Innerspace Reviews

Apr 16, 2025

Though perhaps a little too muddled for its own good, Innerspace is still great fun as a sci-fi comedy adventure, with superb special effects. Not to mention, Martin Short is a hoot.

Molto ma molto bello, non me l'aspettavo

Standard made-for-profit Hollywood movie. Not genuine. Not my kind of thing. The 80s has such a fun and happy vibe associated with it but this will removed from my 80s movie list.

This film takes me back to my childhood and it’s still an entertaining film now. There’s very few films like Innerspace and a lot of the effects still hold its own today. Martin Short is typically funny in his own sweet way and Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan both peaked at this time.

Fun and we enjoyed watching this silly tale but objectively it is utterly daft and hasn't aged too great. Watched it on DVD.

This should have been the biggest hit of Summer 1987. Enormously entertaining.

Excellent film, which definitely paved the way for other films of this nature in the future!

If you google searched "Generic Carbon Stamped 80s Movie" this is the exact film you would get. This film is made up of pretty much nothing original, its characters and humor have all been done in about 30 different movies in the same era. The positive reviews here are quite misleading, and the bulk of them you will find present are here not for the writing, but for the nostalgia of the 80s. The movie is 2 hours long and you will feel every minute of it, its villain characters are moronically stupid and it suffers from some serious tonal whiplash and really drawn out plot. There's only about 3 minutes of this movie that I'd actually like to watch for some of the effects and sound design. But the film as a whole? Forget it. Everything in this movie has been done before somewhere better, and if you're looking to satisfy that 80s craving, I'd recommend watching one of the films this movie ripped off of instead. This is one that you can definitely skip and find something better. There is nothing here that this movie has to offer over any other scifi film in the 80s, or any scifi film period for that matter, it doesn't at all surprise me that this was a flop at the box office.

This overlong and seriously over-plotted but generally fun nonsense begins well, but the plot's just too complicated by the mid-way point for it to be effectively workable thereafter. However, Short is exceptional throughout here, in a role tailor made for his wacky schtick—Perhaps his best work in a film.

Joe Dante‘s (Hawaii Five-0, The Phantom) most well known non horror movie is a fun movie with fantastic Oscar winning effects that still hold up and a likeable cast

Unoriginal and poorly and lazily scripted.

That opening shot of the microscopic image of ice was super trippy. An absolutely ridiculous and outlandish premise. I have to praise the practical effects. The way they made parts of the inside of the body look was believable. Martin Short's performance was hilarious. This movie was a hoot! A holler, a goof and a gaff. Silly but funny. That reveal when he finds out he's inside Lydia was awesome. That fetus scene was actually incredible. The dwarf scenes were so funny. This ended up being a pretty interesting and unique sci-fi comedy movie. What really surprised me was how well done all the practical effects were. All the scenes involving the inside of the body were impressive. I liked the character development of Jack. He started out as a worried hypochondriac and ended up as a strong respectable man with the help of the little guy inside him. Dennis Quaid was enthusiastic and charming to watch. I thought it was a fun and entertaining movie. I'd watch it again for sure and I'd like to own it.

Martin Short and Dennis Quaid star in this witty inner-body adventure that still remains enthralling after 33 years of filmography advancements. This Oscar winning sci-fi of the 1980's will always remain a favorite of mine.

A silly bit of '80s science fiction, in which a disgraced fighter pilot (Dennis Quaid) is shrunken to microscopic size (by way of... spinning really fast?) and then accidentally injected into Martin Short's ass. Whilst dodging fat cells and fighting the tides of a blood stream, Quaid dutifully explores the inner recesses of Short's body and, eventually, establishes contact with his unwitting host to guide himself towards salvation. Toss in a flaky supporting appearance by Meg Ryan, which almost instantly spawns a love triangle, and you've got the jist. It's even dumber than it sounds. Many of Innerspace's best moments are when it embraces that truth and leans into the idiocy - the story's mustache-twirling villains are all playfully over-the-top - but it's wishy-washy about that and doesn't always seem like it's completely in on its own jokes. The plot is super redundant, too, with its heroes escaping capture no less than five different times and way too many evil masterminds / sinister henchmen crammed into the scenery. It does boast some decent special effects, and Short's energetic brand of physical humor is good for a few simplistic laughs, but otherwise it's just your basic cable-friendly time filler.

With special effects that are out of this world, InnerSpace is a solid adventure flick with some great action and a frantic as expected Martin Short

really odd but a lot of fun.

Dennis Quaid, Martin Short and Meg Ryan make a great team!

Not into stupid humor but I liked this one. A shrinking experiment that relies on two chips gets a shrunken man injected into a common grocery clerk while the other chip is stolen by people who want to control that power.

They really don’t make movies like this anymore. An absolute but flawed blast featuring a great performance from Martin Short.
