G.I. Jane Reviews

Feb 15, 2025

I loved this movie, maybe this movie was meant for tomboy teens, I'm shocked so many people dislike it. I'd watch it again!

I don't know how anyone could rate this movie a half a star. Demi Moore killed in this. I'd like to see any starlet today go after it like this and get it done. superb.

Over 25 years old, I remember watching it years ago Demi Moore stars as Lieutenant Jordan O’ Neil who is recruited by senator Lillian DeHaven to join a newly inserted program allowing women to join the US Navy Yet she’s only chosen for her femininity under John Jaymes Urgale’s command She’ll not only have to prove she’s capable but prove to earn the respect But Jordan also has to combat the standards of making a statement about a woman not just joining the services because of her gender but because she is capable period This is like Jingoism meets hardcore feminism while shedding light on expanding roles for women in combat Still one of my favorite films of Ridley Scott and one of my favorite performances from Demi Moore even though she regrets shaving her head for the role Today though she keeps her hair long to defy stereotypes Her performance was praised despite mixed reviews and the movie only making $50 million but it became a cultural legacy standing against the sexual politics Her character struggles to gain acceptance from her male counterparts in the navy seals fighting the sexism and chauvinistic bureaucracy One of Viggo Mortensen's earliest roles pre-Lord of the Rings Who knew this movie would serve as a prelude to Chris Rock’s punchline made at this years Oscar's? Scott struggled with constant rewrites and actually got to work with the NAVY seals Female military officers even write this day to the director praising his direction and the ongoing fight against misogyny A really good effort by Scott and Moore

If you don't think about it logically GI Jane is a fun ride.

Seems like everyone is trying too hard.

I'm a little late to the party on this one, 25 years late actually but I thought it was decent. Viggo Mortensen was good.

G.I. Jane is not subtle in any way. It starts off with a pretty heavy-handed message, and then it lays it on thick for the entire movie. When the plot is not being preachy, it's predictable, and when it's not being predictable, it's kind of boring. The music, the writing, and the acting are trying so hard to force the audience to feel emotions, but the film still comes off as hollow & flat. Ridley Scott is a talented director. Demi Moore is a talented actress and is possibly in the best shape of her life. I was also pleasantly surprised to see a pre-Lord-of-the-Rings Viggo Mortensen. However G.I. Jane is one big misfire.

G.I. Jane 2, can't wait to see it!

It hasn't aged every well with its on the nose commentary on sexism and it's overt 90s action movie cliches, but it's still worth viewing to understand the Oscar's joke.

This is a pretty horrible film, but Demi Moore is smoking hot in it. As someone who considers themselves to be a straight-ish woman, I think this one speaks to my physical narcissism, as I want to be and f&*k this version of myself. When they used to play ads of Moore doing pull-ups and shaving her head, as a teen girl I was all: YAAAAAAAAS...

G.I Jane was a powerful movie, it displayed a hard working woman wanting to prove herself in a mans world. Demi Moore was perfect for this role. I truly felt her every struggle wanting to be viewed and treated equally among men.

In my last review of White Squall, I stated that a lead performance can rise above any other element of the film but in the case of G.I. Jane the opposite is exact, it doesn't so much rise above those but rather sinks beneath them instead. The story goes that a test program has been set up by Senator DeHaven. To call the Navy out for gender inequality within their own set-up and has devised a way to recruit a female candidate to rise through the Navy Seals basic training and prove them otherwise. Demi Moore's Lieutenant Jordan O'Neil has been selected for the task. She sees it as her duty to undertake it and trump those that stand in her way. Even against a doubting all-male group of recruits and those in charge, who seek only to control her. This film certainly has honourable intentions with its statement of gender inequality in the world. Even today it's still a troubling issue and needs to be addressed, not just in military circles. The message in the film is clear and present, and so for that, it needs to be cherished, but I just wish as a whole, the film was strong enough to stand aside with its message. The training sequences are suitably raw. The audience is forcefully pulled in the mud with O'Neil and the rest of them, it almost has a Full-Metal-Jacket-style-of-bravado and intensity, which makes it very thrilling to watch and also unnerving. Viggo Mortensen's performance as the drill commander is excellent. Although the script does require him to border on from genuine leader to cartoony villain during some hard-hitting training scenes. While on that subject, Demi Moore just doesn't convince in the lead role. I'm sure that she and the rest of the cast went through really tough training for the roles required of them and it does show. However, as a recruit suffering through the worst of sexist behaviour, alongside such strict training rituals, she only comes across as mildly annoyed or just plain narked. I just wish that perhaps a stronger actor – or even with better direction – could provide us with a fully realised character. The film does have issues with narrative as well, there are times when the film feels like a cut and paste job when going through the proceedings. When we are not watching the brutal training takes place, the film will come back to dark meetings of sinister politicians and leaders. Discussing bitterly with O'Neil's place in the military. This goes back and forth a handful times to the point that I wish the plot would advance further. Even when a particular twist occurs later in the third act, this feels immediately set aside for a mission involving missing plutonium. It feels like the script is trying to cram a fair few plotlines in and I think a script polish could have improved it all somewhat. This film is by no means boring. Scott has proved time and time again that he can stage excellent action set pieces and create legal character drama. If the film had a better script and perhaps a lead actor that could give the role more depth and lasting power, it would be a less than flawed film. The film is far from perfect. However, I think it has watchable value for certain action scenes and a real message of heroism fighting the system. Which is clear and well done here; it's just okay.

Classic. The combination of Ridley Scott's phenomenal directing and Demi Moore's commitment to excellence makes G.I. Jane a must see. The cast is great. No weak links.

G.I Jane is a really exciting and fun addition to Ridley Scott's filmography.

I found this film to be an excellent example of battle of sexism and shows that just because they are women doesn't mean they can't do the job.
