I have one word that describes Fresh Kills, Outstanding! Excellant star power with Jennifer Esposito starring and directing this movie. The cast is awesome. I loved the character of Rose, silent yet strong. From her youth to adulthood she wanted to break the circle and she did! Now we need a sequel! Please see this movie, you will not regret it!

Awesome movie on many levels. Love the last scene: after he executes the plan to the very end to save his sister and himself, he breaks down in front of his father, who can't hide his shame for falling short of what his son needed. One of many excellent scenes in a well thought out, symbolic, and powerful movie.

Meh.. I wasn't all that impressed; the trick the kid pulled on everybody was cool but the acting was plain and the whole thing felt too much to a degree of unrealistic.

I've been watching this movie for 25 years, and it never gets old. The performance from Sean Nelson (Fresh) is Oscar worthy to this day. The story is just gritty enough to keep you watching. The chess metaphor is brilliant. The writing good enough and raw enough to make it authentic. Even instances of bad child acting add some charm.

I'm unsure how this movie is generally well received. Scene to scene it's poorly acted.

Michael is 12 years old, growing up in a poor housing project, selling drugs on the streets of New York before and after school. He periodically plays chess with his father, who is a chess master and an alcoholic living in a trailer. Through chess and conversations about chess, Michael realizes that many chess concepts are applicable in everyday life. He understands the importance of strategy and begins to lead his own personal micro-politics …

Worst Movie, I have watched, ever.

One of my favorite films. Well written and directed beautifully. The story is realistic and the protagonist is very sympathetic. You really are worried about how things will turn out for him, and although the ending doesn't resolve everything it's interesting to see how he overcomes some of his circumstances with wit and perseverance. That being said this movie not Inspiring or for the faint of heart. It's dark and shows how potential is swallowed by inner city life and this can leave vibrant kids with a lot of potential giving everything they have just to make it through the day.

Probably one of the smartest kids in the game.

Pros -Great performances by everyone, especially Sean Nelson. -Compelling and intense. Cons -The dog scenes and Chucky scenes slow the movie down.

I often think kids can't act out of a box, and this movie is no exception, but the story is very complex and does not lose itself thanks to impressive direction.

Couldnt really see a little kid taking down all the seasoned gangsters... Not a believeable enough storyline. It has some decent scenes, but falls short of being worthy of owning the DVD. Not sure why Samuel L even took this role. 2/5

WOW! This film sucker-punched me. Very intelligent with some depth and a great ending wraps it all up really well. The teenage protagonist here does not survive the harsh inner city, but "conquers" it by being incredibly strategic and employing lessons that his distant father teaches him in chess. Probably not very realistic, but instead it adds a kind of mythic quality to the story. The young hero here goes through his journey and rights a number of wrongs getting some important lessons along the way. Even personally brought back some memories as I grew up in the area and recognized places from the 90s.
