Meet the man whose word wasn't non-violence, his entire religion was non-violence! As the British attempt to assert their authority in India, lawyer Mohandas Gandhi begins to peacefully protest against the encroaching colonists, with a stance on non-violence as iron-clad as his desire to give his people independence. A story of freedom, free-speech and the power of belief, we are introduced into the world of the influential leader who inspired a nation!

Do you know the biographical genre transcends across three tiers? Basic storytelling goes by factual numbers, but the historical accuracy that lies there is where it gets assessed the most if the film is being faithful to the facts and telling them right – unless remembered differently if dramatization argues. Then it takes incredible talent and attention to actually feel the person and be immersed by the depicted event(s). The latter could be the main creative buildup, but the former is spiritual replication that revives the person being portrayed over the performer's own presence and only felt the late person's aura. Once you get to know that person upon the performative resurrection, you start sharing that person's perspective and feel the ideal emotions you would expect after absorbing the renowned wisdom. That third tier got discovered upon meeting Mahatma Gandhi in his 1982 epic biopic. In case you haven't heard of him, Gandhi started out as a lawyer who begun facing the resulted disparities from the British Empire ruling over his country India. He stood against them and became the beloved leader revolting against the trigger-happy, violent British with nonviolent protests, a philosophical concept he dedicated his leadership wisdom to. His inspiring actions and growing influence became internationally renowned while the British continuing on abusing their immoral power out of desperation and being pressured by the rest of the world taking Gandhi's side of independent belief. The passive protests moved India towards their desired independence, even when facing the complicated prices that doesn't deter Gandhi from his inspiring stance. Richard Attenborough's passionate project met many setbacks since initial approvals, then finally seeing the final product's scope expresses how much this meant to him. There are 2-3 mediums you can access in getting to know the saint life and challenging times of Gandhi, but the visual aid under cinematic storytelling is transportive absorbent as detailed masses proved significantly important as extents to one man's influence. This rules equally if solely dramatized just for the picture like most artistic licenses as a composited glimpse(s) towards recurringly patterned facts narrowed down brilliantly towards a scene that sums those saw, recorded moments under similar intimate impacts. Ordinary treatments would minimize as a shorter picture considering how lengthy it is, which just to show as introduction to Attenborough's directorial capabilities and approach, especially when pursuing to adapt his dream, as Gandhi's growth must be told patiently with major events covered as main points in his mindful revolution. This gives us time to digest what Gandhi's still teaching us till we find ourselves sharing his emotional outlook as a few explosive events took place and we're reacting similarly to his thought processes. Like how much this film is a definitive staple for Attenborough's directorial skills, writer John Briley, who specialized in writing screenplays for biographical films, peaked his penmanship when he developed the buildup for Gandhi's wisdom and properly set up the stage for how the powerful messages should be delivered. He solidified the substances as we find optimism that Gandhi carried through his challenges, either his own or by someone else by opposition, and rightfully depicted the social class conflicts that may have blurred but unpredictably risen as something timelessly relevant with appliable relations, an equivalent to Gandhi's wisdom we should listen to. The cast are committed to their roles as they performed with both graceful strength and sympathetic outrageousness with harsh baseless beliefs as they conduct pivotal moments, but who truly led them all is Ben Kingsley as the eponymous leader. Kingsley's an English actor who's half Indian from his father's side sharing the same ethnicity with Gandhi himself, and he perfected the role outstandingly, as well seemingly originated how a showcase revives a figure if the embrace hardens to the point embodying the person in every way. An astounding breakthrough that defines his caliber when he expertly delivers wisdom like how Gandhi would with spiritually proudful acceptance. The entertainment value for "Gandhi" connects with Indian cinema, visualized within the declining form of the epic scope's Golden Age reminiscence, a surprising platform for couple renowned talents, and an early showcase for Kingsley expressing, and justifying, his range. Upon seeing not only doesn't disappoint through the latter but turned out as a delivery platform to spread Gandhi's teachings to be heard whilst generationally envisioned over the affected theming regarding class conflicts unveiling mirrored disparities that are similarly occurring today. This film can be considered a time capsule over his revolution as it finely proves how much influence can be had through his wise approach to healing societies. Of course not without opposition as the historical contexts here show the British's ugly, darker side when it comes to power, standing for neandertals who refuse peaceful alternatives. The true climax near the end showed the deep ends of how anger blinds and cowards, before realizing who they truly are like a hidden message Gandhi sparked that stopped the riots. A deserving Best Picture winner worth watching and reflecting on as we could all learn from Gandhi's legendary character and how to paraphrase his messages when applying them as those ripples have felt elsewhere. (A-)

Wow...Very Powerful...This is A All Time Classic. The acting especially by Kingsley is incredible for 3 hours you become so invested in his character because of how humble, charming and riveting his character is. The dialogue is so sharp and witty as well. The cinematography is incredible with epic wide shots filled with depth and breathtaking vistas and detailed well framed intimate moments. The music is Good but I would say this was the weakest point as it is very sparingly used and not exactly catchy but memorable and when used it was used well. The editing & pacing were both incredible. This movie has such a razor sharp focus and narrative never feeling like any scene is a waste of time or pointless and never going on too long which was shocking. Filled with funny moments, powerful moments and heartbreaking moments and inspiring feelings of hope, awe and respect throughout 3 Hours. This is a film everyone should try once.

