Frailty Reviews

Apr 24, 2025

The first time I saw this movie I was hooked on the storyline. It weaves an intricate tale not only of a family devastated by the loss of their wife and mother but also the fallout of a father who is suddenly commissioned by the Almighty to dispense Divine Justice. As you slowly watch the father descend into a complete mental breakdown you cannot help feeling for the two bewildered sons. The acting is superb and I thought Matthew McConaughey was outstanding in this movie. I thoroughly enjoyed the twist at the end and I felt overall that this movie was an extremely dark tale told in a very intricate manner.

Great movie with a horrible twist. But horrible in a horror sense. A must see!

An unsettling film that uses a tight knit family as a backdrop for a thriller that keeps you guessing in all the right ways. The film, for the most part, holds on to the premise quite well and keeps things moving at the right pace. There are moments you may wish there was a bit more stylistic flair added to Paxton's arsenal, but overall it still works. And some may see the "twist" coming, but it doesn't take away from the overall impact of this tale about faith and righteousness.

Great movie. It's so hard to find a psychological thriller than isn't full of gratuitous violence. Shock seems to be the main purpose rather than entertainment recently. Definitely recommend.

had to see this gem twice to really appreciate all of it. When a widowed father of two interrupts his two sons' sleep with a shocking revelation, they are torn between believing him and not. As the horrifying events of this tale unfold, we learn a lot about the father, about his two sons, and about their destinies. With shocking twist after shocking twist, this film never allows for a lull in the plot. Bill Paxton plays the father, but the most notable performances are that of his older son, Fenton, played by Matthew O'Leary and his younger son, Adam, played by Jeremy Sumpter. This is one of the best thrillers that I have seen in a while, and you will want to watch this a few times to appreciate every intricate aspect of the plot.

Frailty is a religio-psycho horror that tones down the visual violence while you follow “Dad” Meiks (Bill Paxton) and his two sons, Adam (Jeremy Sumpter) and Fenton (Matt O’Leary) while they kill demons in their makeshift slaughter-shed in the backyard. Meiks is a widower who suddenly is given the revelation from God that demons walk amongst them and he has been tasked with capturing and killing then. Adam, the younger of the two brothers, believes. Fenton believes his father has gone crazy and is just murdering innocent people. The story is being told by an adult Fenton (Matthew McConaughey) to FBI agent Wesley Doyle (powers Boothe), as the to assist with the “God’s Hand” murders that are still plaguing Texas into the present day. You may ask yourself, “okay, so just lead him to your brother, already?” but take heart, twists abound — and they aren’t cheap, but actually pretty good, if a little dramatic. Frailty is Paxton’s directorial debut and is a commendable piece of unique horror. The acting, especially from the young O’Leary, makes this more than just a twisty, typical, 2000s Horror. Demon hunting with an axe is always cool, *Here Be Spoilers*, when they’re actual demons, it’s that much tastier.

It's a been a couple years since I've watched this. I remember really liking the concept, thought the idea was great. I dont remember it being a good movie though. I member thinking, "yup, that is a thing that is watch. It is one of the movies of all time. The idea is more rememberable than the movie itself.

What on earth are these high ratings for from both audience and critics this is the stupidest most moronic film “no son I’m not a killer these are demons the angel told me” over and over omg what a load of CRAP

The strength of Frailty lies in its atmosphere. Paxton’s direction effectively builds tension throughout the film, maintaining a slow-burn creepiness as viewers are drawn into a story that blurs the line between faith and madness. The performances, especially from Matthew McConaughey and Paxton, help anchor the film, with McConaughey's eerie calm adding an extra layer of unease. Paxton's portrayal of a devout father convinced he’s on a divine mission is disturbing, particularly because of his conviction and the impact it has on his sons. While the film has a strong premise and some twists that work well, Frailty can feel a bit uneven at times. The pacing, especially in the middle, drags in parts, and the film doesn’t always capitalize on the potential psychological complexity of its characters. The themes of fanaticism, morality, and family dysfunction are intriguing, but they could have been explored with more depth. The movie’s twist ending is effective, though it may not be entirely unpredictable for seasoned thriller fans. However, it does leave viewers questioning the nature of good and evil, which is a testament to the film's thought-provoking narrative. ChatGPT c

Good ending and good acting. There is a lot of mystery and murder surrounding the film, but it feels a little too reserved.

Well-made story telling. Bet you'll not expect the plot twist at the end.

Amazing I can't believe in 2024 I am just now seeing this. Wonderful. Telling everyone I know who hasn't seen it to watch

Critically underrated movie. Bill Paxton leads a great cast. Sunspensful movie that kept me on the edge of my seat until the end. And that final twist is supurb. Worth a second watch or worth picking up if you haven't watched it in a while.

I remember being totally blown away by the ending, a twist if there ever was one. But when you watch it again and pay closer attention, you will see. Bill Paxton, so great.

A mysterious man (McConaughey) goes to the FBI to tell them a serial killer is his younger brother. But he refuses to reveal his location until he recounts their childhood with their religiously abuses father. Paxton does a decent job directing but I found it difficult to believe him in portraying the dad whom God give directions. One is sympathetic to the plight of the boys and their relationship to each other an their father. The ending is predictable but I did enjoy contemplating the morality of most of the characters.

It was fine but then the ending? My God what an atrocity of an ending. I feel like slapping the writers.

What's a purpose of that?
