Goldstone Reviews

Nov 18, 2023

Detective Jay Swan arrives in Goldstone to investigate the disappearance of a young woman only to uncover corruption. When I started using Tubi I created a watchlist that is so ridiculously long I can't add anymore to it until I delete one. The film that's been on the list the longest is called Mystery Road. I had no idea this movie is a sequel to that. But I don't think it spoiled anything. This film follows many tropes of the stranger arriving in town to beat up the bad guys. These tropes are improved by two things. One, the involvement of Aboriginal actors. Two, several strong performances. Pederson is especially impressive as as the quiet and tormented Swan. And I loved seeing David Gulpilil again. There's a beautifully poignant scene with him. He passed away in 2021. I wasn't entirely convinced by the transformation of one of the characters.

I didn't like the first one, the second is even worse in my opinion, why do they keep making such stuff

While not as strong as Mystery Road, this is still a great thriller/drama led by the underrated Aaron Pedersen as Jay Swan.

Deconstruct the hero. In this case make him a drunk unable to come to terms with the loss of his daughter a year previously, This enables a young white police office to take over the role of most effective protagonist and leave our hero drinking and moping and eating dust. Why? These are the stories writers are coming up with these days, Tear down and destroy the heroes so they can pick up the pieces and the corporation can cash in again on a popular established IP.

This is a somewhat gritty watch, although its in a quite pretty setting. The contrast does lead to a relatively bleak feel present throughout. The cinematography is great but the plot is distinctly sobering, with some less than especially likeable characters and definite themes of fear and manipulation present. Its a perhaps thought provoking watch, not the kind of film I'd like to think about much after seeing due to the plotline but its a relatively decent film in general. There's a convincing sense of barrenness and isolation felt. Oh and also, the final scene I felt was surprisingly powerful.

I won't do spoilers, but what I was hoping for was the Jay Swan of Mystery Road, and he didn't really show up in this "sequel". The subplot with the young policeman helped it along, and the performance by the great Jacki Weaver at least makes it worth your time.

A look at aboriginal lands of Australia, big time business in the outlands, colliding with local culture. Protagonist detective looks into human trafficking, forced prostitution of Asian females. Wide open spaces and a slow moving story is worth the ride. Aaron Petersen perfect in role.

zero regrets giving this a watch. recommend. did wish the rest of the movie was as good as the cinematography. what the heck, that's why not all movies are as good as The Godfather.

Not a bad finding the missing person and finding corruption type movie . Nothing spectacular or original but good enough 2.7

Kept my interest in both the plot and ancestry. Asks 'where/what is home?' Recommended.

Although a bit slow at times, Goldstone benefits from solid performances, gorgeous landscapes, building tension and some moving moments emphasized by a beautiful score.

It has a beautifully paced, show-don't-tell grace to it, understanding communication through gesture and gaze, having the confidence and skill to guide the story based on that understanding.

Good movie but mystery road was better

Bleak beautiful landscapes with inner souls just like the characters. It's worth watching if you like your actors to emit tension without words. Technically made interesting by overhead shots. The lead exudes presence. His charge is pretty and the perfect learning tool.

The Australian outback is the real star of this film and it is magnificent and the rest is quite good!

A very decent sequel to Mystery Road

My rating doesn’t count anyway. You should try it. It’s all rigged to whatever they Fandango and politics. Give every single movie 1/2 a star and some will still get 100% rating. So I hope this gets above 67% with my boost.

Great shots and strong characters from a part of the world I didn't know much about going in. If you enjoy solid noirs, you'll most likely enjoy Goldstone.