The name Gandhi inspires thoughts of peaceful resistance, equality, as well the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom. To distill a life that achieved those goals more than most people into a film is no small feat, but this movie rises to the occasion quite well.

This is a sobering, long watch. Its certainly thought provoking and it made me feel ashamed of how Britons treated the Indian people at the time of British rule over the Raj in India, in the early to mid 20th century. Some of the dialogue is quite chilling but I'm pleased to say that the violence depicted isn't what I'd think of as unnecessarily gory and so it doesn't in any way promote or glamorise bloody violence, thankfully. Its a long watch at around about the 3 hour mark but its worth a watch for the thorough depiction of Britains involvement in India and the way Gandhi attempted to stand up for his people in non violent ways, which is certainly admirable. Its about standing up for yourself and your people and demonstrating that there are indeed other ways of doing things, ways that may not be acknowledged by those who loom over you and dictate things to yourself but ways that can have their own effectiveness in time. Surely Gandhi is someone worth respecting for his methods and indeed Ben Kingsley does well portraying this revered person. I think if I had to use a phrase to describe the message of this film, it'd be 'the power of peace'. Indeed, there are few such films made nowadays that have remarkably little in the way of violence, sadly. Overall, I'd recommend this film.

Watching this right after Imitation Game was interesting, as they're two biopics on opposite ends of a spectrum. The Turing biopic frustrated the viewer by having people get in the way of his progress; Gandhi excludes all of the negative aspects of the subject's life and just shows a long string of successes for him. It also shows the difference between a good lead performance and a fantastic one as Kingsley was relatively inexperienced and yet really seemed to transform himself into his character whereas Cumberbatch treated Turing like an extension of his own personality. I actually liked that the movie ran for over 3 hours as I really didn't know much about the subject before watching it and, somewhat embarrassingly, I didn't know that Pakistan had once been a part of India! I also hadn't known that Gandhi had been a lawyer or had spent any time in South Africa. On the other hand, if compared to another biopic with a happy ending (Eri Brockovich) there's a pretty big gap in entertainment value here. This came off very much like a movie a classroom would put on for its students and not one that many would go see in theaters. I'm glad to have seen it!

The epic film of the 1980's, and arguably the most remarkable acting performance in film history. Ben Kingsley is Mahatma Gandhi, and it truly shows on all the supporting actors. Everything about this film is amazing, so much that it feels almost like being present in the historic events. Simply a fantastic achievement.

Hard not to turn this into a great movie given that Gandhi was one of the greatest few people to ever live. However, this movie nailed it despite the white man playing Gandhi.

An amazing film, not unlike the amazing life the film's subject lived.

The first half of the movie made me develop an interest in Mohandas Gandhi and why he developed as he did. You see him young, wearing a turban but otherwise a regular suit and tie, and he encounters racism when he is thrown off a train for illegally being an a first class compartment when he is an Indian. Then he leads a struggle against racism in South Africa, winning some success before moving to India, which he says (in the movie) is a strange country to him. He would fight against British colonial rule of India, but then realizes that ending it might only lead to a government of Indians who would be just as bad-and then he adopts his famous white Indian clothing. After that, the movie falters, and we see less about Gandhi than the political events that follow, not delivered with great accuracy. Ben Kingsley delivers a perfect performance, looking and acting the part. But the image of Gandhi is completely idealized, and he never gets angry or otherwise seems like a real human being. Indeed, there were things about the historical Gandhi that would appall most people. But this is a movie to entertain, not teach.

Clocking in at over three hours, is Richard Attenborough's Gandhi too long? Probably. Are there too many unnecessary secondary characters? Probably. Is it worth watching? Absolutely. The film covers Gandhi's life from his beginnings as a social activist in 1890s South Africa to his assassination in 1948. It is an expansive epic in every sense, from the spectacular cinematography to the wide scope of its themes to the cast of thousands, but it owes its success to the remarkable performance of Ben Kingsley who gives a memorable performance of the man who initiated revolution through the concept of non-violent protest.
