The Fox and the Hound Reviews

Jan 21, 2025

Underrated Disney gem about two best friends from worlds apart that starts off adorable, but ends in tragedy with a touch of hope in the end.

True classic! I watched it over and over as a kid. Love the animation, and the story itself is beautiful. I like the ending message-- it not being a perfectly happy ending.

I love "The Fox and the Hound". It is sweet, heartfelt and at times it can even be frightening. The ending of this movie is one of the most powerful moments in all of animation. This movie has made me laugh, gasp and cry. I love the animation; I love the music and I love the story of friendship. So, what holds this one back from being a (10/10) animated film? Simply put when this film is about the fox and or the hound, it is great stuff. Whenever it wanders to other stories, it is an immediate step down in quality. When the movie cuts to Dinky and Boomer chasing after Squeaks the caterpillar, I feel my time is being wasted. Even when I was a kid watching this movie, I hated these discount Tom & Jerry segments. In other negatives, there are some character moments that should have been dialed up a bit more to hit their emotional potential. There could have been more scenes between the title characters to really establish their friendship. And I acknowledge the plot hole of...just how long does one hunting trip last? Disney animation was going through a bit of turmoil inside at this point in history. Don Bluth and 17 animators had recently left the company to make their own quality animated films. This left this film in an awkward limbo, with a few too many cooks in the kitchen. Some scrapped ideas included a singing flamingo. There is a 10/10 movie in here, it just doesn't fully develop. Take out the scenes with the woodpecker and caterpillar, kill off a character and add a little more of the Fox and Hound, then we would have tight 70-minute animated gold. As is, it is still a great animated movie. In general, I think it is overlooked, as far as being one of Disney's best. It's one of my favorite animated films, and it will be forever won't it? Yeah...forever.

Felt like it overused cheap emotional heart-breaking tropes that Disney likes to use... Otherwise it's good, semi-classic Disney movie.

One of my favorite movies of all time Period

60% rating ... Predictable plot, but still a relatively enjoyable film to watch, especially if you're a Disney fan.

This is the movie of all time. The only movie that actually was able to make me cry.

The story of a fox kit and bloodhound puppy that become friends. This film has some really solid moments, but most of them happen in the second or third acts. Now, I understand that without the first act these moments wouldn’t have the emotional weight they do, but I didn’t enjoy the first act. I think this stems from my dislike of child characters that Disney portrays in the 70’s and 80’s, they are too cute and more of a caricature of children instead of what they really are like. “Best of Friends” is a great song, the “drop off” scene is a tear jerker, and the ending is really powerful and satisfying. I’d recommend viewing it at least once.

Despite the fact that this film is too dark and violent, it is still a mini masterpiece for me personally, which I enjoy watching again and again

A beautiful film about animal friendship, environmental peace, and human cruelty. Directors Ted Berman, Art Stevens, and Richard Rich's animated buddy drama The Fox and the Hound (1981) holds up as a moving picture that I still adore. It's better than I remembered as a child. It's very cute, but also so touching how it instills a moral sensibility to not hunt animals down as they have their own lives, they are just trying to survive like any person. The Fox and the Hound feels like a thematic sequel to Bambi, from the villainous hunters, sympathy for poor animals living in the forest, to the gorgeous watercolor background paintings. The hand drawn animation is stunning and so warm. I love the gentle vibe with a quiet Fall and Spring atmosphere from the melting snow to the changing of the color of leaves. I wish Disney would return to hand drawn animation some day. Writers Larry Clemmons, Vance Gerry, Burny Mattinson, David Michener, Steve Hulett, Peter Young, Ted Berman, and Earl Kress give us original author Daniel P. Mannix's story of a friendship between otherwise natural predator and prey in a hound and a fox, who become friends, until the hound is trained by a man to become a hunting dog. Seeing the hound find his place in the world and forget his friend is sad, but we see that humanity are the violent ones breeding animals to be killers. The fox finding his lover and a new home in the forest is sweet. I kept thinking about Bambi and Watership Down as there is genuine empathy for the suffering and joys of animals, while employing a sincere acceptance of death, age, time, friendship, kindness, and consideration for others in its themes. Mickey Rooney is surprisingly nice and playful as the forlorn fox hero Tod. Keith Mitchell sounds cute and playful as the young fox Tod. Kurt Russell is determined, fierce, and apologetic as the adult hound Copper. Corey Feldman sounds so tiny as young Copper. Pearl Bailey is welcoming, nurturing, and boisterous as the friendly owl Big Mama. Her singing is lovely and fits the scenic paradise of this pastoral piece. Jack Albertson is vicious, rude, and vindictive as the cruel redneck hunter Amos Slade. He's monstrous and irredeemable really from putting down bear traps to kill the fox or murdering dozens of animals for their fuzzy pelts. Sandy Duncan has a bright and sultry voice as the girl fox Vixey, who finds love and companionship in Tod. Jeanette Nolan is funny and sad as Widow Tweed. Pat Buttram's grumpy Southern dog voice for Chief is perfect. He's funny and fearsome as needed. Piglet's voice actor John Fiedler is super sweet and adorable as The Porcupine, who kindly invites the fox Tod into his home in the forest. John McIntire is mean and grumpy as The Badger. Dick Bakalyan's mobster voice for the little bird Dinky is hilarious. I adored Tigger voice actor Paul Winchell's silly vocal antics as the aloof woodpecker Boomer. Editors James Melton and James Koford do swift hard cuts and smooth dissolves for a tranquil pace and tone. The Fox and the Hound is one of Disney's most relaxed feeling films. Don Griffith's art direction is stunning from flowing rivers and waterfalls to the leaves on trees blowing in the wind or bushes rustling with a small animal inside. Composer Buddy Baker's orchestral music is striking for its understated soft classical selections that range from thrilling hunts, romantic melodies, to serene strings. In short, The Fox and the Hound is a lovely and quick 82 minutes full of gorgeous hand drawn animation, inviting characters, fun times, harrowing chases, emotional shifts, and sincere messages.

