Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Reviews
A love letter for monster movie fans with intense, massive battles between behemoths. Even better, the human subplots actually add to the film instead of being a drag on the monster smashing fun.

I think this is probably the correct direction for the Monsterverse and American Godzilla movies to go. Which is that this is very stupid, and it knows it is, and it rolls with it.

The New Empire is visually stunning and ultimately an epic on-screen Kaiju team-up with visuals worthy of IMAX screens. However, the story and dialogue are incredibly corny, presents forced exposition and you can't wait to skip all the human interactions.

Here we have a kaiju film that is so confident and unashamed of its ambitions that even the fans who don’t prefer this style can at least say, “It’s not for me, but I can respect it.”
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Sep 3, 2024
It goes without saying, but Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is absolutely no Godzilla Minus One, though if you’re going in expecting something of that quality in a film with Barbenheimer Godzilla, then frankly you only have yourself to blame.

...I’m [...] very aware that there is a lot of chatter online about The New Empire and how it’s just a WWE smackdown but with monsters and I’m like…so? I know what I came here for.

The two most famous kaijus in history are forced to join forces against a common enemy in what is one of the most fun film of the year so far

Vast parts of the film flash by without anything but guttural noises and explosions in the soundscape. It’s like listening to a metal garbage can filled with farm animals topple down the stairs.
| Original Score: 1/5 | Jul 2, 2024
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is one big, bright, dumb, expensive Saturday morning cartoon, and it’s a hell of a lot of fun.
| Original Score: 8/10 | Jul 2, 2024
I did enjoy this sequel in fits and starts, but at no point did I particularly respect it. I feel that is telling.
| Original Score: 5/10 | Jul 2, 2024
Godzilla x Kong is shrewdly aware of the importance of establishing a human value to the primary fight, but also offers the audience absurdly thrilling sequences of buildings being destroyed as monsters fighting to the death.

This one doesn’t even feel like a creature feature as much as a Transformers sequel: It’s noisy, punishing, soulless, needlessly convoluted, populated by nitwits and dullards, and choked with increasingly impersonal CGI.
| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Jun 18, 2024
Empire is some half-assed escapism, just like all the previous MonsterVerse entries.

This and "GvK" possess a straight-forward neon rock’n’roll vibe that suits the kind of rock’m sock’m energy of Titans coming to blows ...
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jun 11, 2024
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire may make small strides in terms of improving its storylines, but sadly it still succumbs to its usual bland, formulaic, and overly-familiar climax.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Jun 10, 2024
On one level, Godzilla x Kong is about noise. On another, it’s about King Kong teaming up with his spiky punk boyfriend to save the world.

Will Kong and Godzilla fight each other or team up against a new threat? Honestly, by the end of this movie, you won’t care.

At best, it is a boring and tiring sequel that gets lost in a void of bulky fights between lizards and gorillas in CGI. [Full review in Spanish]

Compare this movie to last year’s “Godzilla Minus One,” and it’s clear that the character’s Japanese originators still have a better handle on what makes Godzilla fearsome and tragic — and more than the sum of its computer-generated parts.

Dan Stevens being a wacky giant monster veterinarian was a delight.
