God's Country Reviews
This is one of the best films of recent years that I have seen. I found myself longing for a sequel at the end, soI could know what happens to the protagonist. Hers was an award deserving performnce.
This movie was absolutely retched. That’s all there is to say.
This movie was extremely slow with a poor story line. It just made no sense and characters were under developed. No real message and extremely boring and frustrating to watch. A waste of a good actor.
The movie toys with complexity in its first half but frustratingly the whole movie ultimately hinges on Newton's long suffering rightness. At every turn her anger and worldview get validated which makes for a pretty boring viewing experience. Also the depiction of academia here is utterly ridiculous.
The premise is ridiculous. The main character has lost her mind. The story makes no sense.
Though Thandiwe does a good job, the movie says absolutely nothing and soon becomes quite predictable about its final outcome. 60-70% of the movie are mere time fillers and have nothing to do with the core story, thus one can skip over those scenes, leaving nothing really worthwhile watching. 3/10 points.
Movie was awful, there was literally nothing to keep the audience involved. The movies plot was absolutely terrible. The protagonist was awfully written and literally the cause for everything. The ending was a complete dud and the best character had a bad ending. Movie alienated parts of its audience and a country life style and the title did not hold true to the movie.
How this got 80-some % is some kind of typo. BORING & hackneyed use of tropes to establish our protagonist is an earnest, nice lady surrounded by dismissive men & a rigged system. Then she goes & does something provocative & WAY out of line (if temporarily satisfying) when trying to assert herself & then acts like it's everyone else's fault that people assert themselves back. It's like watching a day in the life of my mom or waiting for that idiot to get out of the fast lane while doing 10 under. "They can go around me…". No, move already! & for crying out loud we sure don't need it on film.
What stars this movie receives are due largely to Newton’s performance. Otherwise, the movie is a grab bag of stereotypes and hot button issues, as if the creator’s said, “Hell, let’s just throw them all in.” There are occasional hints that the film may delve deeper into the reasons people hold the perspectives they do, but then the plot drops any opportunity for the characters to be humane in a relentless drive towards the preordained violent conclusion. Shame on the creators for using important issues as cover to sell us another pointless violent film, for in the end, it’s just violence their selling, nothing else.
I may have enjoyed this movie had it not been wrought with missed opportunity followed by the next. A near-significant plot development came during the church scene. Abruptly, it too fell short and became just another head-scratching wasted moment. Moreover, not a single character possessed a redeeming trait, save for the dog and the baby deer.
Skillfully weaves an immersive atmosphere, maintaining its distinctive mood throughout the film. The deliberate, slow-burning narrative captivates, pulling viewers into its world with an almost hypnotic quality. Despite stumbling in its final act, the film remains compelling due to its strong initial build-up. Touching on pertinent contemporary themes, it conveys impactful messages, yet its conclusion leaves a sense of dissatisfaction. While imperfect, "Gods Country" manages to engage, delivering thought-provoking moments that linger long after the credits roll.
Great film about race, being a POC in a very white society where she is ignored as a woman of color. Also makes you think about how privileged white people are when they say "I want to just live somewhere remote like a cabin in Montana" which is easy enough for them but for POC not so much - you constantly live in fear that there will be white people who treat you differently and also attack you or harm you where you don't get any help. I'm glad the writer decided to change the lead from a white man to a POC and they also hired a POC to write it versus just having a white person write about a perspective that is alien to them.
This movie was so refreshing... I will admit it started off slow, and I had to come back to it, but I had every intention to finish, I am a BIG fan of Thandie Newton and her performance was riveting. I saw others review and the comments about her mental instability... quite the contrary. That title belong to the worthless younger brother and when he got his just reward, I smiled gleefully! Although, I thought she should have given the older brother grace. But like I always say... you are the company you keep! This was definitely a story about a marginalized woman that wanted to be treated like a human being and was SOOO tired of the same outcomes for those that believe they are entitled to whatever they see fit. It's noteworthy to say she was underestimated and they never saw it coming...they never do! BRAVO!!!
Mediocre at best. Unrealistic characters and behavior.
Felt this in my BONES. So so good. So many people seem to have completely missed the point which TRACKS with the POINT OF THE FILM.
Long, drawn out and boring. It fails to deliver at the end. Avoid. It was not thrilling or gripping. The ending was anticlimactic.
Really boring film. The "Thriller" descriptor is just so far off. I enjoyed the lead actresses performance but the plot was super heavy handed and a lot of her decisions were pointlessly escalating situations. Cinematography was nice but could not save a very slow script. Would not recommend.
Had parts that seemed like they might develop into an interesting movie but nothing ever came together into a coherent story in the almost two hour run time. Most of the characters were not very compelling and had uninspiring backstories or none at all. Couple all that with a weak and anticlimactic ending and you get a regretful waste of time.
Boring. Waste of time! Waited through the whole thing for it to get good. Don't bother.
Fascinating, but ultimately frustrating, God's Country is how limo libs see the poor. The film tries to be so much: from sexual assault to racism. It is all so wedged in for no apparent reason. Square pegs into round holes overshadow a worthwhile performance from Thandiwe Newton in a meaty role. The villains come off as if they're out of a SNL sketch. And that ending. Are we in the reality based world or is everything a metaphor? Funny thing is the writers make Newton a semi-villain as well. Her character is supposed to be our hero, but is instead inherently unlikeable no matter how much sympathy a dead mother should bring. Swing and a miss! Final Score: 4/10
