Properly moving but hard to watch.

I seem to remember many films coming out in the years following 9/11 that attempted to justify and even celebrate the war on terror and the US occupation in the Middle East, without ever showing the cost or what happened to those who paid that price. Even when this film falls short with a generic script and some uninspired acting I at least give the writers credit for attempting to show the not so pleasant reality that many who were asked to serve are left with when they return back to society. They also veered away from the standard "US are saviors, Muslims are terrorists" narrative that was pervasive at the time and, even if done in a predictably cliche manner, I give credit for at least questioning and criticizing US motivations by including multiple points of view. A few of the storylines were interesting but some of the acting and dialogue felt so forced and mechanical that it kept taking me out of the scenes. Because there were so many characters, none ever really had a chance to become fully developed, all remaining at a surface level when more exposition with fewer characters could have worked better. Jessica Biel was fairly engaging though and deserves a mention. Even when I may admire the attempt, it doesnt mean I will necessarily love the final product. 4.5/10 Samuel L. Jackson Binge: He gave the most authentic performance in this one for my money and even though some of the scenes with his son felt a bit heavy handed, I was glad to see them included. SLJ #10

Depressing at times, but true! The suicide rate of Iraq and Afghanistan vets is 4 times that of the normal population. This movie shows why!

Home of the brave is a bizarre film to review. The opening in the middle of the battlefield is amazing and so well presented that one feels they're smack in the middle of action. But then the rest of the movie is a cliché ridden melodramatic mess. For anyone who has been away from home for a time, especially those whose lives have been spent in a war zone, a return to "normalcy" requires a period of adjustment. It's more difficult for some than others. Had Home of the Brave presented credible stories about believable characters, it might have been a powerful drama. Certainly, the setup is in place for something remarkable. Unfortunately, bad writing and heavy-handed direction have taken this movie in an unenviable direction. Not only is the bulk of Home of the Brave preachy and predictable, but it features some of the worst dialogue to be found in any non-horror film this year. War movie fanatics can do

It passed the time and that's it. Without a few good performances, it's probably just a waste of time watching. But, we'll, I still liked it.

Very under rated movie

Calm & Strong movie showing a healing process that is both real and poinent. This movie educates us about the back side of war, plus shows us the challenges in healing emotionally. There is zero SJW crap in hear and quality patriotism for those who live thru dramatic struggles of any walk of life. You don't need to be in Iraq for this movie to parallel getting over any deep struggle. Not a super tear jerker, just powerful stuff- 😎 PS the critics who dislike this movie avoid the need and value of healing in favor of hatefulness and callous discontent towards all people with ptsd, trams or latent shock. Shame is thy who hates the healers. Every actor was humble and skilled. This movie honors your inner hero if you are one called to heal no matter the discomfort... any one with subtle or obvious addictions can bennifit from connecting with this carrying film.

From an inexperienced perspective, it would assumingly seem they had gotten the PTSD mentality at a decent rate with frequent paths though parts affected by the somewhat overall flimsy direction after the excessive tensity on the triggering battleground, giving it a dishonorably acceptable watch. Who taught those actors how to wear berets? They look like blueberry panacakes sitting on their heads; totaly wrong in how they wore them in the movie.

Jesus Christ- who are the ass hole critics? This film is full of the shit that people in the theatre of war go through. Damn well portrayed. I help Veterans. Some disabilities are way beyond my volunteer capabilities. Some of the scenes are obvious.....what you'd expect. But we need to learn from them. We like veterans. But are we willing to get off our ass to volunteer? Example: find out which local organizations are doing good stuff- helping with divorce/housing/medical help/homes:foreclosures/food/VA problems. I was expecting more war and less confusing political ramblings.

A sombre look at vets returning from the Iraq war. The stories are true to life and somewhat heartbreaking. The movie has a leftist bent that I didn't care for, but it was well acted and scripted so I was able to get past that. Other than the anti-war riff, about the only other thing I didn't like was the character portrayed by 50 Cent. Just seemed a bit overdone and too predictably anti-establishment. Much better movie than I expected.

its not really my thing but i did enjoy watching it. the performances were strong and its basically how the war can effect you afterwards also and of course the patriotism of the movie.

The movie was so so. Unfortunately the cast was not believable in their roles (Jackson possibly was more convincing) at least at one point in this film we hear Jackson's trademark "Motherfucker!" line

"Will, what happened over there?" This was the last film directed by Academy Award winning producer Irwin Winkler who recently has gone back to doing what he does best: producing movies. Home of the Brave is an overly melodramatic war film that fails to connect with the audience despite its good intentions. The acting in this film is pretty bad, the script is absolutely terrible, and the direction felt too generic. The script, written by Mark Friedman, was very unsubtle, hammering us over the head with the PTSD suffered by the soldiers who returned home from Iraq. Several war films have dealt with these issues far better and in a more subtle manner than Home of the Brave does. Winkler has good intentions with this film, he doesn't try to send a political anti-war message or anything like that but rather focuses on the pain the soldiers have to face when they return home and how difficult adapting can become for them. Those noble intentions, didn't translate well into a film that was full of war cliches and terrible dialogues. It became too melodramatic and the characters were never developed realistically. It just rang false and it should've dealt with such a serious issue in a more complex manner. I couldn't connect with any of the characters in this film and was disappointed with Winkler's direction. The story follows a group of soldiers in the Iraq War who are pleased to receive the news that their tour of duty is coming to an end in two weeks. As they make plans of what they will do when they return home, they are sent on a humanitarian mission to deliver some medical supplies at a nearby village. One of the convoys is driven by Vanessa Price (Jessica Biel), while another one is guarded by Tommy Yates (Brian Presley), his hometown best friend Jordan (Chad Michael Murray), and Jamal (50 Cent). A surgeon named Will Marsh (Samuel Jackson) also accompanies them on the mission. Upon arriving at the village the unit is ambushed and several lives are lost, while others suffer psychological traumas and physical injuries. The lives of these soldiers are changed forever and once they arrive home to their families they must learn how to adjust to their "normal" lives. We see how each one of these characters have difficulty doing so as they continue to be emotionally torn by the war, while some of them continue to cross each other's path back home in Washington. Home of the Brave felt tremendously out dated despite it only being made 7 years ago. It probably has to do with the fact that this film was a bit lazy in the way they tried to tackle the subject matter. It is something we've seen in many other war movies recently that have had a much more subtle approach. This film just felt too repetitive and predictable. The performance from the cast also hurt this film tremendously and not even Samuel L Jackson could do enough to save this. There is a short cameo by Christina Ricci that really felt out of place, like many other moments in this film. The different stories didn't connect very well either and the characters were just presented in a very lazy manner. Home of the Brave has all the war cliches you can think of and doesn't present anything groundbreaking or original.

Wow I really liked this movie, I'm actually surprised by all the mediocre reviews here. Enjoyed getting a look at the overlooked side of war which would be trying to re-assimilate back home and the struggles faced there. The opening battle scene is super well done and I like how it connected everyone for the remainder of the movie which follows 4 separate veterans and their very different stories. Was impressed with Jessica Biel for the first time ever and Samuel L Jackson, damn I had forgotten that man can actually act, its been so long since I've seen him be anything other than Samuel Mother F'n Jackson. 02/13+
