Hyena Reviews
Gripping film with a couple of gory scenes. The film was totally let down though by the silly open ending.
It's British! What more can I say! Was expecting better from them. Similar to many of their cop shows. Not a bad movie. Recommended for a afternoon and early night film. Good date movie if your girlfriend ain't the rom-com type.
It's a dichotomy of slow and listless vs. fast-paced and thrilling. It feels very much like the behind-camera team lacked experience, and felt that corny, cliched character traits and plain, boring camerawork would be fine. That's the first hour sorted. THEN we change gear, and hit a whole other level of storytelling that sees it evolve into a gritty, fresh, indie thriller
what the kind of ending????? good movie, good plot, good acting, good everything except the ending. better off if a random person died, a politician lost an election and some got in a fender bender than this. they leave you hanging like a bugger during flu season
Pretty standard police drama
good performances but a terribly messed up ending, the director trying to be over smart and too creative by making the audience feel it to be a total waste of time.
This movie dives deep into a broken and corrupt world of coppers and drug dealers. Awesome acting skills.
Classic British crime drama that's a typically gritty and violent affair, 'Hyena' gives a realistic-feeling insight into the corruption of a drug task force. The performances from the cast are fantastic and very believable which makes watching the characters world spiral out of control a real treat, albeit a dreary and depressing one. What lets this film down is the script itself which is somewhat unfocused. Overall, it's a worthy entry into British crime drama, but may not be for everyone.
Hyena does a good job engaging the viewer in the beginning with an intense few minutes, but slowly fails to entertain throughout the rest of the film. Don't get me wrong, there's a few surprising moments, the acting is great, it's overall well shot, the soundtrack is fine and reminiscent of Only god forgives, and Drive. But the film just feels dry too much of the time. It feels lifeless, like it's trying so hard to be gritty that it sucks all possible life from itself. Maybe this was intentional, but even then it didn't work for me. It was just too dull. Hyena also has an ending that's open to interpretation. It's quite obvious what the outcome is, but I would've liked a more clear cut ending that felt satisfying. Overall Hyena is worth watching if you want a very dark crime thriller, just don't expect it to fully engage you, or wait for a satisfying end.
Was good until the end , I'm spoiling this for everyone who is considering reading the reviews before watching the film. Ok here goes, He snorts a bunch of cocaine ,then the movie ends in the middle of the action. WTF.
Feel as though your recent bout of cop flicks haven't been hitting the mark when it comes to the gritty, grimy and downright dark factors? Then Gerard Johnson's Hyena is just the film your looking for! As degenerate and devoid of lightness as your likely to want to get, Hyena is very much so a British crime film painted in the same brush as those dimly lit genre specialties like the U.K's very own The Long Good Friday and in some ways grungy classics like The French Connection and while Johnson's film sadly never eventuates into a film of special power Hyena is a never the less engaging watch, even though its often far too dark for its own good. Centring around drug squad cop Michael who operates under a special set of ethics alongside his team of crack snorting and extortion loving partners of the badge, Hyena starts off in the shadows and while briefly flirts in tiny moments with entering the smallest areas of light retreats as the runtime wears on into the underworlds of London and its criminal underbelly and with its unflinching depiction of violence and a particularly vulgar assault that is likely to offend many that lay witness to it, Hyena is a film not made for everybody and makes no apologies in being so. After only one previous film in the form of the equally small scale Tony, director Johnson should be commended for sticking to his guns and draws out great performances from his leading man Peter Ferdinando as the somehow likeable Michael and also the brilliant yet underused Stephan Graham as task force boss David Knight, with Graham once more showcasing just why his one of the industry's most reliable actors with his rare ability to go between charming and dangerous at the drop of a hat. Despite Johnson's and his main casts efforts however Hyena never fully gets going in a narrative sense and with a culmination that seems far too weak for what's come before, Hyena is likely to leave many a viewer cold in both an attachment and engagement sense. Commendable with its depiction of a seedy London cityscape and with a noteworthy score from Johnson's brother Matt and some nice central performances from Ferdinando and Graham, Hyena is good quality material that could've been something special had it struck the right narrative balance in amongst all its limb chopping's, swear words and dirty back alleys of a city that hides a dark yet violently alive world. 3 angry Albanians out of 5 www.jordanandeddie.wordpress.com
'Dark and gritty' gets thrown around so much that it's become a joke, inspiring the now sarcastic sci-fi specific #grimdark. Hyena however truly merits the term, with a police corruption story that has the same sleazy vibe as the more recent Maniac. Strong, stylish and at times shocking, this neon, drug soaked British crime flick is rewarding.
Kind of like Pusher but less, less than a push more like an angry glance, Glancer, that's what it should be called: Glancer.
Awesome. Everything about this film oozes coolness - most british gangster movies wish they were this good. Film of the year so far for me.
Dark, unforgiving...but one of these rare English movies I still hardly understand...waiting for subtitles
