Hello, Dolly! Reviews
A very fun movie and worth a watch and listen. Update: Even better with a second watch.
My 15 yr old just wanted to watch this. She's into theatre for her high school and loves all things Broadway. I will admit, it was much better than I had hoped going in. Very good way to spend a couple of hours. Didn't really know much going in. One pleasant surprise was to 'discover' this was the film that Wall-E is so fascinated with in that Pixar film. Took me almost until the end to figure that out.
Wow I love this one, Mrs. Streisand singing is like silk for my ears, just amazing. Hard not to think now about Wall-E. If there’s something wrong with this movie it’s the length nothing else.
For a movie made in the 60's, this aged well. The songs are catchy. The acting is funny.
Its almost universally hated for some reason as if making a big, goofy, fun musical was a crime/too old fashioned in 1969 (seriously, had it been released one year earlier I doubt it would have this reputation). Streisand's just so charming in this.
I never could understand why there were so many negative reviews. Yes, Streisand was young for the part but she did her part really well. Kelly made a huge musical and it was the last of its kind. I enjoyed it in the theaters when it came out and I still enjoy it. If you like big musicals you will enjoy it.
Critics are factually incorrect about this one I love watching Barbra Streisand gaslight a rich man into marrying her it's fabulous. Also that one song makes me think about Wall-e and makes me weep by association alone
This to me is the greatest live-action musical I have ever watched! I have seen this movie over two hundred times, I know every word to every song, The Costume design is fucking unbelievably amazing! Barbra Streisand was so beautiful to me in that movie, her voice was just illustrious, soothing, and just delightful! All of the other cast including Michael Crawford were just amazing!! I'm extremely critical of every movie I watch, but this movie was just phenomenal from beginning to end. All of the songs are memorable, fun, engaging. On random days in my life I just seen before the parade passes by, because it's such a philosophically resonant story to life. More than anything else... The movie is just fun!!! The next great musical for me is Aladdin...! Because the songs were so amazing. But Hello Dolly, with Louis Armstrong, Walter Matthau, Barbra Streisand... Directed by Jean fucking Kelly!??? For Live Action musicals it just cannot be beat!!!
Well there Dolly your movie's pretty Okay then Dolly
Believe me I'm not trying to be negative here but I think this is one of the biggest movie disasters of all time. This film killed movie musicals until "Moulin Rouge" and "Chicago" took the bad taste out of the world's mouth. And as such it's enjoyable as rubbernecking any train wreck can be. The picture is totally miscast in EVERY role. The level of acting is at that of an average high school play. Rent this film just to experience the horror of Michael Crawford's performance. What was he thinking? Is he trying to act retarded? This is truly one of the most embarrassing performances of all time. I'm surprised he ever worked again. Sure Bab's has a great voice but being in her twenties destroys the whole plot of being middle aged and this is her last chance at a husband. And sorry, life achievement award or not, she can't act. See this one for the HORROR ...and the unintentional laughs.
If you want 2 1/2 hours of fun, joy, and pure wackiness, Hello, Dolly! is for you. It has some of the best songs I've ever heard in a musical. Those segments might go on for a bit too long but nonetheless it will have you feeling good throughout. Underrated movie!
The funniest musical, because it stars Barbra Streisand and Louis Armstrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well Hello, Dolly! It's been a long time since I've seen this musical. It was fun to revisit it. The dialogue is quick and witty, it features remarkable choreography, and the songs are enjoyable. The story is a bit lacking, however, and fairly repetitive. This would have been a stronger movie had it been a little shorter. Still, it's nice to watch this whimsical film every now and then.
A miscast version of a forgettable show.
