Such a great and impactful movie, there were super funny moments, and very serious moments, all the actors did so good, and David So was so good!

Exceptional race drama inspired by and definitely superior to American History X.

I don't know why but I found all of the characters lacked authenticity, except the older store owner. Very hard to sympathise with such self-destructive behaviour.

Wow, where to begin here. For a movie about race, it seems white supremacy doesn't even exist. It looks at the most surface level interactions between black people and koreans in LA during the 92 Rodney King riots, but black people/rioters are made out to be the main antagonists. Maybe that's meant to add "depth" but the way it's portrayed in the film is as tone deaf as the film is colorblind. It also borrows heavily from Spike Lee's language, but only in a superficial way, with hardly any of the charm and vivacity that comes across so clearly in Lee's Do the Right Thing. Nothing in this film really seemed organic. The writer, director and lead actor, Justin Chon, wrote with a very heavy hand, with any hints of subtlety ruined by the obviousness of the plot. It's heavily emotional, but with no analysis of race. I finished it but just barely. Very amateurish attempt, pass on this one

This film had been on my watchlist for a long while but I'd been putting off watching it because i knew it would be a heavy watch. Today I finally mustered up the courage. Its a film that follows the relationship between a young black girl and two korean brothers in the setting of mounting racial tensions. There some really sweat heart warming moments but it is not a light watch. Its a film that pulled at my heart strings.

This was a really interesting, insightful, and incendiary movie to watch on a Friday night. We watched on Kanopy and have since vowed to watch no more than one Kanopy flick per week, as they tend to be super heavy and deep. This film was no exception. The acting was exceptional. However, I did NOT like the ending.

Absorbing performances

An impressively fluent narrative accompanied by cinematography so beautiful that I forgot it was even in black and white. The brilliant performances by and chemistry between Justin Chon, David So and Simone Baker were the cherry on top that made me fall in love with this film.

Great directing debut and solid acting. Really touching small film.

Wow this simple movie was intense and deep. It makes you feel really uncomfortable. The acting was on point and the story was good. It was a powerful little black-white movie. Kudos.

Fascinating high quality film surrounding but not including the South Central LA riots of 1992. The movie immediately begins building the characters and one finds themselves drawn into the various life related conflicts between people. The scenes between Kamila and Eli are poignant and display the care that one person can have of another without regard to backgrounds. Generational conflicts, sibling conflicts, racial and socioeconomic status conflicts are explored quite thoroughly without dragging on. Even through all the anger and conflict the movie expresses hope all the way to the very end when the rug gets pulled out from underneath you. A hopeful yet sad commentary on poverty is more important to the movie than the racial divides that exist at the surface. Although not a must see for all, those interested in anthropological and social studies would find this movie right up their alley

It's difficult to sympathize with the plight of the characters when they spend the majority of the film in confrontation, however I'm impressed by the triple effort by Chon.

It didn't have much about the la riot but it was cool it was in black and white which was different but was there sapost to be subtitles because I'm not Korean

Brilliant! Justin Chon!

Mar 14, 2018

Justin Chong manages to capture the poignant racial divide and mistrust in police and government set in 1990's LA after the Rodney King trial, but it's strikes a powerfully eerie picture as to the landscape of our current times.Gook sets brothers Eli and Daniel in Paramount,CA running a failing shoe store in a predominantly African American neighborhood were they are seen as outsiders. Befriended by a young neighborhood girl Kamila, the brothers and the city as a whole witness as the city unravels fallowing the Rodney King verdict. Justin Chong captures the raw angst of a city divided by race, motivated by anger and bigotry in a an unsettling time in America. A cinematic beauty that shows a promising future to Mr. Chong's endeavors.

the movie was a great independent production it still has flaws but this is a a great drama an amazing acting that can stand up to Hollywood movies

A talented and compelling story from Writer/Director/Star Justin Cho, Gook focuses on a microcosm of the 1992 L.A. Riots, with racial tensions at their peak and havoc on the verge of breaking out. The human interactions are what make it work so well, especially in highlighting the irrationalities of racism, prejudice and vendettas. Simone Baker gives an excellent child performance, stuck between 2 families: blood and surrogate. Her life is torn between them, and both are in the process of disintegration, leaving her with seemingly nowhere to go. The documentary style with the shaking cam and the fly-on-the-wall angles adds to the uncomfortable atmosphere being portrayed and always make you feel like a participant, not just a mere observer. The musical score occasionally cuts in when a pensive silence would suit much better, but it announces itself with an unmistakable roar, and I hope it's a sign of great things to come for the creator and the cast.
