Gleason Reviews
gut wrenching powerful raw unforgetable. A view into the most intimate moments of a family dealing with the most difficult medical diagnosis imaginable.
Wow. That was a deep movie. Hard to watch but very emotional. I think what made it particularly hard was watching him go from an NFL professional -- strong, big, powerful -- to just withering away. And yet knowing that his brain was fully functional even as his body decayed. The relationship with his wife was so authentic and real. And his challenges so palpable. They don't have any "end credit", but I was surprised to learn that he is still alive 4 years after the movie came out.
The amount of obstacles his wife and he overcame and continue to, what an inspiration
What a story. I was trying to complete a task wile watching this movie. But was captivated by the story immediately. I put my task away and watched intently for 2 hours without blinking. A great story told simply, wile raising awareness for a noble cause. 5/5
A heart-wrenching, deeply personal look at the effects of ALS. It's difficult to watch what happens to Steve Gleason and those around him (particularly his wife Michel Varisco), but it is also inspiring to see all they have done to fight back against this terrible disease. Grade: A
Heart wrenching. Prepare the tissues. Beautiful story but so tragic. Definitely wouldn't call it uplifting but more like realistic. The dynamic between Gleason and his wife is so intriguing and real.
Watch this film, period. Sorry La La Land, I thought you would be my fav film of 2016, but Gleason just made it to the top of the list. Friends in the states with Amazon Prime (and those flying AA), you can watch it free right now. And you should. This is the sweetest but most heartbreaking film you will experience from 2016. I'm glad this was a night flight with all lights dimmed, because I was pretty much teary eyed from the start and lost it a few times. Such a courageous family to intimately document all the struggles of ALS, but also a beautiful testament to the will to live because of love. Two thumbs up, way way up.
Very very sad and moving
A terribly sad and heartfelt movie, sometimes very difficult to watch. An insight into the devastation that is ALS and the impacts of it upon family, but equally a film about the strength of the human spirit and redemptive power of love.
Remarkable story, and an exceptionally devoted couple. Gleason tells the story of former NFL defenseman, Steve Gleason, who was diagnosed with ALS after his retirement. Gleason is a pro athlete in the virtuous mold of Johnny Unitas (in contrast to Broadway Joe Namath). I'm struck by how little he fixates about his past celebrity as a pro athlete, e.g., one with millions of adoring fans, and his new post-ALS life, in which he confronts the profound philosophical questions of human existence that his disease has brought to the fore.
Be prepared to cry through the whole thing. So moving and inspiring. Moves through the intricacies of what it means to be diagnosed and suffer with ALS.
Imperdivel!
