Gotti Reviews
This should be an easy type of film to make good. Goodfellas & The Godfather have provided a very clear template for how to do Mob flicks. Which makes it even more egregious how terrible this is. The editing is just flat out terrible. It feels like just episodic events that have no real flow, than there are out of order events to where Gotti is young vs old, than later on it becomes more about his son than him. It just becomes convuluted to follow. Than it feels like it shows you events from his life so you do get a general idea what kind of person Gotti is, but the problem is it never takes those events and forms a cohesive narrative or message arond any of it. It's mind bockling how bad this botches the editing. The music and cinematography isn't good either. The Pitbull numbers, boring generic tracks, the modern numbers don't really fit the time period or make anything interesting . It makes already boring scenes even worse and at best it's forgettable. The cinematography at best is basic uninspired cheap looking stuff and other times it's lifeless, dull, and borderline so dark you can barely see. It also isn't clear how events lead to others at times also. This defintely expects you to know all about not just Gotti but the inner workings of the mob life too. This never explains anything about the mob life like Goodfellas does so anyone could follow it. The acting is just ok and probably the best thing. Travolta should be a pretty good choice but he's just....alright. He's trying but everyone else just isn't given much, doesn't have much chemistry, and besides the generic troubled youth and dysfunctional spouse relationship I struggle to really bring up more than one thing that sets John apart from other mob characters. It does such a poor job telling a story, building a character, immersing you into the lavish crime underworld, that it's kind of fasinating. This 100% deserves another shot with a better director, more production value, and a better narrative. Skip this until that day happens.
It’s obvious that Kevin Connolly is ripping off Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street but just doing an awful job of it. From the breaking the 4th wall to the music to the footage of the actual people. But in the end, it was not executed well and really wasn’t necessary for this film. He did a lot of telling and not showing which is a filmmaking 101 no no. I kept wanting to understand who Gotti was, what his life was really like but it did not go in depth like that. It was just a retelling of his life events, almost like a documentary. Like for instance, Gotti’s wife is barely in the movie, the same with Gotti’s siblings. It would have been good to get a better understanding of how Gotti’s life affected those around him. Barely any character development or depth to the story and that was the problem. Kevin focused too much on the style of the film rather than the film itself. Which is exactly the Entourage plot when they make Medellin. Oh and Kevin cast the director of Medellin, Billy Walsh, in this movie! Haha life imitating art! The editing seemed disjointed and a lot of time the side characters were not integrated enough story wise to understand who they were or their part in the story. I kept thinking who is that guy? Why are they killing him? But then his death wouldn’t even matter much to the plot. Also some of the casting seemed off. Some of the cast just weren’t believable. I think Travolta did a good job but perhaps he could have been great with some juicer, gritty material. The script really wasn’t a story as much as a recounting of his life. It’s a shame because Gotti’s story has all the elements to be a great gangster movie.
People are way too hard on this movie. It doesn't bring anything new to the mafia genre but it's enjoyable. I liked Travolta's portrayal although once in a while you could hear his normal voice show through. But overall pretty good. 3.25 stars.
someone please tell these old duds to stop, just stop, go away and enjoy old age playing golf or driving sports cars along Ventura drive, Hollywood is now run by and for LGTBQ people and OAPs, we need the James Deens and Brandos of life to make films and not these fools, thank god for youtube, kids with smartphones are making better more entertaining viewing than this lot of duffers.
I enjoyed it. I thought Travoltas accent was a little off but I think his acting was great.
0 percent? How hateful do you have to be to denigrate this film so much? It may not be on the same level as The Godfather. But it is worth seeing and for fans of the genre it offers good and solid entertainment. John Travolta is convincing in his role as John Gotti.
This movie is terrible. The acting is atrocious. The music is a joke. Who plays pitbull in a movie rein-acting one of the most famous gangsters in history. Travolta is a JOKE in this movie. Anybody who likes this movie has poor taste in gangster films. The 1996 Gotti movie is impeccable compared to this. The worst was seeing the kid who played Gottis son. Easily one of the worst performances I’ve seen in a gangster film. Everyone was trying way too hard. That’s why this is rated 0% by critics. One of the top 5 worst movies I’ve ever seen and I’ve never been so critical on a movie. When you’re portraying the most famous person in the 1980’s you should take some pride in your role.
TRAVOLTA.
Terrible, the cast in this is absolutely horrible, especially Quack Quack. Same with sledge hammer as Uncle Neil. Armand Asante made this movie right with all the wise guys that are known actors and street guys or wise guys turned actors. John T should stick to giving massages.
My husband and I actually liked this movie and love John Travolta. We love these kind of movies. Don't get why people don't like it. It's good.
Entertaining throughout. A+ performances. Regardless of any other critiques, it's an enjoyable watch on the basis of Travolta's acting alone. Combined with solid storytelling (although the film seems short/rushed and could be split into two or a show for improvement) it's absolutely worth your time and anything under 50% rating is mind-blowing.
I thought it was an okay movie. I wouldn't want to see it again. It's not bad. But it's not great either. I don't recommend seeing this movie.
Unfortunately this is the film that finally got me to leave a review. As much as I like Kevin Connolly this felt like a film made by his Entourage character, Eric Murphy. It felt rushed and over acted especially in the scenes where they were trying to drive home the rules of the mob.
Really the worst Italian mafia movie they just copy the better mafia movie Goodfellas and the director did a terrible job and really disappointed performance for John Travolta he should say no to this project and get a better agents, And the screenplay is so cringe and embarrassment for the real mafia and fans and the fans who are blindsided are really dumb and is so dumb and stupid for the AMC moviepass producers doesn't know producing works and stilling customers money.
Hey Travolta ,maybe don't romanticize the life of a mass murdering sociopath, but if you must ,can we have the story in a linear fashion at least! But all jokes aside, this is the funniest comedy since Troll 2!! Amazing music choices for the soundtrack also, Pitbull and the rest are a perfect fit for an Italian mafia movie🤷🏼♂️
Idk wtf they were thinking when they made GOTTI, however it's as bad as it's reputation says it is. D-
I've always loved stories about real life Mobsters. That is, until I started watching this movie. 30 minutes in and I feel tortured trying to force myself to move forward. This is film is poorly written and produced. 30 minute documentaries have been more interesting. I just can't follow it.
This was just sad for everyone involved. This story was told before and with some dignity. Watch the original Gotti not this trash copy sloppily thrown together for a couple bucks
If you can believe it, I made it as far as the theme to Shaft. Shaft was a good guy, not a goodfella. I'm outta heeeeaar!
Trash absolutely trash the hbo one is the best
