Fyre Fraud Reviews
Given what we're told of him, there's little reason to trust anything he says, and so his interviews instead make the viewer scrutinize him and suss out whether these are his true feelings or simply how a liar tells their story.

A little more comedic, a little more about millennials.

Fyre Fraud works better as a companion piece to Fyre than a full documentary in its own right.
| Original Score: 7/10 | Jul 3, 2019
Fyre Fraud goes further by tracing Fyre Festival's dirty-money trail, and perhaps more importantly, pulls back the curtain on the making of a millennial con artist.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Apr 11, 2019
Fyre Fraud convincingly identifies the fraud-fest as just one more chimera of modern times, a 24-hour game of "let's pretend," in which one cannot tell if someone is a delusional liar or the smartest person in the room.

It's interesting to hear the madness explained, but Hulu's documentary Fyre Fraud zooms out to contextualize Fyre Festival as a symptom of a much greater issue.

The Hulu doc works harder to paint a bigger picture -- such as how McFarland was able to access large amounts of money to fund his schemes. However, its patronizing depiction of millennials may well alienate many of them.

Overall, Fyre Fraud works better as a longform journalistic piece. It's sprawling and detailed at the same time.

Fyre Fraud hoists Billy McFarland up as a straw man indictment against millennials, casting aside a thorough examination of the festival in favor of cheap laughs.

Trying to use pop culture as shorthand can be helpful, but in this case, it turns the issues into actual cartoon characters.
| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Jan 20, 2019
Fyre Fraud, which had been planned as a series, feels unfocused and rushed.

Proper event planning can actually pull off a win. Now how many people did Hulu convince to watch?
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 18, 2019
If you love a story of absolute, no-holds-barred, extravagant disaster, you'll probably want to watch both. But if you just want a better idea of what the heck happened here, the truth is that either film will serve.

The Hulu documentary gets into some of the larger ramifications of Fyre Festival, but the glib tone undermines the seriousness of the situation.

McFarland, like most scammers, is a wellspring of genius misused for perilous ends...Fyre Fraud is a story of an all-time swindle...
| Original Score: 3/4 | Jan 18, 2019
Fyre Fraud is a little zippier and pop culture-y in its skewering...
| Original Score: 3/4 | Jan 17, 2019
This isn't just 90 minutes of uninterrupted schadenfreude, even though it could have been, pretty easily.
