Heartless Reviews
[W]ith its intelligent, gripping story, brilliant performances and assured direction, it's one of the best British films you'll see this year.
| Original Score: 5/5 | Oct 28, 2019
Aside from performances, most of Heartless's faults could be explained away by its storyline but that doesn't make it any more entertaining in the moment. Still, it's an intriguing watch for fans of the genre.

Ridley lets the darkness permeate the space and filter into his characters, who are unable to prevent their own hearts from being eaten alive.

While ambitious, 'Heartless' derails in a big way, stacking the deck with weird moments intended to give it some kind of cult status, without considering that films specifically designed to be "cult" are rarely the ones that actually are.

Earns points for combining two sub-genres (revenge and occult) into one surprisingly original tale of violence and redemption.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Jan 9, 2011
A highly imaginative if often darkly disturbing work that even at its most seemingly outlandish remains intriguing and involving.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Dec 9, 2010
Heartless isn't as dazzling as The Reflecting Skin but it's nice to hear from Ridley again after all these years.
| Original Score: 5/10 | Dec 3, 2010
"Heartless" is a bit of a jumble, especially in its last third. But it's got a distinct tone, contrasting romance and even outright sentimentality with urban dread and a few nasty visuals.
| Original Score: B- | Dec 2, 2010
Heartless is nothing if not imaginative. It's a visually bizarre update of the deal-with-the-devil "Faust" legend, with a range of amazing, hilarious, terrifying, and romantic images bashing up against one another in an eerily natural way.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 19, 2010
"Heartless" is an uneasy mixture of B-movie shocks, social commentary and sentimentality that shows a potent imagination at work.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Nov 19, 2010
It doesn't go anywhere special or much of anywhere, though it goes there in appreciably icky style.

moralistic filmmaking so wrong-headed as to become mean-spirited

A moody, portentous tale of demons running amok on the streets of London.
| Original Score: B- | Nov 18, 2010
A shy, scarred photographer suspects that demons are behind the apparently senseless violence wracking his rundown London neighborhood in this ambitious horror-art movie hybrid.
| Nov 18, 2010
It's a wicked film with convincing nightmarish imagery, but there's no story here to cling to, making this abyss of torment rather easy to disregard.
| Original Score: C- | Nov 18, 2010
A wide variety of concepts to explore and while they're all worthy of our time, it's just impossible to do them all justice in a 114-minute film.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 16, 2010
With erratic success, Heartless tries a number of different veins.. but it's on firmest footing as a macabre comedy.
| Nov 16, 2010
Heartless is as witless as its protagonist, whose willingness to make a pact with Satan is so knuckleheaded that his subsequent torment feels deserved.
| Original Score: 1/4 | Nov 12, 2010
There's more mood than matter here, but suspenseful atmospherics effectively distract from minor plot holes.

Writer/director Philip Ridley has created a visionary world where beauty falls way to a Kingdom of Hell that strongly suggests the work of British horror author Clive Barker.
