Hypochondriac Reviews
Hypochondriac is one of the best horror movies because of the subjective manner in which it tackles such a common human condition. It is both scary and heartbreaking to see Heimann pour his heart out in such a visceral fashion.

While it’s not an easy watch, Hypochondriac is a superb film that takes no prisoners in its depiction of mental issues.

A film about which is our real enemy: our past or our mind? [Full review in Spanish]

Through expressionistic camerawork, clever characterization, an empathetic script, and an outstanding performance from star Zach Villa, Hypochondriac turns personal pain into enlightenment and hope.

Zach Villa's performance anchors the film as a queer POC coping with both mental illness and a physical injury. While the horror becomes slightly repetitive, this is a strong feature debut from director Heimann and a welcome new queer horror entry

Both gripping and bleakly moving.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 3, 2022
Addison Heimann’s Hypochondriac is a clever, painful, and surreal exploration of the ways serious mental illness can affect someone’s life.
| Original Score: 5/5 | Aug 3, 2022
Though it’s imperfect, the magnetic and warm performance of its lead captivates you just enough to stay with him on his journey.

This is like a twenty-something LGBTQ+ Donnie Darko, complete with psychedelic conversations with prescient creatures wearing animal suits.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Aug 3, 2022
A trippy drama with horror movie tendencies, 'Hypochondriac' powerfully evokes the fear of encroaching mental illness.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 2, 2022
A worthwhile, sometimes challenging watch and a promising feature debut. Heimann deserves credit for filtering such a traumatic personal experience into a creative work that lingers in the mind.

Hypochondriac is ambitious–it claws its way under your skin and invades your brain.

Addison uses the traumatic parts of his life to give it the look of farce.
| Original Score: C+ | Jul 30, 2022
A rather good psychodrama about repressed childhood trauma that’s also an underwhelming horror movie about mental illness.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jul 29, 2022
Hypochondriac becomes more than a simple horror tale or some gimmicky metaphor. There's genuine empathy between the lines.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Jul 29, 2022
The movie links cinematic thrill with real illness, tying movie monstrosity to specific psychiatric symptoms. Its armchair psychology makes for queasy viewing, a conflation of diagnosis and damnation.
| Jul 28, 2022
Hypochondriac is a strong film about mental illness as seen through the eyes of one person mainly, but also in how it can affect those around them. The way this is all brought together shows care for the material and for the subject at hand.
| Original Score: 4.5/5 | Jul 28, 2022
The struggle which follows is, in places, difficult to watch, especially for viewers who have been affected by such issues in their own lives, so Heimann sensibly leavens it with humour.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 27, 2022
Despite some endearing performances to support it, this film cannot rise above its mediocrity to deliver on the promise of a more enticing work.
| Original Score: 5/10 | Jul 27, 2022
An intense exploration of trauma and abuse that has a few twists and turns, but is predictable for the most part.
