Imaginary Reviews
Imagine a better movie. It’s not hard.

For a film about imagination, the new BlumHouse horror mystery lacks any real ingenuity. While presenting a creative concept, the barely nightmarish dull thriller deserved a much better execution.

Look beyond the plethora of allusions, and you’ll see a film that’s happily engaging with the genre while still maintaining a solid core of real dread so that it’s not all empty calories.

The result suffers from a fatal lack of imagination all the way to the climax, which echoes Coraline, Insidious, It and more to hoary and exhaustingly muddled effect.

There was a severe lack of imagination on display here.

The melodramatic and overstuffed script feels like an amalgamation of the latest Blumhouse offerings, which themselves were inferior versions of previous films. [Full Review in Spanish]

Unfortunately, Blumhouse’s Imaginary doesn’t really add anything new and instead cherry picks elements from other flicks that delivered similar superior scares.

Blumhouse seems to be on a mission to make the dumbest and most boring horror movies of the year, and this is no exception. Imaginary is ineffective at everything it attempts.

I didn't really do anything for me.

By the time the credits roll on Imaginary, you will have mixed feelings. There are a few good ideas here and there, but the characterization needed a bit more work, and the scares needed to be polished a tad more.

It's flimsy, cheap and easily forgotten — much like an unloved stuffy decaying in the darkness of some dusty box that will never be opened again.
| Original Score: 5/10 | Apr 3, 2024
This mostly terrible horror movie relies on chunks of ideas recycled from older movies, several predictable jump scares, and monster lore that wobbles all over the place and makes little sense.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Mar 29, 2024
Aesthetically it's good, with decent sound design and an atmosphere that mirrors some old-school horror movies, but the style over substance approach is disappointing when the movie could've gone a lot harder than it did.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Mar 27, 2024
The concept could've led to some interesting blends of fantasy and horror. Unfortunately, what it actually led to is another lifeless "quick buck" effort from Blumhouse. It's cheap, it's unoriginal, it's boring, and yet...it probably still made a profit.
| Original Score: 1.5/5 | Mar 26, 2024
While the final act plays with Chauncey’s form a little (including some genuinely good practical effects), this supernatural horror story is disappointingly crayon-by-numbers – snatching wholesale from Poltergeist, Insidious and Coraline.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Mar 25, 2024
This horror film isn't very scary; it manages to build some tension during its first act, but it falls incredibly flat during the second and especially the third, and it unfortunately wastes a premise with potential. Full review in Spanish.

...a deliberate and often astonishingly sluggish misfire...

“Imaginary” is mid. There is a good story in there, but writers Greg Erb, Jason Oremland and director Jeff Wadlow missed it. There is a central, strong theme: the inability to rely on or trust your loved ones or yourself.

Imaginary finally gains momentum in the third act once the plot gets nutty, but by then it is too little too late. Wadlow has certainly made worse horror films than Imaginary, but his latest effort is still mostly toothless and unimaginative.

Imaginary was cookie-cutter with a dash of making me contemplate something fresh for the horror genre.
