Frontera Reviews

Do destino? Vale apena assistir? Sim vale apena assistir. Nota: 8,5

Michael Berry's debut film _Frontera_ may be lacking in nuance, but it's still a compelling portrayal of racism against Mexican immigrants. A good cast offsets the simplistic plot. Michael Pena is strong as Miguel, an honorable Mexican who wants a better life for his family, so he crosses the border illegally (although there's no explanation why he couldn't have applied for legal citizenship). Ed Harris is Roy, a laconic cowboy / ex-sheriff whose wife is killed when three white teenagers are shooting at Miguel and his companion as they make their way across the desert. Miguel is arrested because the authorities assume he killed the woman. Meanwhile, Miguel's pregnant wife Paulina (Eva Longoria) pays a trafficker to get her to her husband. She is abused and raped. No big spoiler: Roy, who has suffered a great loss, turns out to be the only good white guy. Yes, there is a lot of stereotyping in this movie. The county cops are stupid and racist; the border patrol cops are corrupt. The white teenagers are despicable punks. The traffickers are uniformly evil. Miguel and his family are a little too honorable to be realistic. But none of that bothered me much. The story is good, told in a straightforward fashion. The cinematography is impressive, with lots of beautiful southwestern vistas. The conclusion is unabashedly sentimental. I liked it anyway. I'm willing to excuse this film's shortcomings-----I guess because of good intentions on the part of the filmmaker.

I was very moved by the story and thought all of the acting was superb! Absolutely recommend.

This movie is well made. It's about the reality of the Mexican border and what really happens. I absolutely give this movie 5 stars. Anybody that would give it anything less is a moron.

Thoughtful movie about the plight of Mexicans on the border and the U.S. citizens who are trying to eliminate them. The story is complex with many facets to each of the the characters. When it' ends, there is a feeling that one would like to discuss the issues presented in movie.

Frontera builds a solid plot to a satisfactory ending but there's great potential and room for improvement. Especially with its impeccable cast.

Good movie with subtle drama that holds your heart no matter how you feel about the real issues presented. I'd let every Miguel and Paulina, and their hardworking, honest, loving family, immigrate to my town any day. Great, solid, talented cast. Well made.

Good star cast and acting but with a forgettable lackluster script.

The wife of a former sheriff is killed when someone shoots to scare some Mexican immigrants. She falls of her horse and bashes her head against a rock and dies. The Mexican immigrants are later arrested and one is charged with her murder. The woman's husband digs a little deeper and finds a cover up and a many wrongly accused. Very well made with great performances all around. Michael Pena is brilliant as the accused and a restrained performance from Harris rounds the film out nicely. Recommended.

This is a good movie, has a good cast, and a decent plot. I won't say the acting is good or bad, but I'll say that I didn't really like it. The script is ok, as well, with nothing that impressive. It has a lot of characters to follow, most of who are undeveloped. The cops are terribly bad at their jobs, they can't find any evidence of anything, bullets, cartridges, tracks, are anything to help find the killer, and don't seem to make the point that the Mexican didn't kill her for two reason; he didn't have a gun, and he stayed and helped her. It seemed like it was missing some important pieces, and that there was a overall lack of emotion from any of the characters, even when a wife dies, a kid is blamed for the murder, and the Mexicans wife is raped. Simply nobody seems to react. Anyway decent movie overall, has many small problems, but still enjoyable and different.

Touches on several sensitive issues. Not very exciting, but tells a story. And I've always loved Michael Pena.

An very average film about a man whose wife is killed tries to find out who did it and helps free the innocent guy charged of her murder. The film is in background of the cross border immigrants. A very average film.
