Guys and Dolls Reviews

Mar 3, 2025

Sinatra and Brando? Yep, that happened—back in 1955. Guys and Dolls brought the beloved stage musical to the big screen, packed with serious star power. Alongside them, the excellent Jean Simmons and Viviane Blaine round out the "dolls" side of the starring quartet. The musical numbers—aside from the dancing-girl sequences—are memorable and irresistibly fun to sing along with. Naturally, Sinatra is the standout vocalist, but Simmons and Blaine prove to be naturals, and Brando... well, he stays within the comfortable range the songs graciously allow. That said, he delivers one of the film’s best moments with Luck Be a Lady. But for me, Sinatra is the real treat. His short and sweet duet with Blaine, Sue Me, is a personal favorite. Interestingly, Brando plays, Sky Madison, the cool, confident savvy, bible quoting, gambler—the kind of role you’d expect Sinatra to land—while Sinatra instead takes on the part of Nathan Detroit, the nervous, desperate hood with a gambling addiction and a fear of commitment to his long-suffering fiancée, Adelaide. Brando and Simmons (Sarah Brown) may not be as entertaining as watching Sinatra playing the cad, but together they carry the weight of the film's narrative and share a compelling romance between the gambler and the prude with sharp dialogue and playful debates on reality morality and chemistry...yeah chemistry. It’s an excellent musical, a true “roller coaster of emotions,” and a hell—heck (sorry, Sister Sarah)—it’s a heck of a fun time.

The music is a delight. And the story is fun from start to finish with barely any misogyny!(!!!) What more could you ask of a movie from this time period?

Luck be a lady tonight was ringing in the ears of the casting director as they took the biggest swing of their career on casting Marlon Brando opposite Frank Sinatra. I'm not going to say it doesn't work, but that's because I'm feeling polite right now. Check out my longer review: https://youtu.be/LuoM66_cVrk?si=Ef3DBOhJAXWE5m5Q

All I can say is that the trolls who hated Russell Crowe's singing in Les Miserables would've had a field day with Brandon singing "Luck Be a Lady Tonight". Any scene with Stubby Kaye is a plus. Not a bad movie, considering how much Sinatra resented and despised Brando and how displeased and disrespectful Brando felt towards Sinatra's bad attitude.

This classic from the 1950s can truly take us back to a simpler time. Brando and Simmons are excellent and are the best parts of this film. Even though Brando can't really sing well, the acting is enough.

Brando and Simmons are excellent but this is a musical, ergo it’s rubbish. Watched on SKY Cinema.

This is one of my all-time favorite musicals. I hope younger generations will enjoy this movie as well.

Sinatra is boring but Brando isn't (a truly surprising thing to see in a musical) and while some of the cuts to the original stage show are vexing, overall it keeps the spirit and style intact. We should be very grateful Kidd's fantastic choreography got to stay in.

I had been meaning to watch this movie for a few years. I wasn't familiar with the stage version and went in not knowing much aside from "Luck be a Lady Tonight". I was expecting to see big production numbers and for some reason I thought the setting would be Las Vegas, due to the gambling theme. I was surprised the movie takes place in NYC, and many of the musical numbers were smaller in scale. Still, it's a classic, Golden Age musical and you can't go wrong with Golden Age musicals or westerns imo. Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando are icons that I enjoy watching. Like another reviewer I was surprised it wasn't Frank singing "Luck" and I also felt that number should've been a bigger production number. A little disappointed it wasn't. Nevertheless, the opening sequence, the part in Havana and the dancing/gambling in the sewers were impressive.

Not the best singing performances - which isn't great for a musical - and not the best acting all around... but it's fun & pretty. Way too long though.

It's true that Guys and Dolls is a classic, with golden-era Hollywood names like Jean Simmons, Marlon Brando, and Frank Sinatra. While we can look back on Guys and Dolls as a timepiece work of art, modern audiences will find the film's comedic moments to be dull and the plot too dragged out. Contemporary stage versions typically provide a more lively, witty amount of energy though no one can beat Brando's classic charm and devilish features. Lovers of musical theatre should give Guys and Dolls at least one watch to appreciate its old-fashioned fun.

The musical's subject is love and it is displayed in the relationships between the two couples: Sky and Sarah, and Nathan and Adelaide. Both Sky and Nathan are chronic gamblers and are unable to commit to relationships — with Sky in particular having a disposable disposition toward women. Although his initial advancements on Sarah are only because of a bet, he soon learns the value of companionship and quite frankly, the beauty of love. It makes the unlikely couple of Sarah (a devoted missionary) and Sky (a devoted gambler and bachelor) dynamic, multi-faceted, and deeply heartfelt.

Paul Rudd was not in this movie

Although this musical wasn't for me, and I didn't enjoy it that much, I can't deny its impact on musicals, and although I wouldn't say I liked it, there were a few moments that were fun to watch. WAY TOO LONG THO!!!!

A musical that I never had got around to see/watch, partly due to the title. The set, choreography, and the costumes were enjoyable, the story not for me. It was fun and colourful; however some things are a bit outdated / problematic to me (the whole, lying to girlfriend about not gambling anymore, ordering drinks for a non drinker & letting a girl drink to a point where she is rather drunk). All in all, ok to pass the time, (keep in mind when it was created) I did not see a point to the story. Resolution of the story is….. couples get married and I hope lived happily ever after, the end.

Extremely boring with some of the phoniest acting I've ever been subjected to. The song and dance numbers are equally nauseating.

So let me get this straight, Luck be a Lady and Frank Sinatra are both in this film, but somehow Sinatra doesn't sing it? There are two glaring issues with adaptations of big Broadway musicals from this period - they're too long, and the choreography doesn't always match the tone. Like in West Side Story, which focuses on ethnic rivalries and adolesence on the New York streets, you've got violent turf wars expressed through synchronized graceful leaping; it's a natural component of theater but doesn't necessarily translate to film. Here, that's not nearly as much of a problem given how sparingly it's used, first as a glorious setup to the streets of New York City, and then, far later after the memory has faded, you're treated to a crazily impossible gambling scene in the sewers, as dozens of degenerates in neon suits frolic through exaggerated dice throws. It totally doesn't match the tone of the act itself, but it's so unexpected and grand that you won't care. Many of the songs are great, but both the lyrics and the singers are a mixed bag - Brando is a decent vocalist, but he's no Sinatra. Simmons and Blaine are both entertaining, but the former shows a more complete acting ability and is a treat to watch in her transformation from sheltered to starry-eyed. However, a big problem that remains is the runtime. They actually commissioned MORE songs for this version compared to the theatrical musical, and left plenty of dialogue in scenes that seems excessive. There is plenty of opportunity for watch-checking. When Guys and Dolls is good, it's really good, but there's plenty of interstitial space. (3/5)

The 2nd-funniest musical ever, due to the songs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll not try to paraphrase all of the wonderful opinions that have already been expressed by so many. To me, the jewel set in the midst of this setting is the story of Sky Masterson and Sister Sarah Brown falling in love. There is to me a touching sweetness to the mutual attraction and developing love witnessed in that aspect to the film. I've returned many times to watch the scenes and songs they shared. Of course, the title song performed by Nathan, Nicely Nice and Bennie is perfect and I've watched that over and over, as well. When I was growing up in Birmingham, AL there was a daily talk show on one of the local networks called "The Tom York Show". Its theme song was an instrumental version of "Guys and Dolls". It is a very catchy tune but I did not know it was the title song of "Guys and Dolls" until years later when I watched the film for the first time on TCM.
