Hateship Loveship Reviews
Interesting flick. Even though Kristen Wiig is in it, it's not a comedy. So don't expect one, and you probably won't be disappointed like some of the reviewers here. I liked Kristen Wiig, but I liked Guy Pierce the best; however a lot of the acting is "soft played." Facial expressions somtimes said more than words would. I enjoyed this film. It always seems, however, that when a reviewer is expecting too much from a movie, they end up being dissapointed. I didn't expect too much, but TMC (Premium Cable) gave it 3 out of 4 stars so I figured it was worth watching. It was. This is probably why I no longer go to a movie theater. Why waste your money paying to see a film when it eventually comes to HBO, STARZ, ENCORE, FLIX, TMC, or CINEMAX. That's what Premium Cable is for. You don't waste your time in a movie theater watching something that you're not necessarily in the mood for -- or you were expecting something entirely different. Movie theaters are really for the big blockbuster films that need the giant screen, big surround sound, and incredible visuals. Hateship Loveship isn't that kind of movie.
This was such an engaging movie with good acting and storyline. Kristen With was superb in this. It's definitely worth the watch.
I just streamed this 2015 movie despite the low audience and critics' ratings - and I'm so glad I did. It's a quiet, thought-provoking little film with excellent acting, pacing, and direction. Although the plot is simple, I found the film compelling and satisfying.
I just found it all really nasty,
Wiig is so good at making you feel uncomfortable for her character, which is the crux of Hateship Loveship. When she naively falls in love via email with a bad-boy deserter of a father, she takes her cleaning skills to him.
How did this get bad reviews wtf!?! Kristin wigg was phenomenal and the story was pretty sad/touching 3.6
Slow paced but terrific performances and wonderfully minimalist dialogue that mostly allows the actors to live inside each scene. Very enjoyable. Wiig is terrific and carries most of the film.
a relationship confused to the core.. Hateship Loveship There are few moments installed in here so perfectly that it becomes almost impossible to not be moved by it. Addition to that, the chemistry among the characters is what withholds the audience to it as it controls the energy of the cinema. The adapted screenplay by Mike Poirier is the real culprit in here as it is loosely placed in different interval or period of time that the audience sweats through the whole process on adjusting the timeline or tone of it. The script is gripping but not as smart as the writer thinks and neither is edited accordingly; it lacks better supervision. Liza Johnson; the director, is the key that unlocks this mystery with her brilliant execution skills that is not only supported but celebrated by an amazing cinematography; it is visually rich. Kirsten Wiig is a revelation in here as she pours out emotions like a rain on screen and is soothing and impactful throughout the course of it where she is supported decently by Guy Pearce and Jennifer Jason Leigh who although doesn't get that much screen time. Hateship Loveship is a relationship confused to the core whose structure is so eerie and convoluted that the audience fails to accept or adjust with it.
I love Kristen Wiig and she is very versatile. However, this movie really gets Borderline Personality Disorder wrong and as a result does a disservice to those who suffer from mental illness.
I liked much more than the scores it got. The story is a bit messy but the lead character is different than most in the genre and the fact Kristen Wiig is so great at playing this odd character just elevates what probably could have been a really bad movie. She is the main reason to watch.
Things look depressing, and everybody is weird in his/her own way. But by the time the movie ends, I got to like every character and found myself smiling. A quiet, heart-warming gem!
Not bad, bit of a chick flick. Light and easy story. Interesting story. Good characters and performances.
Exceptional film. Kristen is spectacular in this role. I find the movies she does are not only funny, but do have some really sincere, meaningful moments taught through that humour, much like Woody Allen films. There aren't as many comedies that can succeed like this. This stayed more on the serious side than comedic anyway, but I just loved this film.
modest and toned down drama with good performances butt a story that is hard to be believed at least in the way it was told.
I enjoyed this gentle film about a teenager's cruel prank that brings two people and a family together. Kristen Wiig is outstanding as a quiet woman who reforms a troubled and aimless father and offers support to his daughter to mend a broken relationship. Nice, pleasant to watch flick.
Johanna Parry (Kristen Wiig) moves to a new town to work as a housekeeper for Mr. McCauley (Nick Nolte), an elderly man who needs help keeping house, and to be a caretaker for McCauley's granddaughter, Sabitha (Hailee Steinfeld). She meets Sabitha's father and McCauley's son-in-law, Ken (Guy Pearce), who does not live with Sabitha or McCauley, but instead resides in Chicago. Sabitha's best friend, Edith (Sami Gayle), tells Johanna that Ken's wife died several years ago. After inviting Johanna and Sabitha to dinner, Ken writes a friendly note to Johanna, which his daughter delivers. Johanna writes a response letter and Sabitha's friend Edith offers to take it to the post office and mail it. Instead, she intercepts the letter and as a cruel joke, the two teenagers forge a love note from Ken, addressed to Johanna. Then they set up a fake email account for Ken. They impersonate him, responding to love emails from Johanna. "Ken" calls her "my only friend". But trust must be evaluated when "Ken" asks Johanna to visit him in Chicago, and she finds out the truth about the man she has fallen in love with... "Hateship Loveship" is a slowpaced film and somewhat focused on more or less unlikable characters. We are used to see Kristen Wiig in comic shapes and characters while in "Hateship Loveship" she is low key, domesticated, quiet and frustratingly "meaningless" as Johanna, even if she carries a strong will. She tries to show her versatility as an actress here, but she is simply better at comedy than drama in my point of view as she ends up just "staring" at herself in an attempt to be dramatic. Guy Pierce plays an unlikable character, but is solid in his performance and so is veteran actor Nick Nolte. Hailee Steinfeld and the cute Sami Gayle delivers solid performances as Sabitha and Edith. The red thread is that love can attract very different people to each other. Forgiveness is another topic in the film and always try to expect the best in other people without judging them for their actions. "Hateship Loveship" is ok, but doesn´t reach any indie heights in my book.
