Hereafter Reviews
At 1st the film started strong but as it progressed it just became boring. I was expecting more mystery more substance. I've never watched a paranormal film where the film strays away so much from the genre.
Hereafter is one of the most moving and sensitive films I’ve ever seen. With its delicate approach to life, death, and human connections, it captures the complexity of dealing with grief or the loss of someone in such a genuine, human way that it’s impossible not to feel deeply. For anyone going through that process, the film can be even more impactful, as it touches on profound questions about what happens afterward and how we cope with the absence of loved ones. The film carries a strong emotional weight, but one of the scenes that struck me the most is the one with Matt Damon having dinner. It’s a moment of pure subtlety and sensitivity, with no unnecessary words. In that scene, we see loneliness as a silent yet overwhelming presence. The way it's crafted—without forcing anything, but with all the emotional depth conveyed through the acting and direction—makes it one of the finest scenes I’ve seen in cinema. It's a film that often flies under the radar, but it’s truly a masterpiece for anyone who appreciates introspective, sensitive storytelling. Hereafter is definitely one of my all-time favourite films, and I believe it’s incredibly underrated. It’s not just a simple drama about death; it’s about life, the small moments, and deep human emotions. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it. It might be a bit slower for those looking for something more fast-paced, but for anyone seeking something that touches the soul, it’s absolutely essential.
The bad reviews kept me away from this movie for a long time. But it always piqued my interest so I checked it out finally. I really liked it. Matt Damon is so sensitive & vulnerable in this. The boy's story tugged at my heartstrings. The french woman's story was also interesting (though I'll admit I got tired of reading the subtitles during her storyline). Maybe a little too long. But, I think it had to be. All the bad reviews from critics & audience were insulting, I think, to all involved in the making of this film. It's not something I may watch again...but overall...I thought it was good.
An underrated masterpiece.
Touching, thought provoking, and romantic. The subject is something everyone can relate to, even if you are not a believer. Matt Damon does a convincing job, and Bryce Dallas Howard was very believable in her role.
This was a beautiful little movie...nothing fancy, but so touching. I loved the way the characters came together and how their stories, though tragic and sad, actually made you feel hopeful. It gave answers to unanswerable questions, and the best part was the beautiful music that scored the entire piece...all written by Clint Eastwood. I would definitely recommend.
Really loved this movie. Three separate stories of touching the hereafter that all come together at the end. A spectacular tsunami scene. A poignant child losing his twin brother senselessly. And a clairvoyant with the curse of his skill making relationships with other people often impossible. I thought it was incredibly well done and the acting was fabulous. Bravo!!
It's a good movie about a subject most people are uncomfortable with, the afterlife. Well written and well acted. Clint Eastwood did a great job directing.
Look I love Clint Eastwood as a director and actor, but this film is way too long that offers no surprises about three people with three different storylines all meeting each other too give us a confusion that we see a tens of miles away.
'trying' to watch this right now because i've seen almost everything on t.v. and 1 star off because mat damon smacks when he eats and the movie and his acting is horrible
What a total let-down. Matt Damon, directed by Clint Eastwood. Has to be good, right? No. It was a turkey. An underdone turkey. How do you screw-up such a pairing. I found myself laughing it was sooooooo baaaad. Utterly cack-handed. That's one Sunday afternoon I'll never get back. Please....give ticket money to the Salvation Army. Donate it to the One-Legged Retired Yak-herders Association of Outer-Mongolia. Worst case-scenario, give it to the campaign to get Tronald Dump reelected.. Just don't - for the sake of all that's holy - spend on a ticket to watch this total pile of doo doo. (Mother of God). I'm off to douse my head in some iced-water.
Very engaging. The character development is excellent, and the special effects add restrained excitement. I found the sections of French dialogue irritating though, as I struggled to keep up with the subtitles, The film ended unexpectedly for me, without reaching a satisfying conclusion, but overall I enjoyed it.
In my top 50 films of all time
This is quite an emotional watch at times, although its not your average out and out 'weepy'. It follows numerous people, from a French lady to a young boy in London, who have issues to do with death following recent events. Its quite thought provoking and I found it very intriguing seeing things from the different characters perspectives and I certainly found myself feeling sorry for most of them, for different reasons (I won't elaborate so as not to provide spoilers). I suppose, to some extent, the main themes (death, or mortality, aside) it covers include loss, disappointment and curiosity of/about the unknown. I admit the whole subject area of death is something that intrigues me - I've wondered about what may, or may not, happen after you die since I was young, so this films plot appealed to me as soon as I came across it and it didn't disappoint me as the theme is sensitively handled. I was particularly interested in George (Matt Damons character), his perspective on things. I would definitely recommend this film if it sounds of interest to you, yes. Also, just to add, some of the film is subtitled, due to one of the stories focussing on a lady in France, so if you don't understand French then the subtitles may or may not be an issue but it didn't bother me too much, as I watch a fair bit of world cinema anyway.
Bit of a disappointment, to be honest. 'Hereafter' spends the majority of the 2hr (or so) run time building up the intrigue, but then proceeds to do hardly anything with it. As the credits rolled, I felt like I wanted more from this 2010 release. The three stories take too long to connect, even if each one is actually quite interesting. I like the performances of Matt Damon and Cécile de France, while youngsters Frankie and George McLaren do well. Bryce Dallas Howard is also involved, she and Damon have good chemistry - it's not quite Damon and Emily Blunt in the phenomenal 'The Adjustment Bureau', a film that in fact caused a production delay for this film, but they come across nicely together onscreen. I also recognised George Costigan ('Line of Duty') and Mathew Baynton ('You, Me and the Apocalypse'). For how long it takes to connect and how little satisfaction the end product gives, I can't help but feel disappointed with this flick from Clint Eastwood; who worked alongside 'The Crown' creator Peter Morgan, interestingly.
It's a fascinating premise, but it's a painfully dull execution. It drags on way too long and all the jumping between stories leaves you disoriented and uninterested.
The film starts with three random stories from the different parts of the world. They were directly connected to death. Slowly and steadily, and obviously they are destined to meet together. Film was slow and steady, like other Eastwood films. But, the problem was the three random stories scattered around and wandering aimlessly affected the viewing experience of the audience. Very predictable from the beginning, yet a lot of questions left unanswered.
A great story line. Deals with a question many believe in and an increasing number fear. It pulled at emotions well. Got a little slow in the middle (cooking.....really? Is there anything more boring?). But overall made me want to stay on the journey to the outcome.
