This is the worst movie. Terrible acting and an even worse story line. Do not waste your time.

A nice homage to the classic Casablanca.

A self-indulgent curiosity that has a classic vintage film look, but not the gripping story and memorable characters that could have made it special. Clooney is solid, Blanchett is great (as always), but the usually likable Maguire and Bridges are both mis-cast. Also, the screenplay is frustratingly confusing and the film's ending is completely flat—the audience has long been aware by then what depths Lena (powerfully played by Blanchett) is capable of to survive. In fact, the ending is a perfect example of what's wrong with film as a whole: the director seemed concerned exclusively with the Casablanca finale-like visuals.

What a waste of time. You can not create the classic movie-making period of the '40s. Move forward, honor the past.

Soderbergh does a real impressive job in recreating the look and style of a classic noir and he's got all the right people for the job. Clooney and Blanchette are perfect in their roles. The story is a little convoluted, but this is otherwise a damn solid love letter to film noir.

The people making it wanted to capture a specific look and feel but forgot to make a story worthy of it.

Clooney? Blanchett? Really? Script and screenplay are so bad that both actors can only play themselves. Affected cinematography—the high contrast black and white is a poor substitute for good b&w photography. Great potential yielding only an incoherent mess. Sure it looks like film noir but it smells like shit. Not exactly sure what killed this film but Tobey Maguire was at the center of it. Two grown-ups and Tobey who keeps reminding me of a high schooler.

I did not think Tobey McGuires character was all that great in this film. I was not convinced of the type of character he was portraying. The movie follows multiple perspectives. The first one Tobey McGuire, then George Clooney, followed by Cate Blanchett’ A film that tells a story from different perspectives. Interesting idea for a film, yet the "unique style" did not compensate for the boring and fully predictable plot. Perhaps that was also a feature of the fils of that era, in which case Soderbergh nailed it.

Should have been called the useless American. How many times can one guy get put on his ass? How did he get so far in the army? Did he skip basic training? All the characters were generically unlikeable so it was impossible to empathise with their plight. The best bit was Clooneys character telling an annoying prostitute to take a couple of hours off which I interpreted to be an intention at saving other men from her boring and scornful jealous babble. And the less said about Tobey Maguires acting the better. However it wasn't all bad. As the film droned on and by the time it's almost over a strong theme of survival emerges as the motivation for the female lead. Blanchett and Clooney carry the film...clearly! Without them it would've been palpable expletive. Plus the way Steven Soderbergh filmed WAS intriguing.

Il y a tellement de cinéma dans chacun des plans de The Good German (filmé à la manière des années 40, avec les studios, les micros et la lumière artisanale) qu'on peut facilement pardonner à Soderbergh ses baisses de rythme assez fréquentes dans la deuxième partie du film. Le film est si magnifique visuellement qu'on ne s'ennuie pas devant cette histoire de scientifique nazi porté disparu. Si George Clooney et Cate Blanchett sont très bons, Tobey Maguire est absolument génial en tête brûlée raciste et violent. Ajoutez à ça un excellent score de Thomas Newman (pas de surprises ici) et vous avez la définition du style over substance réussi.

I don't consider this a mere homage of "film noir" pictures, but an actual, 20th century one. And although it certainly is not of the caliber of "Casablanca" or "The Maltese Falcon", that doesn't mean its not an entertaining film.
