Grand Theft Hamlet Reviews
This is brilliant. It really works well, and is engaging, surprisingly moving, and sometimes hilarious.
Very original concept. Hilarious moments.
Its an interesting idea and I respect that people found something like this during COVID but I also don't think this is all that insightful as a feature length movie nor is it as profound as people are pretending it is.
*Grand Theft Hamlet* is such a cool idea—staging *Hamlet* inside *GTA Online* and turning it into a documentary? That’s wild. As a huge *GTA* fan, I respect how much effort went into this. The online world can be unpredictable, so pulling off a full play inside it is impressive. Plus, it’s refreshing to see gaming portrayed positively instead of the usual "games are bad" narrative. I love the contrast—players escaping into a virtual world, building something together, while real life outside is full of isolation and uncertainty. Watching the chaos of *GTA* mix with the chaos of live theater is fun, and seeing the play come together is satisfying. But… that’s kind of all it is. A cool concept, well-executed, but not much more. I really *wanted* to love this, but it didn’t hit as hard as I hoped. Still, respect for the ambition.
A delight. A genuine surprise. I was worried that I wouldn't enjoy the filming as not a massive fan of the game, but what this film does is bring true heart to a time when people's lives had been so badly effected. I laughed, I choked up, it was wonderful. Deserves more plaudits.
A true spectacle. We howled with laughter and we're touched with how earnest some of the players were. I can imagine this being dissected and discussed in film criticism classes for another century. Truly excellent
oh, so now we are just putting youtube videos in the theaters are we?
Honestly delightful. Saw it at IFC and the audience laughed more than any big Hollywood movie I've been to in the last few years.
This was a cute movie. Definitely if your a fan of GTA and Shakespeare then give it a look.
This was a really interesting examination on Video Games and the people who play them. Also just how the world has shifted in a way that our communities are online as much as in person if not more so in some cases. Also watching all the GTA Online footage made me miss the days me and my friends would go on there and mess around. We never did anything as profound as perform Hamlet, however. But as a player I can also appreciate how impressive a feat that actually is. It was also nice to see a spotlight on a different aspect of this game and it’s fanbase. Not every person who plays Grand Theft Auto is some violent degenerate. Not all of us are going on there just to cause grief and chaos. Some of us just want to mess around with our buddies in a huge digital playground. The guys in this movie took this violent and toxic space and were able to bring people together and create art and I think that’s incredibly admirable. A good and interesting watch even if you haven’t played Grand Theft Auto. Actually especially if you haven’t, watch this and see why people you know are playing this game that is primarily known for it’s toxicity and see that’s there’s much more to it.
What I thought would be a quirky lowbrow endeavour turned out to be a surprisingly poignant vignette of life during COVID for those stuck at home.
It's such a bizarre daffy idea. Actors confined by Lockdown decide to stage Hamlet in the video game Grand Theft Auto. It's about their struggle to recruit actors as much as they do against their own despair. It's about people's need for community, creativity, and occasional gunfire. It's also very touching and dramatic which should clash with how silly it all is - but it really works. Hamlet and Laertes shoot at each other for their duel. Someone acts as security while skinned as a neon green alien. But they are utterly sincere - and then someone falls off a blimp. It's insane and emotional and I really loved this ridiculous thing. And if you loved GTH as I did, consider "Staged". It is a British television comedy series with the stars of Good Omens! They are in lockdown too and someone has an idea... Girlfriend Rating: 5 Stars. She LOL, literally, multiple times.
what a heartwarming movie. Hilarious and amazing concept. I hope GTA sponsors them to make more acts like this.
There is nothing redeeming about this movie at all. Shakespeare's brilliance can't help it. Grand Theft Auto's popularity can't either. It's so disjointed, slow-paced and beyond anything I'd remotely call entertaining. I dozed at for several minutes because I just couldn't stay awake. I wish I could rate it with negative stars. A huge waste of my time and money.
Extraordinary. It seems like a gimmick that will wear thin, but it never does. It’s a hilarious, moving, and surprising documentary of art against the odds, friendship, and community.
Revisiting the pandemic is a surprisingly funny setting for a look at the need for socialization and goals
One of the most brilliant and creatively profound movies that I have ever seen! A perfect 10
