Holmes & Watson Reviews
An unfunny bore of a film.
While this is not Ferrell & Reilly's best film, they are still fun to watch. The plot made me laugh. I enjoyed it.
Honestly, was kinda underwhelmed... it was funny in segments & I love Ferrell & Reilly together, but I expected more... I expected "Step Brothers" level of humor... I was just felt... well "Eh".
I laughed and chuckled at all the right places. Funny movie. The critics obviously haven't watched it and are just copying pasting other people's reviews and ratings.
Worst movie of my life . Not funny for one second . Will Ferrell I want my money back!!!!
It doesn't even deserve 1/2 star. Ferret attempt at "acting" consists of one pose and an absolutely horrible fake british accent. He should be permantly banned from making movies. Why does anyone think he is funny? He is offensive, vile, mysoginist and unfunny. One of the most offensive films ever made.
this movie is soooo stupid but sooo funny 🤣🤣🤣 i understand the ratings but trust me, if you like corny comedy you'd love this one.
When is hollywont going to learn to stop casting these two together. They are absolutely horrible. Posing and stilted dialog are not acting.
This movie is hated and I dint know why. Eventually this will have a cult following. I really enjoyed this take on these legendary characters. Will and John knock it out of the park. Tim Treakle
Stupid but hilarious. Its supposed to be an idiotic spoof on Robert Downeys Sherlock. Also with Ralph Fiennes as moriarty. With sooo many horrible movies out there I dont know why this one is rated so low.
this movie is so painfully unfunny its crazy how they thought this was a good idea to show. people
This movie took me back to a time where i used to hate Will Ferrell's movies. Obnoxious and repetitive.
Quite possibly the worst movie I've ever seen and I have always liked the Ferrell and Reily pairings in movies. From the terrible acting, nothing comedic about the movie, and an oddly timed musical part threw me off. Plus all of the President Trump bashing and references throughout made this move atrocious.
One of the worst comedies I've ever watched. The issue is not the concept of a raunchy Sherlock Holmes parody. The problem is that every single scene ruins its joke at some point, if the joke had anything to ruin. The writing doesn't know which jokes are funny enough to riff on, or which ones should be quick. The cinematography doesn't know how to frame the physical comedy, to show the audience how funny the situation is. Neither Holmes nor Watson have enough consistent characterisation for their characters to set up/pay off jokes, they simply are/aren't whatever's convenient for the current scene. When the jokes get edgy, there is no consideration towards trying to make sure the audience is laughing instead of being grossed out, because as far as this film's concerned, it's the same thing. What really got me angry wasn't the jokes that were in the movie, so much as the jokes that weren't. They parody the Robert Downey Jr Sherlock stunts, going so far as to replicate the "discombobulate" scene step by step... Then DON'T discombobulate at the end?! Or have a scene where Sherlock poisons Watson to test a theory, but veer off into the poison having silly symptoms, instead of actually making a joke out of the scene's original good idea? The dialogue spends ten seconds a scene on the idea of parodying Sherlock Holmes before it gets bored to do something else, and does that so often, throws away so much good material for tired jokes, it feels like an insult against comedy. The extras should've revolted and taken charge of this movie, they were far funnier than anyone actually in charge of the thing.
Tragically unfunny. The concept of Ferrell and Reilly combining for a Holmes and Watson spoof is great on paper but you still need to attempt a story and structure.
This was simply put "CUTE". It was comical at points with modern references, but lacked the humor to the LOL point. You can watch this one to pass the time, but because of the subtle comedy, you will need to pay attention. I was barely worth the time investment! Watch for yourself, and let us all know your thoughts. - Matthew
I'm leaving this review score for my wife who absolutely loved this. I personally found it funny in patches but thought the great premise was largely wasted. Watch it and see what you think...
I am a Sherlock Holmes fan. In fact, I created and teach a program about Holmes, and have seen most of the Holmes movies that are out there. I'm a fan. I'm also a huge Will Ferrell fan. Homes and Watson is a perfect blend. It is not a parody of Holmes, nor is it a tribute. It is Will Ferrell and John Reilly having an absolute blast with the tropes of Holmes and they don't miss a trick. Are you expecting an homage to the detective? Don't. Are you expecting Will Ferrell and John Reilly in Step Brothers? Peurile humor? Low brow humor? You've come to the right place. I laughed through the whole thing the first time. I laughed the second time, and now several years later I'm giggling through it once again. It's hilarious. Don't give any credence to those who had no idea who Ferrell was before they came to this movie, or expected an approach that was reverent. It is irreverent. It is ir-everything, and I'm here for it. I wish - earnestly wish - folks loved this movie en masse. There are great lines scattered throughout, but pearl clutchers are not welcome. Here's a clue. The very first scene is meant to weed out anyone who shouldn't be here. Do you have the humor of a 12 year old boy? Then, welcome.
I love bad movies but this goes beyond the pale.
Almost 10 years in the making due to being stuck in development hell, Holmes & Watson was finally released in 2018 to the sound of thousands of critics panning it and audiences steering clear. Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly reunited in this oddly-timed Sherlock Holmes spoof, many years too late to be relevant as the Robert Downey Jr.-starring Guy Ritchie films have yet to resurface. In all fairness, on paper this still sounded like it could have been fun. Dumb, no doubt, but fun. Both leads have shown time and time again that they can make even the most paper-thin plots work thanks to brilliant comedic timing and clever improvisation (see Step Brothers or Talladega Nights) and the subject matter isn't without spoofing potential. Unfortunately, there is very little for both actors to work with here and the project feels like a tired, rushed, let's-just-get-this-over-with kind of deal. What there is of a script is frankly awful and 99% of the jokes fall completely flat so that leaves the two leads' charisma alone to carry you through but even that wears thin by the halfway point. The many cameos are also a complete waste, sadly, with the likes of Steve Coogan and Hugh Laurie popping in and out long enough to regret showing up at all. The film sees Sherlock Holmes (Ferrell), who is very smart and perceptive but also very dumb and not perceptive at all depending on the scene, take on a case when Queen Victoria is threatened with a corpse in a cake. Professor Moriarty (Ralph Fiennes) is suspected to be behind it all but Sherlock's "investigation" takes him down an increasingly odd rabbit hole. Along the way, Watson (C. Reilly) tries to officially become Holmes' co-detective and they meet Dr. Grace Hart (Rebecca Hall) whose best friend was raised by feral cats (?). The jokes poking fun at Guy Ritchie's films work the best, despite being absurdly late, and there is an endearingly goofy musical number near the end but the slapstick humor is uncomfortably unfunny throughout and there are just nowhere near enough funny lines to make Holmes and Watson's endless rambling worthwhile. Even the most die-hard Sherlock and Will Ferrell fan won't have much fun with this one. Holmes & Watson suffers from a tragically long and messy development, an unsalvageable script and very poor direction from Etan Cohen, who also delivered the equally infuriating Get Hard a few years back. This is one case you won't want to take on, I'm afraid. Lazy.