I used to watch this movie on repeat as a kid. And that scene when Todd is left in the woods breaks me down to tears every time, no matter how I old I get.

My favorite Disney movie of all time. Super fun and enjoyable, and very wholesome. It manages to even out the wholesome and fun moments, and the sad and depressing moments perfectly. It's an amazing film.

This movie is very touching and is reflects on many things that happen every day in someone's life. What moves me alot is: Despite the fact of how much injustice Tod had to face, as an adult is indescribable. Tod having to be hated by the hunter Amos, lose contact with his best friend Cooper since childhood, and later to be rejected of continued friendship with him when they turn adults. Tod gets chased by copper and chief and then later accused of be responsible of Chief's injury, thus copper swears revenge against Tod (which isn't even revenge). Later the next morning to lose his human mother Widow Tweed and dropped out in the forest "all alone without a friend in the world". But even after he was dropped off in the forest he was still being chased by Amos and Copper to try to kill him and his mate Vixey. But despite the awful injustice that Tod had to experience as a fox, he still chose to love. Even though Copper was enraged to murder him, even though Tod has been wronged so much throughout his life from them, In ways that hurt him physically and hurt him on an emotionally personal level. And with all that, Tod still chose to love his enemies. He did not desire justice or revenge on his enemies, but he chose to love them regardless of the pain they inflicted on him. He chose to save Copper from the bear and save Amos from being eaten alive after Copper would be killed. He loved them and didn't desire harm to them, but saved them because of his loving heart. Copper, after seeing Tod exhausted and wounded from the attack, he finally realizes how much Tod really loves him and his master. And that Amos was also heart touched, so that he didn't decide to kill Tod but showed mercy because to him has been shown mercy. This story is very deep on so many levels, it's hard to fathom the many things that has happened in this story. It amazes me more and more every time I watch it. What a beautiful story!

After 40 years this is one of the most resonant films from Walt Disney Truth be told I had no idea it was based on the 1967 book I remember having the vhs growing up A mother fox dies trying to rescue her child, the fox grows up named Tod by a farmer lady named Widow Tweed Her next door neighbor Amos is a hunter with two hunting dogs, Chief and Copper Tod ends up being friends with Copper but nature says they can’t get along since he’s a hunting dog and Tod was supposed to be raised in the wild After several stints Tod and Copper realize he isn’t safe anymore with Amos planning to hunt him down A short movie but instantly hit a chord with me having memorable characters, cute songs, and some solid animation The read along was amazing too It manages to transcend its thin predictable plot A cute and heartbreaking story of a fox and hound becoming friends but nature is the real enemy given they grow up to be mortal enemies Shame that a fox from the wild can't be part of everyday life with people and with hunting dogs But it did give fans and critics a dose of reality Almost forgot Kurt Russell voices the adult Copper and the late Mickey Rooney as Tod, they both sell their friendship even when it eventually starts to fade Most of all I love the climax with the bear and how it pays off with the sincere investment and ultimately it's the friendship between the fox and hound that holds it together Great themes of seeing past prejudice and hatred A somber and more honest view of social norms as well as pressure influences our behavior as we grow up The last movie of the golden era of the 70s entering into the gritty era of the 80s One of my all-time childhood favorites that'll linger for decades

Even though it isn't my favorite Disney movie it's my older brother's favorite Disney movie. The story of prejudice told through a fox and a dog done quite somberly with beautiful animation

The Fox and the Hound is one of those movies that I really love as a kid and a teenager I still loved it and Nathan had seen it as well. The scenes in it are funny with Dinky and Boomer and I when I was a kid Boomer sounds like Tigger and he even laughs like him. The chase scenes are a lot of fun and the bear scene, that whole scene is awesome. I used to watch it over and over when I was younger. It's creative and it's just got the climax. And much like The Jungle Book the opening credits, the opening credits is scary with no music. All they have here is forest noises that is until the female fox appears. This scares me when I was a kid. The scenes sometimes gets scary and sometimes gets quiet. The movie is really good much like Sleeping Beauty.
