In July Reviews
There is something magical about this movie. Evan after so many years, it is my all-time favourite.
A few silly moments but overall an enjoyable movie.
Full of romantic clichés and cheesiness galore. It's impossible not to cringe in most of the scenes.
I enjoyed the twist at the end where the Turkish guy wasn't really a bad guy but was just trying to get his uncle's remains back to Turkey.
This is definitely one of the best romantic comedies I've ever seen. Not to mention that some scenes were also shot in Romania.
Raw, VERY low budget German road movie, and Akin's best IMO. It's no where near as deep as his later features go, but it's the most enjoyable one for me, this one is more amaturish, less developed and has that fresh filmmaker spirit, and there are still some roots to his German/Turkish identity crisis in this film, but they are handled more lightly.

The idea is formulaic as the guy is oblivious to the girl's feelings of love, but the actors do such an amazing job that I was sucked in pretty quickly. The leads show great depth and range in their performances. Funny, sexy, and beautiful cinematography. I wish I was there.
"In July" starts out with Daniel(Moritz Bleibtreu) having a good deal of trouble getting a ride out of a man in the middle of nowhere.(The driver has a body in his trunk by the way.) Once he has secured the ride, Daniel relates how he got to this point: Daniel is a straight and narrow teacher in Hamburg(so much so that he teaches a regular lesson right before summer vacation begins). A free spirit, July(Christiane Paul), has a crush on him and sells him a ring with the sun on it and convinces him that his true love is tied to the sun. She informs him of a block party that is happening that night. Daniel does not run into July at the party, but instead Melek(Idel Uner), an attractive young woman originally from Turkey. Daniel and Melek spend a chaste night together before Melek has to return to Turkey. Before she does, she mentions where she will be in Istanbul several days hence. July, given up all hope, seeks a fresh start anywhere else. By chance, she is picked up by Daniel on his way to Istanbul to hopefully meet up with Melek. Got that? "In July" is a movie about how people affect each other and can change their direction in life. The movie is familiar and based on a good deal of coincedence but is very charmingly done with likeable leads.
I'd expected more from Im Juli. I hoped it would be another great German story, maybe love story, but Im Juli bored me sort of. I didn't feel the love, and movies in which people travel around the world somehow often don't impress me, because switching locations takes away room for story, I feel. Apart from that, I don't like Moritz Bleibtreu (Run Lola Run) much as an actor. He's just not a type I want to see in a movie, and he looks stressed out in a way to me. That stresses me, too.
In July is a good romance/drama. In July takes a familiar story and familiar motifs and makes a fresh movie. Our protagonist is looking for love and is presented with 3 different women, representing the sun, the moon, and the wind (I believe the woman he first meets and buys the ring from is the wind because of the smoke and floating scene - then again maybe she's representing all the elements of the earth, including wind. Spoiler.... even though her sun tatoo is revealed at the end I don't think she's meant to be the sun - I see it more as a representation of the earthly element of fire and of course the sign that she is what he was really looking for.), so make it the sun, the moon, and the earth. I think the moon gets a bad rap. Yes, the moon girl is loony, but really there wouldn't be life on earth as we know it without the forces of the moon influencing our delicate balance of existence. Good early in the relationship date movie. Wouldn't mind seeing it again sometime but don't care to own it.

Fatih Akin is the most promising director I have had the chance of experiencing since Fernando Meirelles. He knows exactly what he wants out of this film, a sweet, charming love story that you can't turn away from. The characters are brilliant, the performancea are amazing, the dialogue is fresh and witty, the cinematography is superb...what more can you want out of a love story? I recommend this forgotten gem to everyone! Full Review Later
Another absolute gem from the most talented young director around; this road trip romance/comedy flows all the way from northern Germany through eastern Europe to Turkey like the sweetest honey, Akin's usual choice of amazing music, beautiful photography (photography is really amazing) and playful yet subtle visual effects -- a must see! (: i really enjoyed the movie.. Thank you Devrim
