The greatest and most unexpected pleasure of Fried Barry is the pure vein of sweetness that pulses beneath the surface.

If you like your films depraved, sick and greasy, you'll love 'Fried Barry!' And luckily, I like my films depraved, sick, and greasy.

This is one of the most unusual alien visitation films you'll ever watch. Especially if you don't give any thought to why the other-worldly presence was careless enough to pick Barry for its stopover on Earth.

What he has created is certainly a gnarly dive into a maelstrom of darkness, but one is left wondering whether it actually achieves anything.

You'll see a bit of everything in the ensuing hour and a half.

FRIED BARRY gets a yes vote from me. I think it's entertaining, slyly funny, and somewhat surreal. What the film achieves with a minimum of explication and the looks on human faces is really effective.

Fried Barry takes great pains to alienate its viewers as quickly as possible.

When the film enthusiastically embraces its cult-flick weirdness and grindhouse nastiness, it's at least repulsively watchable.

What in the holy hell is going on here?

On a visual level Fried Barry is hugely successful, with a rich and vivid palette working in tandem with the often dingy and dirty locales, which make for a fascinating visual juxtaposition.

a peculiar horror extravaganza, from South Africa

It has a really original premise, but I don't think much is done with it.
| Original Score: 5/10 | May 15, 2021
Loud and heavily stylised, this South African comedy thriller pounds to a metallic beat as it follows a loser on an insane odyssey.
| Original Score: 3/5 | May 13, 2021
If you're not into grindhouse cinema or hallucinogenic like movies, Fried Barry is going to be a hard one to dive into; however, Green's performance alone is worth it.

Kruger's debut feature is not for those looking for a calm and cohesive experience, but if a manic and disgusting joyride is more what you're after, Fried Barry is for you.

Largely indescribable, not for the faint of heart, and for fans only...but there are really interesting moments in it.

Cheap and not so cheerful, Fried Barry might be episodic in the extreme but it has spurts of brilliance, imagination and a real sense of risk taking. Dirty, lurid fun.
| Original Score: 3/5 | May 10, 2021
For all it's rough edges, it shows enough raw talent that it is unlikely to be [Writer and director Ryan Kruger's] last.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | May 7, 2021
Its aspirations of being a thoughtful acid trip become a lost cause.
| Original Score: 2/4 | May 7, 2021
Fried Barry is unabashedly its own thing: visually inventive, deliberately abrasive, and dreamlike in the most menacing way possible.
