Gigi Reviews

A great musical. It was about a young woman living in Paris. She was being taught how to be fancy and was going to be in an arranged marriage. The outfits were nice and the scenes of Paris were great.

Modern audiences are right to condemn this for its utter objectification of women, especially teens. Times have changed, and to say this hasn't aged well is an understatement. "Thank Heaven for little girls," indeed.

Gigi truly deserved winning all 9 of its Oscar nods. The mystery is why none of its four principal actors received a nomination. Leslie Caron should have been nominated for Best Lead Actress. Changes are, Maurice Chevalier would have gotten a supporting nod if he hadn't received top billing along with Caron and Louis Jourdan. Hermione Gingold really should have gotten a supporting nod, as well. And Jourdan is spot on as Gaston.

Gigi features an intriguing premise that offers visually pleasing portrayals of Belle Époque Paris. While the musical pieces are well integrated into the film and story, I found them to largely be unmemorable. This was unfortunate, as the production team’s focus on the musical aspect took precedence over plot and character development. Despite its impressive awards and being featured in the National Film Registry, it’s not to my taste. I would only watch this again in certain circumstances.

This has been my favorite movie since I saw it in the early eighties. I didn't even understand the whole film because I was a tween and k still loved it. If you do not like musicals, don't watch it. If you love musicals, it is a must see. If you love turn of the century Paris or European history when cars had JUST started arriving in public. Watch it. Plus, they opened Maxim's just for the film. (It was closed for many years.) Just watch it to have a wonderful laugh and listen to beautiful people singing about things that aren't necessarily so beautiful. ("I don't understand the Parisians!")

Nice musical about Paris at the run of the 19th century. Outdated but fun.

Some of the Lerner are Lowe songs are legitimately good, but there just isn't much else here that I find all that appealing, even as a fan of musicals. That might simply be a result of how poorly the romance has aged.

If you want to take a trip back to the schmaltz of the 50's this is the film for you ! Totally unrealistic and romantic to a fault but populated by some of the brightest bygone stars.

The Oscar-winning "Gigi" was a hit or miss for me. Subtle and exaggerated writing mixed with performances that weren't very exciting. Minelli was an incredible figure in directing, but this did not deserve those nine awards.

One of the last big Hollywood musicals, released at a time when such films were no longer in vogue, Gigi felt, to me, like a last-ditch attempt to recapture the glory days. Paling in comparison to other musicals such as The Sound Of Music, My Fair Lady or Singin' In The Rain, the film has the thinnest of plots, the most uninteresting of characters, and songs that are completely forgettable. About the only one which really stands out is ‘Thanks Heavens For Little Girls', and that's just because it's so damn creepy. I can't understand why everyone makes such a big fuss about the film, since aside from the costumes and the set designs, there's really nothing to talk about. Its basically a fancy-dress party that goes on for 2 hours. I found Leslie Caron's performances to be charming and likeable, and while the other characters have their moments, most of them simply blend together, largely because most of them all want exactly the same thing, which they talk about at every opportunity. I can see that a lot of effort went into it, and it was probably fun to make, but it's lack of an enjoyable story and engaging characters made it a very long hour and 56 minutes.

Love Paris but I thought the story was lame and actually rather offensive (old dudes creeping on very young ladies). Certainly in my bottom five best picture winners.

One of the best movie musicals. Winner of 9 Academy Awards. Leslie Caron is perfect. Wonderful cast. Don’t miss it!

Carron has plenty of charm, there's that famous song Thank Heavens for little girls. There's also a lot of spoken singing and there's very little else. The whole thing is such a bore.

So "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" was borderline scary. Otherwise it remained mostly true to the novella, with some expansions and added scenes.
