All star cast. Mob nastiness meets Hollywood nastiness. Travolta the coolest.
I watched this movie for the second time after the passing of Gene Hackman and rediscovered his subtle but solid comedic abilities as a movie producer who is in trouble for his gambling debts. This is a very easy to watch and thoroughly enjoyable movie about a loanshark played by Travolta who aspires to becoming a producer. James Gandolfini is a has been stunt guy who is also a Dad and is acting as a clumsy muscle man for a con who also wants to be a producer. There isn't a lot of laugh out loud or physical comedy here. Just a lot of ironic situational comedy that will play out like a delicious seven course meal all the way to the end.
John Travolta at his cool best. Good plot. Great acting except for Devito. He brings the whole movie down. Fast forward through his scenes. It does detract from the movie.
Too much of John Travolta regressing back into Vinnie Barbarino for my taste
The Critics consensus is right on. Entertaining and constantly engaging spoof of Hollywood-Miami gangsterism. Travolta's lead role is strong.
The only movie I have ever walked out on. I put up with it for about half way through but just didn't,t get it. I guess I,m in a minority here. It was soo slooow...
Despite the screenplay easily (and far too quickly) tying up all it's loose ends, it remains an enjoyable trifle. If the Travolta that gave this performance showed up more often he'd be infinitely more successful.
This is a really entertaining film about the intersection of the mob world with Hollywood. The characters are goofy, there's lots of pop culture references, and it's a light, humorous film about Tinseltown.
Paul Rudd was not in this movie
This is a very good comedy style con movie. I like Traviltas character a lot in this classic.
One of the best adaptations of an Elmore Leonard novel ever, thanks to a game cast and smart direction. John Travolta has never been cooler as Chili Palmer, a loan shark and movie buff who comes to Hollywood with dreams of entering the film business, only to find it more cutthroat than mob work. He gets fantastic support from the rest of the cast, particularly Gene Hackman in a hilarious turn as a B-movie producer. Behind the camera, Barry Sonnefeld expertly adapts the Leonard's Hollywood satire, with pointed jabs on stars behavior and how a movie is actually made (the ending gag of the film that finally gets produced is the ultimate punchline). All in all, one of the smartest movie satires ever made.
Perfectly enjoyable for me, most credit likely due to the stacked cast list and somewhat quirky tone, which kept the stakes light enough for laughs without sacrificing suspense in the plot. 6.5/10
A joy to watch John Travolta in one of his prime roles. This is a film that seems like it was truly loved by those who produced it, with many great details to generate humour from satirizing the movie industry.
The mob is one thing but is Hollywood more clean and cut than it is? John Travolta, Gene Hackman, Rene Russo, Danny DeVito, James Gandolfini This was Elmore Leonard's 1990 novel of the same name which was pretty much his way of getting back at Hollywood but in a funny way. Travolta stars as Chili Palmer a loan shark who is commissioned by a casino manager to collect a debt from a B filmmaker and ends up a Hollywood producer. It's a chance to reinvent himself. Chili soon learns though the filmmaking business is just as dry and cutthroat. A black comedy but also a satire on the movie industry with commentary about power and creativity in Tinseltown. Everything from the endless jockeying for status afflicting everyone to the heartless consequences of an aging adulating youth to everyone having a script in their head ready to pitch. The childlike appreciation is spot on too with our personas wanting to match the roles we see onscreen. This is a celebration of the impulse to tell stories and the corresponding need to hear them. There is a lot of talking in this one but it's a very smart gangster movie.
Accidental revisit. I was never a big fan of this, but gave it another shot and still wasn't impressed. A huge cast of familiar faces from the 1990s in a Lock-Stock crime drama about gangsters trying to control Hollywood. Equivalent the pilot episode of a post millennium cable series It's a decent story, but lacks the wit and intensity necessary for today's' expectations. I'm assuming the modern network series is whole lot better.
Ok mediocre movie starring Danny devito and John travolta. I'll forget about this movie in 2 seconds.
Fun, clever and it has a great cast of characters.
The acting was really well done I wish we saw a little bit more of Danny DeVito‘s character. It's not a must see but it's definitely worth a walk
