Hoosiers Reviews
Here's an oldie but goodie for you! A David vs. Goliath story about a tiny Indiana high school basketball team, led by a former college coach with a checkered past (Gene Hackman RIP) and their unlikely run at the state championship back in the 1950's. Barbara Hershey and Dennis Hopper co-star as a skeptical Principal and alcoholic father/assistant coach repectively. The film is a classic; well written and directed. Every few years I watch it again. Hoosiers having been released in 1986 (I was in high school myself) I reckon I've seen it 5 times by now.
This movie came out a few years after I was born. My older brother and father were already a fan by the time I saw it. I grew up playing basketball and the story of a small town team making it to the state finals appealed to me as I grew up in a small town. The players conviction and unbelievable performance by Hackman, captivate me every time I watch it. The music is incredible. The basketball scenes are awesome. I cry at various points during this flick as it gets me emotional. Ollie making those 2 free throws to win the game remind me of 2 free throws I made, coming right off the bench. Team, team, team. No one more important than the other. I love that. Living in Massachusetts, Boston Celtics is all about team. You must watch this movie. The greatest basketball movie ever made.
UTTERLY run-of-the-mill fare here, despite the great cast. Coach with a dodgy past takes over a down and out team, gets kickback from players and families, slowly wins them over etc etc Maybe it's an American thing to be so obsessed with basketball, but if someone told me this had been devised by AI I wouldn't have been surprised
Hossiers is a classic basketball film from the 1980s featuring Gene Hackman in a leading role. The story revolves around him coaching a struggling basketball team and guiding them to a championship victory. If you were to experience this film for the first time in the 80s, you would likely find it to be an extraordinary masterpiece. However, viewing it today might give the impression of a familiar narrative, one that has been revisited countless times. My approach to reviewing films is rooted in the context of the era in which they were released. In conclusion, I believe Hossiers is a remarkable film. It boasts a compelling storyline, skillfully directed, with a well-paced narrative that takes viewers through a rollercoaster of emotions, culminating in a thrilling championship showdown that keeps the audience engaged throughout. I genuinely think everyone should take the time to watch this film, as it has proven to be timeless and remains an excellent piece of cinema. It would be fantastic to see it revitalized for a new generation, perhaps even through a modern platform like Netflix.
They needed a second chance to finish first. Hoosiers (released in some countries as Best Shot) is a 1986 American sports drama film written by Angelo Pizzo and directed by David Anspaugh in his feature directorial debut 🏀 Not bad, but not my favourite either 😐 Meh, it passed the time. Just. 😐 👍🏼👎🏼 Failed college coach Norman Dale gets a chance at redemption when he is hired to coach a high school basketball team in a tiny Indiana town. After a teacher persuades star player Jimmy Chitwood to quit and focus on his long-neglected studies, Dale struggles to develop a winning team in the face of community criticism for his temper and his unconventional choice of assistant coach: Shooter, a notorious alcoholic.
Super boring I knew I'd watched part of it before and after watching it again I remembered why I didn't finish it the first time.
Film jadul banyak kesan menginspirasi anak muda. Tentang pertandingan dan kerja keras. Salut.
The score and nonstop barrage of basketballs scenes allow the movie to flow freely. Hackman is awesome in a role that is not that detailed at all. There's a completely unnecessary, tacked on romance for some reason. All usual 80's quality here.
I just watched this movie last night, and it is easily one of if not the best sports movies I've ever seen. The characters and actors did a great job, and I watched this in memory of the actor of Coach Norm. I loved the story of this movie, and it just made the movie much better when I realized that it was a true story as well. Whoever watches this movie is gonna have a treat. Especially If they love basketball, like me. Anyway, this movie was great and one of my favorites. God bless!
One of my top 3 sports movies of all time. Wonderful cast and great period flavor. RIP, Gene Hackman.
Unfortunately I can’t leave zero stars. Absolute snooze fest of a movie with a terrible starting cast. These kids come off so cocky, and there coach just oozes arrogance. Typical born on third base story
I like basketball, I like movies, and I like basketball movies. I am a sucker for a good Sports Movie. I proudly embrace all the cheesy-ness that come with the common tropes of the genre. The slow motion, the montages, the ragtag bunch of misfits that band together for a common a goal, a no-nonsense coach that demands respect from his players, I love all that stuff. It is what a lot of people may see as cliched, but this was one of the movies that helped pioneer those story beats, and it remains one of the best. "Hoosiers" is a 1986 movie based on a true story starring Gene Hackman as Norman Dale. Gene Hackman does great in his role, as does Dennis Hopper as Scooter Fletch. Both actors can play great over the top villains but do an excellent job in this movie as more human, flawed and vulnerable characters. The performances from the younger actors are also very good. Each player is given his own moment to shine and they deliver on their moment. The music in this movie is also very well done, the soundtrack is at home in any basketball player's playlist. Other than the music and characters, what else does this movie do well? Simply put, the basketball. This movie does a great job in the basketball element of the story. Of all the sports movies I've seen, this may have the most screen time of the actual sport. The story does an excellent job of adding variety to each of their games. It is like the movie has 4 different exciting movie finales in one movie. Every game that they play, could easily have been made to be the climax of a lesser sports movie. And I eat up every moment of it. The motivational speeches given in this film are all very quotable. And I am confident that the lines in this movie are spoken in every locker room by every basketball coach. I think it may be a law in Indiana. On the negative side, there is a romantic subplot that is thrown into the movie that feels tacked on last second. But the movie doesn't spend much time on it, so neither will I. At the end of the day, since the film makers and actors all played to the best of their ability. I don't care what the other critics say, in my book, THIS FILM IS A WINNER.
Cloying? Perhaps. Nostalgic? Certainly; and, proudly, authentically and gloriously so. A great, amongst the very best, of sports movies, it tugs hard at the heart and our shared belief in the transcendent moments that make sport. And, if that’s not enough, you have Gene Hackman, Dennis Harper and (who doesn’t love) Barbara Hershey, to boot. A Friday Night Lights for Indiana basketball - it’s spiritual home. It is for basketball what The Natural is for baseball - stirring, heroic, romantic, and earnest without a trace of cynicism. And, for those asserting, understandably, that it feels formulaic, please note that it’s based loosely on the very true story of Indiana’s Milan High School’s 1954 basketball team, which won the Indiana state championship against Muncie Central High School - a school TEN times its size. In the case of Milan and Hickory, to echo the script: “ And David put his hand in the bag and took out a stone and slung it, and struck the Philistine on the head, and he fell to the ground.” This is not just a movie for basketball fans, or sports fans; it is a heartwarming and inspiring film for anyone who loves well-crafted and heartfelt movies. Very much recommended.
One of my all time favorite movies. I have watched it over and over again since 1986 and I am watching it again today lol. Love under dog movies.
A solid sports drama and a disturbing reminder of how small town America and high school sports works in the US. Bought this one on Prime as a rental as DVD costs a fortune in the UK and not in free streaming. It was part of the top 10 sports films as nominated by the AFI.
Outstanding movie, Hackman and Hopper were great together. Showed what a lot of kids went through and still do to this day especially in smaller schools. And if you went to a small school and loved basketball this movie is an absolute must watch for any age group.
I dont know why it's taken 34 years for me to watch this. Brilliant characters, great performances by Hopper and Hackman and an inspiring film about my favourite sport of Basketball.
Dennis Hopper, Gene Hackman. Hard not to like any movie they are in. They are always great even if the movie is mediocre. This movie is worth watching if you like sports related movies.
The classic comeback story with a team of basketball players led by Hackman and the town drunk. Teamwork over superstars.
Greatest sports movie of all time in my opinion.
