Initiation Reviews
Ya'll have all heard of 911 right?
Not your typical slasher, even offering some depth one may say and with a good eye for the use of modern technology.
Initiation has some of the ingredients of a great slasher but sadly does not realize its full potential.
Overall, I quite enjoyed this film. Instead of being just another slasher, the film successfully introduces new elements such as technology. It introduces multiple mysteries that I found to be rather unpredictable, and the reveals felt satisfying. It certainly takes a little while to get going, but I was invested once several mysteries were outlined. The ending is also pleasing, but I can't deny that it felt somewhat abrupt and rushed. Either way, I still would class this film as a hidden gem and it comes recommended to lovers of slashers such as Scream.
I only liked the last 30mins of the movie. everything before that was very slow paced. But it had a surprising plot twist that got me Lol
There's some cool gimmicks and great filmmaking going on here, but the social commentary that they're trying to hit you over the head with, has been done to death. The lead actress is also not very likable or believable. Still, there is some great gore, and this may be a fresh message for some viewers, so it's worth seeing
Boring movie. Boring plot. Boring twist. If there is nothing else to watch this may be an option to pass time.
The story is great and for a teen slasher movie, the plot is presented in a really smart way. What makes it a 3 stars, for me, it's because the melting of the "social issue" plot and the scary moments are not done in a fluid way. It's like we are watching a drama scene after that a slasher scene, to come back again into a drama on the next scene, and another time a slasher movie, etc.
So as a slasher film, it was good. The subtext behind it about the cyber bullying and reliance on technology didn't really land!
I was nervous when the movie began, but I love being proven wrong. Initiation begins as something we think we've seen... but once we know the main characters and the story picks up, I realized it's something I HAVE seen, but not in a movie. A different kind of slasher we've been waiting for!
Ok, it's not the most original story, but it's decent entertainment for a Friday night flick.
Sadly the movie doesn't really know what it wants to be. Partly slasher with a poor execution and also partly a social commentary on fraternity and sex abuse with poor acting and little tension. Too long, boring with a neutral cinematography and an uninventive direction it struggles to keep you interested although you can sense it tries harder than your typical horror movie.
Honestly just not very good or remotely original 2.2
Decent slasher flick
Edge of my seat ending! Wow! Lindsay LaVanchy is a standout actress! I look forward to seeing more from her. Maybe a sequel? Not your typical slasher movie; real world issues woven in. Characters you care about and characters you quickly learned to hate.
This is the 90s slasher reboot new intelligent horror audiences have been waiting for. The story weaves multiple social issues that speakers to the younger generation of streamers and social media users.
I wasn't expecting much after the trailer but I was surprised how deep the story got before the kills began. So many issues packed into the story, but it wasn't preachy or distracting. 5/5
