House of Spoils Reviews
This film slayed the house boots down.
Exciting finish in the second half, but disappoints overall.
"House of Spoils," a 2024 film featuring Ariana DeBose, caught me off guard—I wasn’t even aware it was coming out until I stumbled upon it in the 2024 release schedule. The story follows a chef haunted by a malevolent spirit at the site of her new restaurant. This ghost demands that she use certain ingredients—natural ones for which she was previously banished. If the chef fails to comply, she experiences terrifying visions, believing her food is infested with bugs or spoiled. The premise is undeniably creepy. While the film attempts to offer some intriguing elements, it ultimately falls short in terms of entertainment value. There were numerous directions the plot could have taken, but it seems the filmmakers opted for a singular path and stuck with it, which led to a somewhat disappointing experience. Ariana DeBose delivers a commendable performance as a woman unraveling under the pressure, doing what she can with the material at hand. I appreciated "House of Spoils" for what it aimed to achieve, but it’s one of those movies I likely won’t revisit. It simply didn’t captivate me enough to warrant multiple viewings.
What a disappointing ending. The movie actually had an interesting theme and was building good momentum until the scene where the chef crawls through the tunnel and comes upon a corpse. From that point on, the storyline and the script becomes LAME.
Great and intriguing plot that kept me engaged
What's with Blumhouse making these movies lol we had a haunted swimming pool movie and now we've got a haunted kitchen. This movie was so stupid.
Although I'm sure intentional, the over exaggerated gesturing of 'chef' was cringe worthy, especially the outdoor feast scene, it was almost too embarrassing to watch!! Directed differently the film would have been so much better.
The intrigue of a new kitchen is far more gripping than the supernatural goings-on, but it's the latter that ultimately wrest control of the story and refuse to give it back.
I just couldn't get past how unlikable the characters were in this. Not sure if it was the characters necessarily or the actors themselves... but it was a hard watch to say the least
Such a creepy movie
This is really a weird movie. The main character's over reacting. Hell's kitchen much scarier than this 🤣
A very different movie that combines a super natural element with a restaurant drama, and it's actually a fun combo because of the way they tie these two things together. Very cool to see Ariana DeBose in a horror story like this, she was excellent yet again. Ariana showed a lot of range throughout the performance, and has a charisma that adds to the entertainment factor. I also really appreciate the atmosphere of the movie. It feels very countryside, and has a good fall setting too. It heavily plays in to the cozy and fun experience. I did feel like the final act of the movie was weaker than the first two. There was something about it that felt sort of hollow, and when it ended it just ended, I didn't feel anything. But like I mentioned, they tie the genres together seamlessly, it has a cool story, and it's a pleasurable experience watching due to the sleek direction, editing, and cozy countryside, fall setting. Also it's always a joy to see Ariana in a movie, especially something like this. Thank you.
Was a fresh idea, but the presence behind the foods in the garden didn't ever make sense.
Had potential but the last 30 mins is insufferable
I thought house of spoils was actually pretty good. I wouldn't personally consider it a horror movie but I enjoyed how it leaned into the homegrown side of cooking. I enjoyed the movie overall and it exceeded expectations.
A very unique movie showing a tasteful mix of culinary and spooky. Good for a movie night if you have snacks prepared.
The terrible story is only surpassed by the terrible acting… who came up with this idea ?? The should have given all that money to charity.
Very plot heavy, definitely not as scary as the trailer. That being said, I enjoyed the direction they took the story, and I felt the ending tied up all the ends nicely, and did a good job bringing everything full circle. Maybe not my favorite movie, but definitely worth a watch.
Excellent movie! It builds slowly to a think for yourself conclusion. We are so used to wham bam and blood and horror in scary movies to appreciate a movie like this. It is very interesting to watch as clues from the past, present themselves! It tells a story and it has a fleshed out middle. It runs a bit slow, but if you are patient, you get there. Like the saying in the movie goes, its time to die and feed the soil. Well, the soil is our brains and ability to think. You can give someone a great movie, but they have to understand themselves, what the movie is saying. I really enjoyed it and the story itself was excellent. A movie for the thinkers and people who do not need to be shocked all the time!
For someone who loves to watch movies from Blumhouse, I must say this one is really a good one. The story is captivating and it has very interesting scenes. If you are expecting for jumpscare, you won’t get it nonetheless this movie made me realized that each one of us is afraid at some point our lives and its okay. Chef here represents us, who struggles everyday and pressured to do something on our lives. Instead of running from something who haunts us, we should face it just like what she did. Then maybe, we can have reward from it. I think I’m dramatic with this review, but its what i felt after watching it.
