A Good Year Reviews

Mar 4, 2025

My favorite movie of all time, it has low reviews which makes no sense to me. It has an atmosphere to it that I have never come across on any other mover.

A Hollywood 'blockbuster' this is not, however as a P/T resident in the area just south, and a fan of the distinguished (1930s) Provencal author/director Marcel Pagnol, as well as being a Scot, there are many traits, much humour, and character cameos, this remains a very endearing film. Characters, local and ex-pat, are fully recognisable, as with Pagnol decades earlier. The film does reflect how one falls in love with both the terroir, the people, and the culture, if one is open-minded with no expectations other than 'this is Provence', a unique life-style, where values lay in what individuals bring and how they interact: the relationships they form and grow. Peter Mayle, with a long history of the region, is a superb writer and reflects life as an ex-pat with experience, ridiculing no one yet everyone, offering a snap-shot of northern Provence, not as a tourist, but as someone who becomes engaged.

Marion Cottillard, the only reason, I watched it to the end. Russell Crowe was neither believable or funny, the script was lame, and the pace as slow as a French snail. What on earth was Ridley Scott thinking?

My most favourite movie of all.

This is a beautifully produced and nostalgic sojourn into the life of vignerons in Provence. It is full of humour and any British person who spent time in Provence as a child will immediately connect with the film and its themes.

Cracking film , and quite funny at times.

I felt like the characters in this movie could feel the happiness and difficulties that they faced in real life.

I didn't know Ridley Scott had made a RomCom - which was a well-crafted movie that was also quite conventional, though the characterizations were a little more naturalistic than in some films of the same genre.

While I certainly have no problems with directors making a film that's nothing like the rest of the films in their filmography, Ridley Scott's attempt to make something outside of his comfort zone was not one of his better efforts. Maybe it was just him licking his wounds in the aftermath of what happened with Kingdom of Heaven but his attempts to make a romantic comedy - where I found the romance to not be a major element of the film, barely taking up 1/3rd of the movie - missed the mark. Sure, the cinematography's nice, there are a few amusing jokes and Russell Crowe delivers a charming performance (yeah, I'm not one of those people who has it out for Crowe as an actor) but A Good Year is unevenly paced, has rather flat humour, is quite clichéd with Scott seemingly having no idea how to put his own spin on them and Crowe not really having a lot of chemistry with Marion Cotilliard despite neither one acting badly. Also, while the flashback scenes are some of the better moments of the film, I find it silly that Freddie Highmore would grow up to look like Russell Crowe. Yes, ability over appearance, but it still seems to me that he was cast more because of name recognition from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory rather than because he was a suitable candidate. After all, when you see him as an adult in Bates Motel and The Good Doctor, Highmore doesn't exactly come off as the spitting image of Russell Crowe in his Gladiator days, does he? I do kinda miss seeing him in movies, though. Can he and Dakota Fanning appear in a movie together one day? Remembering them from simpler times and seeing them in the same movie would make the film feel like an epic crossover for me. Oh right, I was supposed to talk about A Good Year, wasn't I? It's not remarkably awful and I certainly think this is better than Ridley Scott's unsuccessful attempts to recapture Gladiator vibes again with 2010 Robin Hood and Exodus: Gods and Kings, but man oh man, did this material not suit him at all. It's honestly one of Scott's more boring films actually. Maybe he'll suddenly decide to make another romcom after he finishes that Gladiator sequel with a better script but I can see why he's otherwise been reluctant to make anything that wasn't an epic-scale period piece, a crime drama or a science-fiction film since then. Okay, some of his later films don't quite fit those bills but I think that is the gist of it.

Watch it when it's cold outside and you are feeling a bit blue.

Yeah, critics are often full of it. This film might not be brilliant but it's often funny and is always charming. Ridley Scott's strong point is his visual style and this film is no exception to that. The actors are all very good but it's the scenery that makes the greatest impression.

Simply wonderful. The countryside, the story and the characters provide a special treat.

First off I enjoyed the entire cast of the movie and the British humor and as for the story line I enjoyed it and was able to follow it with no problem, I've watched it more than a few times and it never gets dull.

A love story that crescendos perfectly! A true delight! (Forgive my lips. They find joy in the most unusual places)

Wonderful film! Yes of course there are some technical issues as most of the uber critics explain in great detail. But people should enjoy it for what it is, beautifully shot, humorous and and well acted with a great cast. Fantastic feel good film.
