Georgetown Reviews

Jan 10, 2024

There's a bluntness to the narrative I appreciate. Mott is so obviously a grifter and the elite D.C. spaces he infiltrates are populated by people who firmly believe they could never be grifted which makes them the perfect target for someone who has ambition without much intelligence.

It starts off a bit boring, but soon drags one into the dark and strange story of this sleazebag, climbing up ranks of imaginary fame and fortune. Unfortunately there are people like that all across the globe, charming themselves into ever higher positions of influence. Some wreaking havoc in the process, other cheating millions, even billions out of unsuspecting victims. All gaining what they should not have. Christoph Waltz's and Vanessa Redgrave's performances are impeccable and really bring this story to life. True or not! 6 1/2 out of 10 points.

Good play of the actors. Story is normal and not surprising.

Christopher Waltz knows how to embody the narcissistic grifter to a tee. "You remind me of a young Ullricht Mott" honing in on young diolomat Weatherford as his next satelitte to orbit Motts self agrandised reality. One reviewer said Motts performance was too clown like. But its honestly Chilling if you've ever had the misfortune to have to deal with a self aggrandising userer narcissist.

A very good movie with unpredictable plot…. So refreshing to see a movie with no super avengers or cops and robbers in it… I think you will like it. Mature.

Although it is a true story, it doesn't resonate with as many people beyond the beltway. Pretty fascinating despite this, but is Waltz limited to taking on these roles of deception? It was on Amazon.

A world that cataclysmically outgrows a man is made into motion picture masterfully. An excellent performance by Christoph Waltz amd Vaness Redgrave. Trauma,Guilt and Emptiness inside of Albrecht Mott's character is enacted well. Both lead characters were supplemented with sincere performances making this a worthwhile watch. Georgetown with it's clever flashforwards gives Mott's journey a supernatural touch. Not a story about a predator but a unique consumer in a society that's consciously too doubtful, too complex and negligent. A very strange and a tragic story of loneliness well made to a film.

This is what I dislike about RT. This is a good movie; not great, but good. It is a story well-told with a good cast. I can't believe it has a 63 rating!

It's a shame to have wonderful actors in a film that I wanted to walk out of before I made it halfway through.

If it wasn't true it would be a disgusting movie. Being true makes the movie interesting even though the truth is disgusting.

This is an exquisite film with acting icons bringing it. The assemblage of actors is part of what makes it compelling but the storytelling order and attention to the smallest, but exquisite set details make it worth your time. It draws you in - even as its the oldest trick in the "get rich quick" book.

Enjoyable tale with good performances by great actors

Waltz should stick to acting - which he is AMAZING AT.

A social climber (Christoph Waltz) charms his way through the D.C. elite until he's married to a wealthy, much older woman (Vanessa Redgrave) and hosting dinner parties in their Georgetown townhome. Ulrich Mott (Waltz) is a shadowy figure with a mysterious past. "This story does not in any way claim to be the truth," the movie begins. "Nonetheless, it is inspired by actual events." Perhaps sticking to the truth would've been more interesting here, however, the film posits more questions than it answers. How did Mott pull off his "military experience"? What… happened to him? The courtroom scenes are painfully boring — probably should've just cut them altogether. The whodunit element is also nonexistent, as even a tease of someone else dunning it doesn't appear. Instead, Georgetown is one of those movies you come for the acting — largely Waltz, a phenomenal actor, but also for Redgrave, whose character is gaslit around every corner, and Annette Benning as Amanda, Elsa's (Redgrave) frustrated, law professor daughter, who deserved more screen-time. It's a film that concerns the unctuousness of some of the most reptilian in our society. Come for Waltz, stay for the beautiful eponymous neighborhood and to watch our Neo-Liberal overlords get cheated and swindled.

Never really liked many of Christopher Waltz's past overly showy turns but then, they were mostly in typically juvenile, show-off Tarantino movies so, had to make some compensations. Here he plays a real-life mythomaniac with a measure of self-doubt and wanna-be super socialite ego – he also directs with a good measure of success. Based on a factual murder and bizarre case of identity crisis, it's nicely produced, photographed, and features an interesting music score. Redgrave plays a German-born journalist, who's the subject of his attentions because of her strong social connections within political circles. For some, what's going on might not always be as focused as it should be (mainly because the main character needed to be fleshed out more thoroughly) but this tends to become a little clearer as it progresses. The Washington ‘set' comes in for a mostly deserved dressing down - with the parties and often superficial high-flying ‘connections' but it seems this mismatched ‘husband and wife' (of convenience) are at times as opportunistic as one another, albeit with some unbecoming results. The unfortunate journalist's daughter (Bening) has to stand by and witness her mother be used, in all the peculiar set-ups and idiosyncratic extremes by an opportunistic queer, sleeping his way to the top of the social dung heap, without any honesty or moral compass whatsoever.

An excellent storytelling of a sad occurrence. Perfect cast. Christopher Walz is always amazing.

Well done, Herr Waltz, especially for a directorial debut! Great choice of a story line, especially for character development, while maintaining a properly solid pace. Also, the cast....perfection. An intriguing watch for anyone even slightly interested in "the way of things" in Washington, DC, and/or anyone fascinated by how skilled (and flawed) manipulative people can be. Long live movies just like this one. It's a nice reminder that an examination of human beings/how we behave + the big screen + great actors/directors is really all that is necessary for an audience to be engaged and entertained. Huge budget films cannot be all there is to choose from when movie lovers decide to "go to the movies"--wherever that takes place. If you agree, support movies like this and give it a watch!
