The Good Thief Reviews
Nolte in top form. Loads of supporting good turns. Marvellous sound track. Unusual French ambience.
A huge letdown from the original. The whole thing seemed rushed and contrived. It's a shame because it could have been much better. RUS.
Slightly better than ‘Confidence’ but not by much
Personally, I enjoyed the film. It had a decent story line, nice cinematography, an occasional partially clad pretty lady, a decent setup of a crime & a twist with an enjoyable ending (which these days is unusual for Hollywood writers, producers, studio execs (& many with low processing brain waves). Michael Clements aka Budman
Horribly written, horrible acting. Everything in this "movie" if you want to call it that - is predictable from the Beginning to end. I wouldn't see this movie if they paid me. Worst case for me is Liam Neeson is the same actor in every movie - including this worthless movie. his character in this movie from every word in the script, the way he conducts himself, the way he speaks just EVERYTHING is ANOTHER taken movie, he only knows how to be one character / the role he played in taken - unfortunately he is not a true actor and cannot get out of that character that's why this movie and all others is taken REGARDLESS of what the movie is
We're both lost souls. An older thief and his band of misfits is planning a robbery in Monte Carlo. He lays the ground work, sets the plan, and goes in for the execution...when it becomes obvious the police know his plan. The thief will have to rally the troops, move on to plan B, and find out how the police found his plan out. "He doesn't want money. He wants what money can buy." "What can money buy?" "Beauty." "You're being mysterious now?" "Beauty is always mysterious." Neil Jordan, director of The Crying Game, End of an Affair, Michael Collins, Breakfast on Pluto, Byzantium, The Brave One, The Miracle, and The Butcher Boys, delivers The Good Thief. The storyline for this picture is just okay with mediocre characters but an above average script. The acting fits the characters well but isn't special. The cast includes Nick Nolte, Tcheky Karyo, Said Taghmaoui, and Emir Kusturica. "You protect the honor of widows and orphans..." I came across this on Netflix and decided to give it a viewing since it was created by the director of The Crying Game. This was just okay, slightly worth following, and doesn't separate itself in the genre. I would only see this if nothing better is available. Grade: C
Like Terry Gilliam before him, I just can't seem to get on Neil Jordan's wavelength, though at least with Jordan there's a spark in there that actually makes his films watchable. But at the same time it just seems like for every good choice there's some other weird, off-putting element that keeps me at a distance. It's always compelling and interesting and well-paced, but then at the same time there's always a Phillipa to make me wonder what the fuck his problem is.
Very good remake of "Bob Le Flambeur" ( but I still prefer the orginal). Nick Nolte plays Bob this timeout, a down and out gambler and retired crool who bites when the "big job" comes his way. He assmbles a team of thieves and they construct a plan to hit the Monte Carlo casino one day before the Grand Prix. His Nemesis, a cop, has a feeling something is going down, but isnt quite sure of what. Neil Jordan does a great job of taking the source material and adding knew life into it, by adding new characters, some subplots and other surprises. I really like how actors like Ralph Fieenes waltzes right in and does a cameo and leaves. Same with the Polish towns. But the original 60's film had it's new-wave style, and nothing can replace that.
ok my 100% attention wasn't focused on this movie its not that i was distracted by any1 its just i had alot on my mind non the less a better movie would of held my focus nick nolte is ok he reminds me of a older gary insane/asylum busey, i wasn't to into it. I really liked the song thats played twice in parts throughout the movie the mans voice and lyrics powerful and different i will find the song and d/l it.
I'll be honest: I only watched this movie because of Said Taghmoui. The story was just so-so for me and I just couldn't take my mind off the bad editing. Every time a scene would end and cut to the next, it would freeze. And not in the artsy way, more like the editors didn't know what they were doing.
"The Good Thief" is an entertaining film that reminded me a lot of another one of Neil Jordan's films, "Mona Lisa." Nick Nolte delivers a strong performance and Jordan's direction is spot-on for most of the time, but the plot is riddled with more holes than John Dillinger's body and the editing style is a bit distracting and inconsistent.
Really glad we bumped into this movie on demand. I love watching Nick Nolte and that gravelly voice seems to go with the European pace of this film. Neil Jordan movies are all worth watching as they usually center around fascinating characters. This one is no different with Bob the thief; bouncing between heroin and throwing money away at the races, taking care of the beautiful Anne while hand cuffing himself to his bed to detox from his drug of choice. Definitely worth looking up on Netflix or on demand and sitting back and letting the french scenery wash over you.
A movie that tried really hard for the "cool" factor, complete with a "cool" french soundtrack. It's a decent watch. It may have been much better with a better lead? I wasn't buying the suave gambler/thief played by Nick Nolte..but that's just me, maybe. I'm not really a fan.
I like films that successfully give actors fish out of water characters. The professional in a foreign land. Here we get a good American in Nice exercise and it brings out the best in Nolte.
I wish we lived in a world like this film where everyone spoke English, but with regional accents to at least make it sound different. Do you know how easier that would make travelling? What we need then is more worldwide cultural hedgemony from America. You can do it, Hollywood!!!
Starring Nutsa Kukhianidze and Nick Nolte, directed by Neil Jordan. It is a remake of a famous 1955 French film Bob le flambeur, by Jean-Pierre Melville. The film, shot in both Monaco and Nice, France follows a heroin addict, and retired thief through the setup and completion of one last job.Ralph Fiennes also appears in the film.Very elegant and interesting movie about a job in a Monte Carlo Casino, but the plot is so intrincate that makes me confuse in the end.But is still a good movie.
