Mostly effective comedy horror, with lots of cameos and in jokes, Truly disturbing opening scenes, Ground breaking makeup fx still hold up, But fustrating and dumb lead character decisions and reactions, ruin some of the fun.

A great werewolf movie I think superior to contemporary rivals. Some great effects and light on exposition, heavy on supernatural transformations and creepy atmosphere.

2/4 It's a noteworthy horror movie, memorable for revolutionizing the werewolf transformation. Oddly enough I think it's sequels are better.

While by no means a masterpiece and has flaws in places (the signature scene had me wondering why one of the characters was just staring; sure, she was shocked but the way the scene was dragged out had me wondering why she didn't just run; at least in Iron Man 2, the villain letting the briefcase armour scene occur was mainly because he was trying to prove a point), The Howling is still a good horror movie with groundbreaking special effects, a compelling, suspenseful story despite the whole lycanthropy thing being more of a twist for the characters than it is for the audience, a bookseller who's the best character on the movie despite only showing up in one scene and an effective ending despite some makeup issues. Even if you don't like this film, you have to admire it, alongside An American Werewolf in London, for not only making werewolves a creditable threat again but for also setting new standards for prosthetic makeup.

The Howling may have its flaws but don't mistake circumstantial shortcomings for chronic incompetence. Dante is still learning the craft of filmmaking here and his Warewolf imagining looks a million bucks while he's still figuring out things like proper pacing and continuity. And it has the greatest ending I've seen in a long time.

The Howling is really entertaining werewolf horror comedy is different than American werewolf in London. And the werewolf special effects looks incredible and really fascinating gore make-up effects and fantastic cast and cinematography.

This classic Dante film may not be the most talked-about werewolf movie, but it stands out as one of the most innovative.

Perfect horror movie with the ultimate best werewolf transformation in hollywood history tied with An American Werewolf In London. All practical effects done so well. The story, scary setting, uncomfortable sexual situations, doom and gloom atmosphere makes this a true classic.

The Howling is by far one of my favorite werewolf films. It's also one of my all time favorite films by director Joe Dante. The special effects by Bob Bottin is top notch. The transformation and design of the werewolves is incredible to look at. Truly terrifying. This is one of the few instances were the film outdid the source material. The Howling shows us how werewolves should look/act like. Nothing cute and cuddly about these werewolves.

1981's 'The Howling' would probably have been the definitive werewolf film had it not been for the release of 'An American Werewolf in London' in the same year. SYNOPSIS: 'After a bizarre and near deadly encounter with a serial killer, a television newswoman is sent to a remote mountain resort whose residents may not be what they seem.' Director Joe Dante's film would put him very much in the minds of the big Hollywood studios. Without this film we'd have never got 'Gremlins'. As a film itself it's quite ridiculous, with a crazy story which hurtles all over the place. It's perverse in places and very sexual, whilst also asking difficult questions about America in the early 1980s. It's a great monster movie but some of the transformations look terrible now, and in comparison to AAWIL of the same year, they look even worse if not comically bad. All I'll say is 'ears'. If you know you know! However, that final scene will live with me for a long time. Forty years after its release it still shocks and amuses audiences. It's a classic werewolf movie, it's just not the best classic of the genre. 6/10

Top 5 best werewolf movie of all time, with the best werewolf transformation of all time. And a slow burn of suspense throughout this entire movie. My only ding on this movie was...when the 2 survivors drove away from the town, the werewolves standing in the distance looked fake. Other than that...this movie was way ahead of it's time, for horror movies that were made in the late 70s/early 80s.

Imagine you try and relax in a remote mountain village and everyone there is a fucking werewolf! Typical Joe Dante flick, in the best way possible: fun monsters stuff, creepy atmosphere, likable characters, a real sense of the characters surroundings, and media satire. Great effects by Rob Bottin, although I do like Baker's effects in AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON better.

Obviously Dante adds humorous bits and digressions throughout the movie but he also effectively builds tension especially in the last act.

Tongue in cheek werewolf horror. Effects are superb for 1980. Good, solid film. Well worth watching.

There's ambition and respect in Dante's direction, but the film is thrown off by things that just aren't needed and the film comes off feeling convoluted. I think the worst part of it is that it just wore me out.. As the movie went on, I just felt exhausted and kinda over it. -(mixed) 🍀

In spite of the cheesy special effects at the end with the barn scene, the overall tension and the thrill and the story not to mention decent acting, it is still one of the best werewolf movies ever. The humor is less obvious than An American Werewolf in London but it's till there. The script is better than the original novel IMO.

Works well for itself given its age thanks to some fun social commentary.
