Hunter Killer Reviews

Mar 18, 2025

Primo movie. Most of the reviewers obviously have their heads where the sun don’t shine!

Hunter Killer jumps straight into action with little time for character development, which can be a hit or miss depending on what you're looking for. The plot is straightforward but packed with tension, keeping the pace tight throughout. While it doesn't dive deep into its characters, there are small moments like the archery scene that try to add some depth. The directing keeps things engaging, and the cinematography does a solid job of capturing the intensity of underwater warfare, though some CGI moments are not perfect. The acting is commendable, with Gerard Butler delivering a dependable performance, but nothing groundbreaking. The script holds the movie together, balancing the tactical aspects with the action-heavy sequences. The sound design and score work well to enhance the tension, adding to the overall thrill. It is not a film that reinvents the genre, but it knows what it is. An action-packed military thriller that delivers on suspense and spectacle. If you are in the mood for something that keeps the adrenaline going without overcomplicating things, Hunter Killer does the job.

I am from Brazil and I don't know a lot about American military. I can't say this movie is accurate regarding submarine and military issues, but I can say it is rather entertaining. In fact, after 30 minutes I was rooting for the good guys. You might root for who stands for the good ones and even ask who they are.

Good movie, better than I expected. Gerard Butler always good and does a fine job here. I'm not a very big fan of submarine movies but I found this one to be suspenseful all the way through. Thumbs up.

I’ve officially stopped relying on RT critics to tell me what movies are good and what movies are trash. This was a superb movie in every way. Suspense, feel-good ending… what’s not to like? I’ll tell you what- critics who give movies like The Substance a better rating than Hunter Killer…. you & people who respect your terrible opinions on films, are what’s wrong with the world…

It's seemed like it had a high budget with cool effects, but it came off as cheesy. The acting was bad by some of the cast.

It is very misleading by the critics to condemn a perfectly good naval adventure by overly critical and tiring rhetoric trying to be "the most amazing critical analysis". Everyone always forgets... sometimes it's just an entertaining story. Don't over think it. Personally it looks like 2/3 audience people understood this.

Saw this first time at the cinema when it was released. I know many didn’t agree with it but even second time of watching I found it entertaining. A great cast and Michael Nvquist’s last film with him dying far too young before its theatrical release.

In the line of high stakes submsrine movies it's no Hunt for Red October but an enjoyable enough way to fill an afternoon.

I borrowed this from the library and I'm so glad I didn't pay to see this. I'm extremley disappointed that Gary Oldman and Gerard Buttler would associate themselves with this director. I hope they know better for next time.

Top fictional story, top acting

I would say very comprehensive. Good fictional movie

If you can overlook the story - which isn't plausible at all - and remember this is meant for entertainment, this is a fantastic action movie! The acting is good, the characters are good, and the beautiful Linda Cardellini returns. Even though most of the movie takes place on a submarine, they do a good job of balancing out screen time so you're not stuck in one spot for too long. I really appreciated the respect this movie gave to submarine Captains of two different factions. Yes, initially there was repulse at "we're bringing Russians here?" but it turned into "no one wants this war, we will work together." I should ignore it, but for the sake of being an accurate review, I'm going to touch upon the plot. As mentioned previously, this isn't possible. A military general staging a coup and deciding he's going to start the next war? And none of the other soldiers are like 'wait a second, that's the president, he's turning on the president!' The guy who started the coup died, which - at least for me - felt like a letdown. He took his own president hostage and was about to cause a war, yet he dies and there's no justice. So now everyone moves on like "okay, it's over." Great movie for action and excitement, but not at all a story driven movie.

Writers/director clearly unfamiliar with US naval operations, culture and conduct. So many errors in the first five minutes alone. The movie cannot be taken seriously at any level. Considering the cast (Oldman, Butler), really have to put the blame where it belongs: The writers, director and producers. I'd sooner watch a Steven Segal flick, and that's really hitting rock bottom.

Predictable plot with a lack of attention to detail regarding how a United States attack submarine is operated, let alone the conduct of the officers and crew. SO MANY mistakes in the first 20 minutes that after a time suspending disbelief and trying to enjoy the movie becomes an impossibility. (Not to mention that 18 years prior Hunt for Red October got most things right. ) Don't waste time watching this at home ; there is good reason in bombed at the box office. A stellar cast means that the fault lies with the director and writers.

I'm biased due to the fact that I have read all early Clancy books featuring submarines, so I have my own expectations as to what technical accuracy should be. This movie is maybe better than Iron Eagle and that's about all I can say about it.
