Heartburn Reviews
My opinion is very different from most I guess. I love this movie. Very relatable. Good story, heartfelt, & of course, the acting is phenomenal.
A good old fashion film. Pretty straight forward in the messaging and I'm sure a significant amount of marriages have seen this same story in theirs.
A far more subtle comedy than it was given credit for. The performances across the board as great and Nichols observes such small moments with great care (i.e. when two supporting characters become aware of Nicholson's infidelity due to a single line of dialogue).
Pretty disappointing for such a great cast. Depressing but not in a deep or thoughtful way, and the ending is particularly underwhelming with the child's nursery song supposed to pull everything together.
Terrible. Just terrible
An adaptation of Nora Ephron's own novel, which was semi-autobiographical, Heartburn is a 1986 romantic dramedy about a relationship turning sour after the husband is suspected of having an affair. When Rachel (Meryl Streep) meets political columnist Mark (Jack Nicholson) at a friend's wedding, they click instantly and it's not long before they begin a relationship. Soon after, they themselves get married and buy a house together, though the latter needs a lot of work. They eventually have a child but things quickly deteriorate when Rachel finds out that Mark has been cheating on her. Heartburn is every bit as sharp and witty as you'd expect a Nora Ephron-penned script to be, the film aptly showing the ups and downs of a relationship that, very much like the house Rachel and Mark purchase, needed a lot of work from the start. Despite Jack Nicholson having to replace the original lead actor a day into the film's shoot, Mike Nichols' direction is seamless and the film never drops the ball. Meryl Streep is reliably excellent as Rachel, getting the bulk of the emotional work here and nailing it, while Jack Nicholson is unfortunately not always convincing when it comes to the sweeter moments between Mark and Rachel but he certainly makes sure that the pie-in-the-face scene feels earned, though seeing more clashes between the two of them could have helped sell it even more. Not showing any of Mark's work life makes him a particularly frustrating character and this was a smart move as it helps put you in Rachel's suspicious and anxious frame of mind. The supporting cast, which includes Catherine O'Hara, Jeff Daniels and Stockard Channing, is solid and look out for a young Kevin Spacey in his first movie role. It may not be as upbeat as the likes of When Harry Met Sally but Heartburn hits the right notes and it's worth seeing for the talent involved alone. From the writing to the performances, this is a well crafted film that deserves a second look, even if it could have been even punchier. Quite good.
An average movie about an average marriage where nothing exciting ever happens.
The acting is good but there is nothing else to like.
The cast is amazing- Meryl Street, Jack Nicolson, Jeff Daniels; Nora Ephron is amazing, Mike Nichols is amazing. It is such a funny, sad poignant movie about everyday life.
I think I wanted to watch this because I read somewhere that it is based on Nora Ephron's marriage to Carl Bernstein. I didn't think it was that great.
I had been wanting to watch this film for a while since the Carly Simon song often gets stuck in my head. Sat down to watch it today and despite all the talent involved it was hollow, incomplete and a disappointment. It said nothing and left me with nothing. :*( "Fix the toaster..."
I hope that Ms. Ephron and Mr. Bernstein were more interesting and clever persons in their reality! The two characters are stupid at least. Mr. Nichols could have done much better with two talented actors like Streep & Nicholson. That movie is definitely BORING also because everything is more than predictable. Otherwise is everyone's Life so predictable ?!
A far more subtle comedy than it was given credit for. The performances across the board as great and Nichols observes such small moments with great care (i.e. when two supporting characters become aware of Nicholson's infidelity due to a single line of dialogue).
Some laughs and realistic relationships. Loved seeing Meryl Streep's daughter play her daughter as a 20-month-old!
Should have been much better.
Great acting by Meryl Streep in this movie. The story was engrossing and her character was very empathetic. Still very relatable holds up well in 2020. Enjoyed the use of Carly Simon's Coming Around Again, throughout the movie.
I don't know I liked this movie enough to watch again, it was entertaining. The only thing that drove me nuts about it was the Carly Simon song that played more than once. That's the kind of song that gets stuck in your head, and not in a good way. Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep made a convincing married couple with common problems. I just wouldn't marry someone who has a track record for cheating on women. It seems like even when you try to make Jack an honest man, he can't seem to stay committed. Fact, the little girl that plays Jack and Meryl's daughter in the movie, is actually Meryl's daughter in real life... Mamie Gummer.
Some sort of self-serving, non-plot waste of celluloid. Hard to believe Nichols directed it or that Jack took the role (the two reasons I elected to stream it--for free, luckily). This is mostly for Streep fans who'll fawn over any of her sighs, pouts or vacuous exasperations. Nothing to even giggle at, no real drama--just a bunch of mushy marginal melodrama. It doesn't even have an ending unless you count the credits rolling!
I have loved this movie for decades now. It's Jack and Meryl (and a stellar cast in general) at their very best and I love watching them play off of each other, and they fact that they're playing real people and a true story makes it even more enjoyable. It doesn't have an ending that many would choose, but sometimes that's just real life! It's a dramedy at its finest and there are so ironic and nuanced moments and one-liners. It's a shame that more critics and movie goers didn't appreciate this movie for the masterpiece that it is.
