Gerald's Game Reviews

Apr 19, 2025

This movie is an enigma. On paper, it sounds like a boring movie: a woman is stuck, handcuffed to a bed for a long time, she eventually escapes. It was considered unfilmable for quite a while. But Mike Flanagan did a great job with this film and at this point, it's like he's physically incapable of making a bad King adaptation. The main thing that makes this entertaining is that Jessie has visions. Instead of just having thoughts about how to escape like in the novel, she has visions of Gerald and herself that talk to her about how she can and can't escape. It shows that she's slowly going insane and makes this feel more like a bottle episode of a 온라인카지노추천 show, like Smithereens from Black Mirror. It's great. The theme of fear, as well, is explored in an interesting way: through the Moonlight Man. He's a stalker that scared Jessie and who appears at night time, being a direct threat for the film. And then, some time later, she confronts him when she finds out who he is, but he isn't as scary as she remembered. She literally says: "You're so much smaller than I remember". It's a nice touch and kinda reminds me of Halloween Ends and that film's theme of fear. Overall, it's a movie that sounds boring on paper, but in execution, it's amazing.

Slowing slipping into madness and it’s not your fault.

Movie passes the time. Psychological horror but not great. Not much that happens in this movie. Book was probably better

This movie was one of the most disturbing and suspenseful movies I have ever watched, and it was awesome. Sometimes the plot and story were a little slow and boring, but it was worth it to feel the intensity of the movie. Another great adaption of Stephen King's work! I enjoyed watching it, I highly recommend it for fans of horror and thrillers!

A middle-aged couple go away for the weekend to a remote cottage with the purpose of reigniting their relationship. During a kinky sex game, the woman accidentally kills her husband. Handcuffed to the bed, she enters a state of delirium that awakes all of her inner demons and past traumas. "Gerald's Game" proves that a simple story and setting are sometimes enough to entertain the audience and still create an unconventional plot. A solid adaptation of one of the most enigmatic novels from Stephen King.

Boring. Flat characters. No story line

I didn't have any idea what to expect when I went in to this movie, but I'm very much a Flanagan fan. I loved how this was just a retrospective of the main female character's past. The beginning very much is just for shock value and to set up the situation. The flashbacks were creepy and horrific from a character perspective.

This was a fun movie to watch, the characters felt fully thought out. The story is such a simple one to tell but incredibly rich with back story about our main character.

For 2017: one of Carla Gugino's best performances based on the book by Stephen King it deals with a lot of disturbing content from repressed memories, childhood trauma, and mind games Jesse and her husband, Gerald (Bruce Greenwood) go up to a secluded cabin for a long weekend to improve their love-life but it takes a dark turn when he has a heart attack during the seduction and she's helplessly handcuffed to the bed with no means of escape she can suffer starvation, dehydration or risk getting torn to shreds by a rabid dog it's a mind game as she fights off her inner demons of what went wrong with her marriage to what happened when she was 12 years old there's some frightening imagery inside her head not to mention a very gory scene involving her escape, I actually turned away because it was so damn graphic the film takes some time to take off since it's confined to one area but Gugino pulls it off so well the choice is up to her to give in or keep trying our minds can trap us at any moment during a horrific situation but they also create monsters if we let them another fine Stephen King adaptation

One of the best adaptaions to Stephen Kings works. The substance was there and the story was well developed.

Liked it a lot. Difficult to watch at times, but just like you’d expect from Mr. King, the characters all have interesting backstories which makes it interesting on many levels.

An interesting concept with decent acting, ruined by the ending. Jessie's trauma and her mindset is heavily explored in the movie, she isn't left alone to her thoughts even once without us seeing it all, and it all tied together with her escape super well. But after she escaped is when the movie took a nosedive. This was one of those movies where not explaining things at the end would've served it better than explaining it. But they explained the end and also did it poorly. It felt like a copout more than a proper resolution to things. It is a shame when a movie you are invested in has a bad ending, makes all of it feel like a waste of time.

Such a waste of a great concept. Ending made me actually cringe.

If it's possible for Mike Flanagan to have directed this film like a Stephen King short story, he has. There's a neat one-room premise, a modern/relevant take on the bulk of the source material, some wonderful central performances and a relatable slew of voices inside your head. Classic King ending intact. Bonkers. But done well.

This was not good. Poorly written with such awkward dialogue I kept admiring how the actors tried to commit to it despite its poor quality. What exactly was the dramatic action? I don't know the original story by Stephen King, but the source material had to have been better than this screenplay adaptation. And the end gets so weird and incomprehensible I wondered if I'd been drugged. Weird, sometimes gross. I did, however, admire the use of maxi-pads for bandages. But I think (besides some solid acting, especially by the kid playing the young version of Carla Gugino) that was the best part. Woof.

gut wrenching... but great, kudos to the actress!

Very faithful to the book which is always good. Not as creepy as it could have been.

One of Director Mike Flanagan's first interactions with the works of Stephen King was 2017's 'Gerald's Game's. SYNOPSIS: 'A couple tries to spice up their marriage in a remote lake house. After the husband dies unexpectedly, the wife is left handcuffed to their bed frame and must fight to survive and break free.' This film was probably the start of my love affair with any film or 온라인카지노추천 series created by, or directed by, Mike Flanagan. And looking back now the cast of 'Gerald's Game' will return over and over again within his works. The film itself is the perfect adaptation of King's work, and is delivered on a small scale with a compact cast all of whom deliver brilliant performances. Gugino carries the film as she slowly descends into madness and battles demons from her past. It's a film that proves that the demons we face in our lives can be physical and also come from the depths of our own subconscious. It's a film very much built around trauma and its effects on normal people. One of the best Stephen King adaptations around. 8/10
