate anyone that spent money to go see this movie. Go back to Paddy’s Pub, “Latte” “Pronto”.
Charlie Day knocks it out of the park! His performance was great. Filled with great actors this movie had me in tears from laughing so much.
This movie sucked 1h 37 minutes of my life away. Just terrible
I created an account for this movie. Too many people are focusing on the commentary this movie has on Hollywood instead of appreciating everything else it is doing. The simple comedy of knowing how bizarre the main character's situation must often seem to him keeps this movie going. If you watch this movie through his eyes it is just excellent and many scenes had my wife and I dying. In addition to being funny, it is an absolutely wild swing to create a movie where the main character doesn't speak but still manages to stay engaging while he progresses through the world. But it makes it work. One thing I was trying to figure out halfway through the movie was how to properly conclude a movie like this? The main character is just swept along, so how do you end it in a satisfying way? Yet, Charlie Day as a director manages a wonderfully sweet ending while doing something new and killing it as a silent actor. I am really disappointed this movie had such a poor reception and seems to be judged on its few weaknesses instead of everything else it is doing. Fantastic ride, unexpected emotional heart, a stellar cast and hilariously funny.
I think half of my braincells died 30 minutes in. The positive reviews only like the movie for its casting and nothing else. It's clear Charlie Day should not be allowed to direct ever again.
Beautiful, compelling concept. But I never cared what was happening. The central character had no depth and was surrounded by episodes of other characters with no depth. A parade of Hollywood stereotypes around a void of a central character.
