Grand Piano Reviews
The script is rather silly which makes this entire film a poor adventure in viewing and listening to some interesting modern music; moreover, it is also obvious that Wood knows nothing about classical music and likewise the director: A classical concert pianist would not refer to himself as a 'piano player!" Likewise, a formal classical pianist in performance with a symphony orchestra and conductor would have the piano on the same level and very near the conductor and NOT on three levels above the orchestra!! Silly and cheap thrills for the visual and the ugly lighting does not become this film. Having a pop singer singing a spiritual and in a cheap 'pop' manner certainly shows the ignorance of the director, producer and script writer for this poorly conceived and developed film concerning a so-called neurotic concert pianist; however, the portions of the piano concerto by a living composer is excellent and likewise the extremely difficult, Lacinquette, piece is most intriguing. Who is the actual concert pianist not listed in the credits in these performances?
A movie that should never have been made. Have any of those involved ever been to a classical music concert? I've never been to one as cheesy as this. Preposterous script, a poseur of a conductor conducting crap, pretentious music and a plot that beggars belief. And, as for the "wife" who is persuaded to burst into song at the end of the concert, words fail me. A film for morons.
One of the most fun movies i've had in a while. Had few flaws, few plot choices that im not satisfied with, and just mistakes like the last, the hardest song to play on the Piano was not actualy that impressive (im not a pianist so it is just a bad opinion maybe). But overall - i had fun. And this is most important thing while watching a movie. I couldn't turn my eyes away and i had troubles with blinking sometimes. Few design choices make this film great - the score of this movie is played by the orchestra on the stage, so the music is a part of the world and it is really fun if you think about it while watching. I cant forget the transition from the shot of someone's neck being cut to the woman playing cello. I loved it. I loved the vast sea of emotions portrayed by the main actor. I loved the conductor character that was really fun and i loved how they did show the concert, with more fun than you see in most movies. One of few movies where the good guy is actually more fun to watch than the bad guy and i love this movie for that.
With a smart, Classical music-inspired script that only Damien Chazelle could write, beautiful cinematography and impressive piano work from Elijah Wood, Grand Piano is a short, top-notch suspense thriller.
Just wonderful. A timeless masterpiece. Both of them.
Grand Piano is so unabashedly ludicrous it is impossible to take seriously. But if you can accept that, it is fun and different.
The movie is called "Grand Piano." It involves a world class concert pianist playing a very complex piece of music with a symphony orchestra, in front of thousands of spectators. With that in mind, how and why on God's green Earth would the creative staff of this picture choose to have the alleged music in the climactic scene have such fundamental flaws? What poor Elijah Wood went through acting (no, really, you did great, Elijah-- I'm an actor as well as a pianist! Wonderful performance!) is completely and entirely eclipsed by what they got wrong, which is as follows: 1. What Elijah Wood plays does not match what the piano is actually heard to play in the live track. It's not even close. 2. What is actually heard to play in the live track does not match the sheet music on Elijah Wood's piano's desk. It's not even close. 3. The sheet music on Elijah Wood's piano's desk does not match what he appears to be playing visually. IT'S NOT EVEN CLOSE. Honestly, do they think the MILLIONS OF ACTUAL MUSICIANS WHO WATCH THEIR MOVIES just... won't notice? It happens so often that it's refreshing to see when they actually DO get it right. And yes, we ALWAYS notice. The music, the act of creating the music, is very important to us. Please remember that. Two stars, solely for Elijah Wood. Seriously, it would be no stars at all without him.
Highly entertaining and Elijah Wood is excellent in this role. There is some corny moments that happen but all that aside, it's a really solid film. I highly recommend you watch it.
‘Grand Piano' isn't bad, I think it has dedicated tension and performances, but there's too much corniness to let this film get away with. 5.8/10
So disappointing as the movie had potential to be Grand, but, instead it was turned into a dull thriller with many flaws and no back story or character development to make it interesting. Even the piano had a story to tell that never gets unlocked until the very end and leaves you hanging
Lately I found myself defending Damien Chazelle as a writer. Well, maybe I was wrong. This movie is indefensible. Direction, writing, acting, everything is just ugly to watch. How this movie is certified "fresh" is a mistery to me, but if you do not believe me, feel free to waist one hour and a half of your life.
This movie is so much fun! such a thrilling roller coaster.
A very quirky and fun film that doesn't try to take itself seriously. If you're expecting a riveting tale and high art, this movie will probably disappoint you. But if you're in the mood for something ridiculous give this a watch. Something about Elijah Wood's face makes him perfect for this role, he just does anxiety so well. Just note that the premise of this movie is silly, and if you think about it you will find many flaws. But it's shot well and does a good job of standing out within the thriller genre.
A very smart writing effort form the man who would later bring us 'Whiplash', 'Grand Piano' is a reasonably gripping, intriguing premise, executed well enough that most will be able to say they enjoyed it. Touches of Hitchcock aside, not many will consider it remarkable, and on reflection it seems a little absurd....but it does work.
Above average thriller but the 3rd act completely destroys the movie. The 3rd act becomes illogical, lame, boring and overly tedious. Skip this movie for the disappointing ending
The premise (piano player is forced to flawlessly play a ridiculously difficult piece in front of live audience - or get shot) is pretty cool. Of course it also creates a problem for the film: build the tension with lots of music and images, or explain it to pieces. Sadly, it's the latter here. The film is still entertaining and doesn't drag out the premise over more than 80 minutes, but it's also a little silly, at times. When you accept it's little more than a B-movie, you can enjoy it enough, but maybe the idea could have even been something huge, given the right creators.
