Gothika Reviews
Perhaps I'm easily pleased but I found this a good watch. Sitting in the almost dark on my own - maybe a saddo as well? - there was plenty here to keep my interested. The setting was a good backdrop as to what was to come. The film was dark, troubling and reminded me very much of a sanatorium just north of London I once visited in a professional capacity to meet one of the psychiatrists. I will always remember the smell, and the sound of some of the inmates shuffling along the corridors unattended. Halle Berry displayed an amazing range of ability portraying the main character. Penelope Cruz was creepy - a good foil to Berry's character. I thought Charles S. Dutton was miscast as Berry's husband, but they do say opposites attract. I didn't see the plot twist coming - but that probably says more about me than the storyline. All-in-all an enjoyable 100 minutes or so, with a second twist at the very end - intended, I believe, to be followed up in a sequel that was never made. Ps - not one for the kids.
Atrociously bad film! It is inconceivable to me that anyone was paid to write this drivel. I’ve read student project scripts that have more finesse. It is also inconceivable that someone looked at the finished product and said ‘yes, this is an excellent film’. How the director managed to pull horrible performances out of a great cast must be a testament to his lack of skill—except in the case of Halle Berry (who tops my list of the worst actors of all time), I’m sure she was able to give a terrible performance without any help. The one redeeming quality is the atmospheric set design. Pity it wasn’t used in service of a plausible film.
Entertaining, but the wheels kind of fall off at the end. I can't help but think this was maybe a first or second draft of a script. With some simple tweaks, I think it could have been a lot better. That said, Penelope Cruz and Halle Berry do a competent enough job, and Robert Downey Jr. is... Robert Downey Jr.
It's brilliant. It's tough and makes you sick to your stomach of how those poor girls are treated but the intreague is really good keeps you on your toes and very good acting too.
A preposterous supernatural horror thriller.
I fell asleep watching it 😴
Really enjoyed this movie! X
After all the negativity, I was very reluctant to watch Gothika. Was I glad I watched it, finally? 'Glad' is an understatement!! This thriller was like WOW!!! Engrossing, intriguing and suspenseful all the way. Scary too. Great, great ending...what a plot!!! Preposterous? Not at all. Hats off to those who penned the script. Gothika had all the ingredients of a top thriller. Highly recommended.
Ridiculous and incredibly ineffective.
Cheap scares, mystery, action, delusion, sick-ass, and violence are all in the kitchen sink enough to keep you thrilled...
This just didn’t grab my attention the storyline was basic..and boring.. I agree with its ratings
Preposterously driven under pure definition of the sense whilst sporadically overacted, but still meets a chilly acceptance with a thickening mystery, appealing cast and uncommonly conjured subtle spiritual wit. (B-)
I had a feeling I didn't like Halle Barry as an actress before starting this film, on a whim, and as it turns out, my feelings were 100% accurate. This film had awful acting and music, and a very overused story line. It was a waste of an hour and thirty seven minutes, but at least I know now. I am "not alone" in believing this movie was a waste of time and resources.
OMG! The rating on RT is totally off on this one. I have always loved this one. I just had movie night with my girls and Gothika was a 2 (actually 4) thumbs up for all of them. They figured the reason Netflix had it was that a #2 was in the works. Imagine our disappointment in learning that it was hated among critics.
Terrible horrible cringe boring horror movie starring Halle berry and iron man himself. Man I feel bad for both these actors for taking on this role. They probably thought this would change horror films by making them more mainstream but it failed miserably. And it sucks that it failed in my opinion. This movie has a great cast and a huge budget I'm assuming. This movie looks great and it has the great productional ingredients for a good movie. But man that script is the most important part and it sucks. The cast is truly trying to make it unique but the bad script and directing overpowers the acting in a negative manner. Man if this was good there would probably be a lot of other big budget horror movies. Gosh dang it. At least now we got blumhouse. But gosh dang it. Anyway in the end this is a bad horror film. It's shouldn't even be called horror, it's not even scary. I was bored out of my mind. But again in the end I don't recommend this. Watch something else.

Really good watch, could watch again, and can recommend. Halle Berry carries this great Pyschological Thriller of a doctor turned mental patient. This definitely has the production value to support its needs. They do a great job of calling into question whether or not she's crazy at any given time while still presenting the "other worldly" aspects consistently. I even think it holds up (currently) 18 years later as there are technological restrictions in place. Well worth the watch if you like slasher killer detective movies.
This movie really deserves much better reviews. It is a very suspenseful, mystery, horror picture with fine acting. Keeps you guessing. If you haven't checked it out, I would definitely recommend it.
Not great, yet enjoyable. Halle Berry is the star of 'Gothika', but is also joined competently by Robert Downey Jr. and Penélope Cruz; though we don't see much of the latter, unfortunately. The execution of the premise comes out alright, though could've been better of course. There's also a tonne of screaming, most of it unnecessary. As for scares, I can't say it produces in that regard to be honest. It's mainly just the cast that stick out, but I still like the vibe of the film even if it never had me feeling tense or anything close. Thankfully they kept it relatively short at just 98 minutes, even just 10-15 additional minutes would've crippled my feelings towards it. As such, it's passable.
The title perhaps explains the whole atmosphere of the movie - it is full of gothical twists and turns, the central venue itself (the asylum) is dark and foreboding as the halls of a cathedral where assassins lurk behind pulpit and pillars. We know that this movie is not about art, it is about entertainment, it is greatly implausible as narrative but... one sometimes reads horror stories which are true and happen under our noses. I thought it was caricature horror, scared me a couple of times, got me curious about how the plot would develop and thicken and that's what I want from entertainment: not being bored, something to take my mind off routine life.
