High Life Reviews

All I can say is that it's a pleasure to have my reviewing faculties blown and my psyche splintered by this master filmmaker.

| Original Score: 5/5 | Dec 23, 2019

There is much of Tarkovsky's Solaris in the main body and the flashbacks... could be lifted straight from the same director's Stalker. High Life is, however, stuffed with Denis' characteristic philosophical derangement.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Dec 21, 2019

It goes out into the universe to look in...it is first and foremost a film by Claire Denis.

| May 22, 2019

High Life will send you back out into the world with a totally new idea of what black holes symbolize. It is an elliptical film, yes, because it will answer only the questions that you did not think to ask.

| May 14, 2019

Pattinson is as subtle, exacting and unpredictable as he's ever been, transmitting bone-deep loneliness and resigned fatalism with very little dialogue to help him.

| Original Score: 5/5 | May 12, 2019

It's heavy, angry stuff. A film that lashes out at humankind as a species of grunting thugs entirely at the mercy of the procreative impulse. It ends with an uncharacteristic touch of optimism, but it's little and late. You'll need a stiff drink.

| Original Score: 4/5 | May 10, 2019

High Life asks us to consider the passion - and the terror - of crossing the event horizon to cast off the laws that bind us and live another day.

| May 10, 2019

Veteran French director Claire Denis' first English-language film is a fascinating mixture of highbrow and B-movie elements.

| Original Score: 4/5 | May 9, 2019

In working without exteriors, Denis sacrifices a crucial component of her range... For all its intimacy, it says less about the isolating expanse of mortality than it does about the limitations of a Claire Denis movie shot entirely in the studio.

| May 9, 2019

Denis has made a spellbindingly mysterious object - as nonsensical as existence, maybe, until you give it a quarter-turn, and look again.

| Original Score: 4/5 | May 8, 2019

Like all good sci-fi, Denis's film also speaks to the moment...

| Original Score: 4/5 | May 8, 2019

As with so many of Denis' films, the point is to contrive an overwhelmingly powerful mood and moment, an almost physiological sensation, this one incubated in the vast, cold reaches of space.

| Original Score: 5/5 | May 8, 2019

High Life is the filmmaker at her most dark, a mesmerising, patience-testing, violent exploration in the darkest reaches of outer and inner space.

| Original Score: 4/5 | May 7, 2019

Denis strings together a series of alternately gorgeous and horrifying images that simultaneously communicate the smallness of our lives and the vastness of the universe.

| May 2, 2019

You may not love the ride, but you should at least take it and see.

| Apr 23, 2019

The vastness of space is such a natural fit for the free-floating narratives of Claire Denis, it's a wonder she hasn't embraced sci-fi before now.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Apr 18, 2019

The production design, the shimmering, evocative Stuart Staples music, everything blends together.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Apr 15, 2019

Denis tries her hand at science fiction, but done in her naturalistic, heady style that trades high tech science in favor of exploring what deep space isolation can do on one's mental state. It's an arthouse meditation on time, death, and solitude.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Apr 12, 2019

A movie that is always vaguely interesting but that, here and there, finds ways to be brilliant in a wonderfully twisted way...

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Apr 12, 2019

"High Life" is a bust, a bleak, droll experiment in shock cinema for the high art crowd.
