I used to like Meg Ryan, but I was shocked by her role in this. She plays the dumbest skank I've ever seen.. and having known a few dumb as rocks skanks in my life, not one was as dumb or as skanky as Meg in this stupid movie, to the point that I found her level of stupid skankiness completely unbelievable. Hard pass.

what a waste of time. low grade soft porn at best. no real storyline. I will never get those minutes back

Really good idea for the movie but it just doesn't work. The look of the.movie is great with a 80s Trinity look and feel. However it just doesn't come together.

I just watched In the Cut. It’s not for everyone. I found Air very disturbing but I kept watching because of Meg Ryan’s performance; her performance is so well done and interesting. Not many actresses could have pulled it off. The plot is interesting on a number of levels.

It was pretty good but I didn't care for ending at all. I'd never want to watch it again. Watch it if there's nothing else on.

This movie is highly underrated. The acting was outstanding .

Whatever this movie was trying to be, it did not work.

Wastes its best actors and is really obvious.

Disappointing. Campion with a rare miss in this half-baked erotic thriller.

It was an absorbing enough affair for most of the runtime I guess. This art-house take on the erotic thriller isn't as sensational or tantalizing as the filmmakers thought it would be.

Rambling and disjointed film loaded with unlikeable characters. The talents of Ruffalo, Ryan, Bacon and Jason Leigh are completely wasted in stilted dialog, weak cinematography, and choppy direction and editing.

Mildly watchable. Yes it does move rather slowly and it does sort of seem like Meg Ryan's midlife crisis, "I'm over 40 and want to feel like I'm still sexy" project, but I was able to watch it to the end (with a few breaks.) Sexy-time with a murder mystery tossed in is, I guess, how I would describe it. It had just enough plot to keep it somewhat interesting and a couple small twists. Some of the atmospheric camera work was fun to watch. Decent acting without much to work with. There is one scene with an obvious production mistake where Meg and Mark are talking on the street and the same woman walks by twice going the same direction. Probably overlooked by most. I guess I was bored enough to notice those kinds of little details. I probably wouldn't recommend it unless there's not much else to watch, but I do think some of the other reviews are overly harsh. I was somewhat interested to see how it was going to play out.

It's horrible. Tacky. Boring, boring, boring. I expected more from the actors in it. They are good actors. And I'm not saying they weren't good in this but the movie is just terrible. Meg Ryan's character was ridiculously boring, Mark Ruffalo's character was over the top inappropriate. Save yourself some time and watch something else.

Horrible! OMG - was bored, perusing Netflix - I thought, "Wow, here's a movie I never saw." It's like soft porn meets very bad acting (don't they all? hahah) - but this was a step way down for Ms Ryan and Jason-Leigh......they must have lost a bet to make this movie.

Widely panned when it came out it's actually not that bad. It's more about atmosphere than plot. The sultry cinematography is full of reds, yellows, and soft focus shots. Gritty, realistic NYC locations are effectively used. Mark Ruffalo is very good as a NYC detective. Yes it's artsy (this is a Jane Campion film), but quite watchable.

A murder mystery story that has been told better a hundred time over, but their is some interesting dialogue in a movie that barely even tries.

How disappointing that a renown female director made yet another film about yet another dull, vapid woman whose only interesting quality seems to be her burgeoning sexuality. Oh yes, and there is a prostitute with a heart of gold trope in here, too. Really silly stuff.

I feel like I was hired along with other people who got suckered into watching this terrible movie to allow Meg Ryan to have her "coming out party" as a sex queen. And maybe not her fault but I just can't see her in this role "Raunchy" and "Meg" don't go together

Jane Campion's erotically charged thriller is not of the same ilk as more general, straight up examples of the genre like Basic Instinct (1992) or Fatal Attraction (1987). Her artistic take on the sub genre can be interpreted in many different ways, making for a very entrancing experience. Meg Ryan throws everything at the wall playing Frannie, a high school teacher who dreams of being a novelist. Her world is turned upside down when she meet Detective Malloy (an early performance from Mark Ruffalo) who is investigating what he believes might be a serial killer, after a woman is found dead outside Frannie's apartment building. Campion holds no punches, In The Cut is both violent and sexually explicit, but these combine to make you fully believe in Frannie's turmoil. Based on the novel of the same name by Susanna Moore, this adaptation flirts with many potential reasons for what is going on, including a reading that I saw as the entire script being an erotic novel written by Frannie. I doubt this was Campion's intention, but it proves her strength in style, and makes for a hypnotic, almost supernatural in places, alternative thriller.
