Hits Reviews

Dec 21, 2022

I really don't get the reviews for this film. It's brilliant, very funny, and the acting is superb. Some might say that the whole thing is a set up for one joke, but even if this were true, which it isn't, it sticks the landing.

Highly underrated. Great cast, original story. Genuinely funny. While I was watching it I was reminded of Bobcat Goldthwait's "God Bless America". However I think Hits executed a lot of the same ideas in a different and enjoyable fashion.

Underrated. While criticisms about the unevenness of the story and its reliance on character behavior are justified, Hits makes a strong statement about the overabundance of celebrity in modern culture. David Cross creates a microcosm of YouTube (and other social media) culture, showing how it can turn undeserving people into overnight celebrities for nothing other than general stupidity. On top of it, he critiques the types of people who perpetuate this garbage culture by latching onto vapid egomaniacs in order to perpetuate their own ends. What's most unfortunate about Hits was that it was released two years too soon, as the idea of clueless people co-opting situations and individuals they don't fully understand in order to facilitate a "movement" is all too relevant in this presidential election year.

humerous commentary on our social media society. And a fitting tribute to the small town of Liberty, NY

Absolute trash. I found it just as annoying as people who actually care about likes and becoming popular. This is a prime example of shit satire. Sorry David Cross, this was a fail.

The film mostly takes place in the ironically named small town of Liberty, New York. A local man, at odds with the town council, unknowingly has a video of him being ejected from a council meeting go viral. When a NYC hipster collective gets wind of his troubles, they travel to the town to help him. While many people may only see this as a drama, this was the absolute most laugh-out-loud, clever film I've seen in a long while. The set dressing and costumes were top-notch. The critique on modern American celebrity culture, with its reality stars and viral YouTube videos is biting. David Cross directs while featuring Matt Walsh, Michael Cera, David Koechner, Amy Sedaris, Erinn Hayes, Russ Tamblyn, & Julia Stiles! BEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Has a relaxed funny vibe that works in its benefit up until the big twist which feels out of place and unnecessary. B-

Dull and not funny. Expected better from David Cross.

Perhaps I'm the only person who thought this was brilliant satire. It's not meant to be taken entirely seriously, as it is an exaggeration of reality, but it is nevertheless a good comment on it. It does not just 'make fun' of small-town folk, but big-city folk as well. I have heard it described as misanthropic, and maybe it is, but it is all in good fun. More than a comment on modern society and "technology," it is perhaps a comment on the perpetual differences between the "country" and "city" philosophy in America, and the way in which city people will sometimes revere or venerate those who seem disadvantaged until it is obvious that their beliefs do not align whatsoever. A very good parody of American culture. It reminds me a bit of Todd Solondz, only more hopeful.

Unlikeable and derivative of any type of structure (and not in a good way), "Hits" feels like a script penned by David Cross after a day of hearing crappy music on the radio and hearing young, ungrateful teens on their iphones. "Hits" is a mess of crass characters whose stories crumble rather than intertwine.

Meh, had a few funny moments but ended up a little too dry to be really funny.

An interesting debut. Definitely has a sharp voice. Unfortunately needs some refinement. But damn.

Thought it was a great film. Extremely sad, not sad sad but sad (ironic) as in it's reflection of todays youth. i really enjoyed it and didn't think i would.

Not great but not terrible. Not really worth seeing but I'm not mad I watched it. "Eh" pretty much sums it up.

Can't believe this isn't more highly rated. The Brooklyn stuff is brilliant. Overall I found it very entertaining

Maybe I'm too easy but I thought this was an awesome darkly humorous movie about the obsession with the internet as a tool for our society to actualize its love of the superficial, the trendy and the popular without ever questioning whether there is any merit or depth to any of it.

I really don't like saying that something could have been a lot worse, but I have found that phrase to be particularly applicable to this film. Throughout the film I found myself waiting in nervous anticipation for somebody to drop a nauseatingly stupid one-liner, for Dave to pull an "Assault on Wall Street", or for the director to cram some blowhard cultural "lesson" down my throat. But none of that happened. I admit that I was a bit surprised. It is quite obvious that Hits has its flaws. Plenty of them. It takes a too broad perspective that, although allowing the audience to meet more characters, prevents full, well-rounded character development and often pulls attention away from the plot. There were plenty of opportunities to go deeper or ask tougher questions which were not taken advantage of. Some of the scenes are a bit silly and quite unnecessary, and there is of course the blatant yet hackneyed underlying political messages which unless carefully executed (clumsy, in this case) are sure to cause some uncomfortable conversations after the movie, once again playing that old broken record of "you're a really inconsiderate jerk" and demanding that apologies be sent via text message late into the night after your significant other slams the door in your face. Yeah, it could be one of those. But there are some good things. I found myself chuckling, even laughing, on several occasions. The characters, although mostly underdeveloped, are believable and every single one of them reminded me of someone I know. The plot is not uniquely interesting or original, but it is more complex than a trashy satirical cultural meltdown flick (see "Assault on Wall Street", although omit the part about satire. If only the film industry was so fortunate). At worst, it's decent entertainment with a little bite. Not too awfully bad for a directorial debut, not particularly engaging or unique, I was a bit uncertain about whether I actually liked it or not. Mr. Eminem junior (just watch the darn movie if you don't know what I'm talking about. And by movie, I mean 8 Mile [just kidding]) really got under my skin. He reminded me of me too much, but he was also too stupid. I almost felt sorry for the poor loser. But aren't I supposed to be relating to the main characters like Dave and Katelyn? The broad perspective strikes again! I didn't mean to give it three stars but I hit a pot hole while I was writing this in the car and my hand slipped, gliding along the screen of my Galaxy to the end of the third star. Poetic justice? Probably not.
