Switchblade Romance Reviews

Apr 21, 2025

Firstly this film seems to have about 3 different titles. Not that’s an issue but if you haven’t seen the film the title ‘switchblade romance’ will probably ruin the twist unlike, the original French title ‘Haute tension’. That aside, this was another French brutalist horror on the Amazon prime list for me. ‘Frontiers’ being the best so far. HT was pretty good … but nothing amazing. Like other reviews … the twist near the end might ruin it for some. It’s worth a watch but nothing amazing.

This film is a shock to the senses, there's no doubt about that. I feel as though it captures realistic horror elements much better than its counterparts. In fact, it is one of the most realistically-portrayed shock-horror films I have seen to date, which makes it stand out to me. Sure, there are pretty sizable plot holes. But the raw emotion that you will feel from its acting and brutal imagery makes this film a verisimilitude of an eerie, murderous sadistic rampage. The far-fetched ending, to me, is a fun mental journey! High Tension doesn't disappoint, and lives up to its name.

O que tem de melhor é a atuação de Cecile de France. O roteiro descamba para a incoerência, que nem vou poder citar sem dar spoilers. É um absurdo. Pior é que nem direção nem equipe viram tamanha furada que estavam gravando.

Absolutely love this film

La premisa es buena, va por buen camino la historia, luego llega a un momento en el que aburre pero de allí tiene un giro de trama qué te hace decir, ay cabron!

I know the film as HIGH TENSION. In my opinion, the film is the most exciting film of the last 40...50 years. From about minute 25 onwards, it's just high tension. Unbelievable. The excessive depiction of violence was also a clear non plus ultra at the time. HIGH TENSION ushered in the "French terror horror wave". In my opinion, the film is the best terror shocker of all time. Some people write that the film is pointless and has logical holes. If so, these people simply don't understand the film. Basically, you just have to remember the FIRST SCENE in the film..."OK, record everything". At the beginning of the film, she tells HER story. From the gas station (surveillance video) onwards, the TRUE story is told, that it wasn't him but SHE who was the killer. This was perfectly evident in one scene...in the gas station. When the psycho puts on his sunglasses. At that moment, if you press pause and zoom in, you can see Marie through the lens of his sunglasses. From that point on, you know who the killer was...if you recognize this Easter egg. The film is psychologically portrayed absolutely perfectly. Ultimately, it was a murder out of love, which was not reciprocated...scene on the street..."Do you love me...huh?" "You don't love me...". Simply brilliantly portrayed. The perfect thriller!

It's rough around the edges, but it is a ripping good time.

Cool story. I did not catch on until the store video surveillance footage was shown. I was still confused as to how it must have looked to the victim, but it worked.

I love Alexandre Aja's filmography, but this film is disgustingly vicious for no good reason, and the ending is simply one of the worst endings of all time. If you're in the mood to just be shocked, you can find better films.

While it does have some intense moments, the ending completely ruins it and makes the whole thing confusing.

A great movie... until it isn't. The third act plot twist is unnecessary, it's stupid, and it's incredibly offensive. A shame; everything up to that point is a horror fan's dream.

Look, there's a competent, if by-the-numbers slasher here, at least on paper. Closeted lesbian Marie goes to her friend Alex's secluded country house to study, masturbates while listening to Runaway Girl (which is better than the heavy use of Muse later on, but not by much), then watches Alex get kidnapped as her entire family is murdered. The rather predictable twist is, of course, that Marie is the serial killer, who just wants Alex to herself. Directed by someone who cared about continuity or competency, this twist might work, even with Marie following the serial killer's truck in a different car, or killing the serial killer before going to free Alex. Instead, the serial killer is introduced early on in a scene in which he orally copulates with a severed head, Marie dreams the climax of the film down to the scared cigarette-smoking Frenchman in the car, and after the reveal we continue to swap between Marie and the serial killer in a way that kills the tension and makes for a distracting rather than disturbing finale.

I have seen my fair share of horror movies, from David Lynch to Blumhouse productions. I have seen a LOT, and let me just say. This movie is better than 99.9% of the popular horror movies of today. Like IT and The Nun and all of these, boring, big movies are absolutely nothing compared to this! It's the best thriller/ psychological horror movie I've seen... It has a huge plot, that literally no one expected... I honestly don't get why some ppl hate this movie so much, when it is a masterpiece. Altho I will have to say, the music could have been better in quite a few parts of the movie, because most of the music was just the most "generic annoying eerie sound.mp3" and in some part the music was either pretty quite or almost even absent! But yeah, that's my take on the movie.

High Tension is a masterpiece of suspense, thrills and unforseen plot twists. While some may say there are plot holes in this movie, I personally find that these are their failed attempts to see those moments as memories of what the killer has done to their past victims, not moments that are happening in reality at the same moment as another moment of reality. In this way, I find that this movie is a beautiful kaleidoscope puzzle, whereas the more you watch it, the more you see how much planning and detail the killer went through and how aware this person was of every part of themselves. The choice of the killer may be seen by some as homophobic but I personally find the twists and turns this movie takes fresh and original, never replicated with quite the same thrills or success, even two decades later. The total commitment to the role that every character in this movie plays makes it unnervingly captivating and unflinchingly real no matter how many times you watch it. If you want a movie that will make you think, one where you must watch it again and again to find all the little clues and foreshadowing that drips in every word of dialogue and every shocking shot of showmanship by this she-devil, then I promise you, this move is a must watch and a hidden gem that never gets old. High Tension will be a movie to watch for even more decades to come.

Brilliant slasher. Seen reviews saying the dubbing is bad, so watch the original with sub titles!

Intense horror-flic with creepy villain. Not easy to digest, but "a must see" for horror-fans!
