Free Solo Reviews
Beautiful, scary, emotional, inspirational.
Excellent doco about Alex, a fascinating character obsessed with free solo climbing and achieving excellence. His father was also an obsessive character and taught Alex climbing.
An incredible and awe-inspiring film about an incredible and awe-inspiring feat. Wow!
I just watched this for the third time. I can't get enough of this guy
On second viewing you realize it's not as perfect as it seemed - there's an amazing girlfriend that never quit amount to more than that, and a weird shift in tone at the end - but nitpicking aside I don't think I will ever forget this film.
The climb was condensed into 12 minutes and during that 12 minutes barely any of the shots showed what he's actually doing. Most of it was stupid shots of the cameramen on the ground filming themselves filming him (oh my god SO many of those) and things like ultra close ups, ultra wide shots, shots angled to show the rocks where it's impossible to see what he's actually doing, etc. And all the shots where you CAN actually see what he's doing were VERY quick and then cut away to some dumb useless artsy angle again. They had drones to get close but used them terribly. Basically this hypes up a climb for an hour then barely shows the climb. No offense to the guy climbing who did a great job, but this documentary failed to actually show it. Though I'm sure this is great for people who want to watch nothing for 90 minutes.
One of my favourite documentaries of all time. I've seen it 3 times and it still has me on the edge of my seat everytime. Incredible.
Although I’m rating this a five stars because this is the best documentary I’ve ever seen and not the best movie period, it’s filled with suspense, perfect commentary, and the amazing talent that Alex holds which can definitely keep you on your toes the whole movie.
77%. Alex is a pretty strange dude. So is his gf. The history of Alex and then bringing in his gf isn't very exciting. The planning of the climb is pretty cool. Overall the first 3/4 of the film is pretty slow and then the actual ascent is riveting. 2/5 rewatch. Would really just skip to the end.
Phenomenal movie - amazing scenery
Free Solo is a truly nerve-wracking documentary that follows world-renowned rock climber Alex Honnold as he attempts to conquer the seemingly impossible: scaling the 3,200-foot vertical face of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park without any ropes or safety gear. The film not only captures what can be considered the greatest physical feat of our time, but also the psychology of risk-taking and the sheer determination required to stay alive during a free solo of this magnitude. With breathtaking cinematography and a gripping narrative, "Free Solo" left my palms sweaty in the best way possible. Excited to continue following Honnold's ground breaking journies beyond this documentary.
You can't get past the fact that this is a brilliant documentary. At the same time, I don't particularly appreciate seeing a narcissist like Alex Honnold glorified. It is both an incredible feat of athleticism and selfishness all at once. Alex cares little about those around him and the effect his death might have upon those who love him. The film is a fascinating simply because of the number of people drawn to such a selfish man and yet overlook every second of his self-centered behavior. Clearly for people like Alex only by putting their life at risk do they feel a sense of accomplishment. It should be noted that Alex had scaled El Capitan many times with a rope for safety reasons. It's the same solo climb but with a rope just in case something happens.
This movie in incredibly inspirational and I strongly recommend it!
By far on of my favorite documentary I have vied I loved all the different camera angles used the how we were able to get a different perspective and a deeper idea of each person in the documentary
it was a good movie for the most part however I did not find free solo to be a lovable movie and i think it was pretty generic
The filmmakers used a variety of filming techniques like close-ups wide to show. Alex is climbing. the style of filming was pretty scary when they would show the whole landscape of how high he was in the air. I feel like the sound played a big role in the movie grabbing the viewers attention with suspense along the way.
This movie was about a free soloer that climbs a mountain that no one has ever done before. The sound in the end of the if him in the last seconds climbing the mountain make it climatic. The drone shots were insane and the angles made it show how high up he was on the mountain. None of this was distracting in my opinion because it made the movie better and it made it more interesting to watch
In Free Solo, I feel like the style of filming and the various overlays added to the movie, as they help show how far Alex is getting in the climb. For example, when Alex is climbing El Cap, they used text overlays to show us the various pitches that Alex is reaching, to show how far he is getting in the climb. I also feel like sound contributed to the film, as they used tense music for when he was at the boulder problem, and uplifting music when he finishes the climb
I think the use of close up views of Alex on the mountain added to the film because it shows how strong his grip is. The far shots showed how massive the mountain is compared to a human. The music adds to the suspense.
I thought the movie free solo was great however there where many things that contributed to the films success. The use of music to empathize emotional moments which where attempted through out the film regardless of the main character seem to show very little. The editing style was artfully crafted and the only thing that real bugged me was the clearly obvious and obnoxious way the film crew always tried to act and exaggerate situations.Other than that though it was a great film and the style of filming and use of wide shots only improved the movie.
