Girl Reviews
Just being age 15 and training for professional ballet is stress enough. Lara's brave acceptance of hormone treatment preceding surgery accounts for rushing the final physical amputation. Her thin body and attempts at lovemaking explain growing despair. The film gives her father little help in discussing the causes of stress. There is also no reason stated for a mother's absence. In toto, a marvelous look into adolescence and dance alongside gender anxiety.
Good film, and impressive performance by Victor Polster. Second film from Lukas Dhont I've watched (after Close), with a related theme both, and this filmmaker has caused me a very good impression
I highly recommend this movie to everyone. I think it's a movie everyone *should* watch. Let me explain in a few sentences below. So many aspects of our lives have been politicized and driven to a statistic that we forget about *each other*. People. Individuals. I'm guilty of this, myself. I had a very close friend who opened up to me about being transgender that, without question, was looking for someone to be there to support her. I wish I had seen this movie before that period of time. I have a gift of being "that friend" that everyone comes to when they're going through tough times, but I know I fell short in this instance. She was seeing counselors, doctors, specialists, etc., and I felt that she had her bases covered. But she simply needed a friend. She took her own life about a year ago. I know it's not my fault, but I do feel that there's more that I could have done that may have made a difference. As a result, this movie really touched me. I was hesitant to watch it because of the recent situation I described above, but my wife insisted. The movie was simply incredible. The acting is top-notch (the main actor who plays Lara is extremely talented), the cinematography was spot-on, and the movie really pulls you into the main character's life. You can actually feel the angst, pain and hope that she is experiencing throughout the entire movie. I wish I could rate it 10 stars!
Overall well done portrayal of the complexity of gender dysmorphia during adolescence. However, the ending was very poorly handled; the consequences - physical and mental - of such a significant incidence of self-harm were handled irresponsibly actually could be seen as an acceptable means to an end given the last scene.
Absolutely...loved it! It's a tad longer and maybe could have been culled by 15 mins, I had drop-offs in the middle, especially with her ballet sequences BUT it's a story that needs to be seen. Beautiful!
A good foreign film. Touches on sensitive issues and deals with a lot of introspective moments. I found it very singular in its focus. Could have done without the ending! Interesting style of filming... You may like it or hate it.
A very sensitive movie. Very good!
This is an interesting film that doesn't pull any proverbial punches. I thought the main character, Lara, was played remarkably well by Victor Polster. I noticed that she doesn't seem to speak too often, for a main character certainly - she is quite quiet and contemplative. Her desire to be what she believes to be a perfect woman/lady is made very clear. I understood her parents (mainly her father) concerns too. Its an insightful film, certainly. I felt I could understand her humiliation at times, the need for privacy. This is a surprisingly memorable film which I would recommend as a poignant film, yes.
Stunning dance skills by Victor Polster, but too hard ending. Pity that Lara and her motivation remain a mystery, why not opening herself a bit to only ONE person?
Что за неожиданный поворот мы хотели увидеть Джейсона Момоа ❤️🥺
The performance of Lara/Victor is just phenomenal, i can't say enough about it, he is holding the whole move on his shoulders while playing a person from the opposite sex in such a convincing way that i'd say it's almost on the verge of impossible. The story itself is as confusing as adolescence can be- Lara wants to do a gender surgery, be in the one of the best ballet schools, tries to figure out if she likes boys or girls and isn't happy with the pace of things. This brings us to the main problem of the movie- that Lara doesn't like her male body & wants to be a female. I think that the movie shows that this is an anomaly that can be treated with love and care
Girl is a very personal story told with genuine empathy and thoughtful perspective that is wonderfully acted by first-time actor Victor Polster and strongly directed by Lukas Dhont.
Original and based on a true story. This story pulls at my heart strings. I can see the conflict of her life and the drastic actions she takes to live her dreams and identity. Perhaps an eye-opener to make the audience aware of how what seems harmless is actually offensive. Rooting for her.
A 15 year old girl, born in a boy's body is finally getting her sex change. She works hard at school and does a lot of ballet lessons and seem to stay occupied and fairly happy. The hormone cures are not making change happen as fast as she wants to and she does some not so smart choices. Her therapist and mostly her father is not too happy with it. That's basically the plot. The film is lead by a fantastic performance from Victor Polster - his only film to date. It has sublime cinematography and it's an interesting watch, dealing with a very touchy and quite relevant matter for many people in these open gender days. It's hard to watch, you sympethize and also get fascinated by the protagonists drive and couragement. It got a very raw last fifteen minutes or so, but the build up is quite slow. A solid film, but it does lack a bit of punch. 7.5 out of 10 pieces of tape.
Una excelente adaptación emocional de la transformación interna que pasa una persona que no se identifica con el género con el que nació. La desesperación, frustración, y un gran camino por recorrer que te lleva poco a poco en la trama del personaje principal
