Into the Woods Reviews

Apr 13, 2025

I think people don’t understand that the reason it is so long is because it is also a Broadway musical. The actual story setup was okay, but the cast was just perfect. I love the twist on each fairytale and how they joined together. I will say the first half was better than the second. I think it is better that they didn’t hire people all of the same age and kept a variety. The music is so hard to sing I don’t know how the cast was able to do it. Overall, very good movie for those that like something dark but not too dark!

Love CINDERELLA AND RAPUNZELS VOICES

Love the musical score. The stories are diabolically refreshing, having hear their originals ad nauseum. Meryl Streep and the rest of the cast perfect. Very good movie.

This is a great movie version of one of the best musicals by Sondheim, the god of American musical theater. If you don't like this brilliant musical rewriting of fairy tales with clever lyrics and an incredible range of feeling from goofy to profoundly poignant, then maybe you just don't like this genre? You can argue if it's as good as the Broadway cast recording (it's not) but this is a very faithful effort with strong singing by most of the leads. Streep is quite good.

Don't really understand why people don't like this movie. It's creative and well told visually and musically it's great.

Into the Woods is great-looking stuff, loved the beautiful but creepy and colourful but foreboding woods setting as well as the cinematography.

A relatively mid musical that might entertain tweens while they’re watching it but you won’t remember much about it just weeks later. It has a great, if slightly overstuffed cast who kind of just wander around the woods for the whole movie. There is a plot for the first half but I think they didn’t have any story for the second half so they just “Jurassic Park III’d it”. Overall, it’s an uneven, messy, okay Disney movie that you can easily live without ever watching. If you want to watch a 2010s live action Disney movie, I highly recommend Tomorrowland, which is a lot better.

The first act is wonderful, but am I the only one wondering why the bakers wife wants a child so bad and then makes out with the prince after they’ve had a babe? I mean it pulls me out of it so much I have hardly any sympathy for the baker or their predicaments. Kinda ridiculous I’m not sure if that’s in the play but other than the main storyline falling flat the second act misses the mark.

Countless people have said how dreadful this movie production is and makes me wonder why Sondheim gave permission for it to be made with such dreadful cuts, particularly in the second act, which are the reasons, presumably why, this magnificent music, lyrics and book were written.

Best film ever! Every thing in it is good. It's quite miraculous how it is possible to make a film as good as Into the Woods is. It's about a baker and his wife, who one day are visited by a witch (Meril Streep), who tells them about how she was cursed by her mother to be ugly many years ago. The witch requests the baker and his wife to go on a journey in the woods to find her the ingredients for a potion that will make her beautiful once more!

As someone who grew up basically obsessed with the stage musical, I feel like this production was underappreciated. The casting was good to great, though Meryl Streep in particular had huge shoes to fill playing Bernadette Peters's role (I know, weird thing to say about Streep in particular); the cuts they made were mostly things that really wouldn't have translated well from the stage to the screen, like, the 'One Midnight Gone' summaries of what we'd seen so far, though cutting the Baker's father's song I disagree with; Agony might actually have been funnier than the original Broadway cast version. As in many musicals of the era, it feels visually grey and gritty, which I don't agree with particularly for the brighter first half of the movie, but other than that, they did a pretty good job adapting a really challenging show.

This Disney attemt at dark commedy is too overstuffed to hit home. The Gothic styling is nice and moments are good, but in the end, Into the Woods feels like more of a mess than anything.

This was the worst movie I've ever seen, not an exaggeration. The only time I remember leaving a theater in a genuinely bad mood because of how terrible the film was.

Yes, its a little too rushed in the second half and very Disneyfied overall. But the good elements (like Emily Blunt, Anna Kendrick, the hilarious rendition of "Agony") do somewhat outweigh the bad.
